Chico says' "I never saw this season coming"!
Side Show Joe replied to man-up UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
It didn't come from me. I was just responding to the OP. -
You are right. Mac has managed to escape the majority of the blame for our current situation. I think there are a few reasons for that. First, our QB situation has been a sore spot among the fanbase, and now our QB coach, is running the show. And second, many in the fan base and on this board believe Mac was only part of the equation, and that the leadership in the athletic department is the root of our problem.

Chico says' "I never saw this season coming"!
Side Show Joe replied to man-up UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
I had serious issues with this season before it even started (schedule with a week 1 bye, the 5 home games). Most of the fans that were paying attention, knew the staff didn't do enough to address our QB concerns. But, to be honest, Cosh being a bust as the D coordinator, and the terrible play of our defense was a surprise. I didn't expect us to be the best defense in C-USA, but didn't expect us to be this bad either. After the Tennessee game, some of us on the board pointed out that Tennessee took it easy on us, but others didn't care to hear the truth. I didn't even bother to predict the MTSU score because I had a bad feeling it wouldn't be pretty. This football program is in worse shape now, then it was in the Dodge years. At least we could point to the Sun Belt conference or Fouts as an excuse back then. About two weeks before the season, I spoke with Canales and he told me this team would be good and win games. So, I believe him when he says, "I never saw this season coming". The problem is, he, the rest of the staff, and leadership should have. -
MGB: Per John Werner, Briles not interested
Side Show Joe replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Baylor offensive coordinator Kendal Briles has told John Werner of the Waco Tribune-Herald that "publicly", he is not interested in UNT job. Fixed! -
Love the Speed Racer reference! One of my favorite episodes too.

It's hard to engage in any UNT sports topic without RV somehow working into the conversation. He is the AD of the programs we discuss. Asking the fan base to exclude him from topics on this board, would be like asking the media to exclude the president from foreign policy topics.

Side Show Joe replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
LOL! I disagree. If Ohio State, Notre Dame, Bama, and Clemson also "win out", which one do you expect the committee to drop for OU? OU does not have a great OOC win on its' resume (Tennessee is currently 6-4). Of the one loss teams, OU's 7 point loss to a 4-6 Texas team is ugliest (Notre Dame lost to a 10-0 Clemson by 2 points, Bama lost to a 7-3 Ol' Miss by 6 points). The Big12 won't be in the playoff this season. -
DRC Monday column: New coach must unite fractured fan base
Side Show Joe replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
The title of the article is misleading. The fracture within our fan base was not caused by one coaching hire, and it won't be fixed by one coaching hire. It is a result of several bad coaching hires. That's why the banner read Fire Rick Villarreal. If the university leadership would do its job and hire a new AD, the next head coach won't have to spend his valuable time trying to unit the Mean Green Nation. He could focus on building us a top level FBS football program. Where is the article that takes a cold hard look at how our athletic department has fared (attendance, budget, wins/loses, facilites, season ticket numbers, supporter club development,...) over the 15 years under RV, versus the other FBS programs in Texas, and C-USA? Lets see if we (and the students) are really getting our moneys worth? -
The Dodge years were bad, really bad,... but not this bad. We were a Sun Belt level program and as a fan base didn't have very high expectations. That just isn't the case now. The sad truth is more then a few current Sun Belt programs would clean our clock right now, and those programs spend much less money on athletics. Even with the gains we have seen off the field during RV's time as AD (Apogee & C-USA), the decade of losing has taken its toll on many of us. With the facilities and conference we play in, we just shouldn't be this bad in all three major sports. None of the other recent additions are as bad in all three major sports. Many of us believe RV has made enough contributions to our athletics. Lets bring in new leadership and set a higher standard for success (winning, scheduling, & marketing). If the new leadership fixes those three issues, MGC and attendance numbers will naturally increase.

Baylor didn't lose that game because of little Birles or their offense. The Baylor offense managed to score 34 points on the best defense in the Big12, despite having a true freshman running the show in his second start. Briles did his job. The defense didn't.
-
Overall, our entire athletics have been bad for a decade. That is completely unacceptable. Mac was a bad hire because he... A. Didn't recruit well. B. Was stubborn as a mule and wouldn't field a modern offense. and C. Mishandled our QB position for the last 2 season. I think North Texas could be a great place to coach football. The sad truth is, at this point, UNT should already be viewed as a great place to coach. The fact that few in the national narrative view our job as desirable, is an indictment of our current leadership and those that choose to stay this course. Lets finish cleaning house, and hold our university to a higher standard. In 2014, Houston brought in Hunter Yurachek from Coastal Carolina. He is their Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics (their AD). He chaired the committee that sold the naming rights to their new stadium, and worked on the development of their new basketball facility. Yuracheck was also instrumental in the search for coach Tom Herman, who currently has UH undefeated, and their new men's and women's basketball coaches. Lets be like Houston and bring in new leadership.

It's quiet in here tonight and I think I know why
Side Show Joe replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
None of the teams in the top 4 will get dropped for a one loss OU. Personally, I think Baylor is going to wipe the floor with Oklahoma State, and mess things up for Bedlam. I think TCU will lose to both OU and Baylor. I doubt any of the top four lose down the stretch, but even if one does, Iowa seems to be getting much more respect from the committee then any Big12 team. I still can't understand how a close win over Indiana was "quality" enough to justify moving Iowa from #9 to #5. Seems like the fix is already in. I think the Big12 gets left out again. -

I'm not politicking for OU. I'm not an OU fan. But, I think we can all agree that the playoff committee doesn't view all programs equally. The whole system seems corrupt to me. I think at the end of the season most Big12 programs and fans will agree. Bingo. -

I think OU insured the Big12 will be left out of the playoffs again. Even though OU will probably run the table against TCU and OSU, the committee won't place them in the top 4 with that loss to Texas on their resume. -
Tennessee ran a vanilla offense and a vanilla defense today, and was still able to get an early lead very easily. They took their foot off the gas and didn't embarrass us. Wilson had a nice day. I like Canales, but he isn't the answer to our problems. I have no doubts about his ability to be a head coach. But, we need a coach that can out recruit the top G5 programs around the nation and some of the P5 too. Canales has not done that at UNT, and he has been here longer then any other coach left on this staff.

If we can't land a highly regarded offensive coordinator from Baylor or TCU, then there are specific qualities I want to see in the finalist for our job. 1. Strong Texas recruiting ties 2. High powered offensive system 3. Successful head coaching experience at a G5 level program, in a region with multiple P5 programs, and with limited resources. I like Canales, but he just doesn't this criteria.

Without naming names or throwing current employees under the bus, could you provide some insight into how RV is/was perceived within the football program? Players opinions? Staffs opinions?

Players are calling MGC members...
Side Show Joe replied to Ben Gooding's topic in Mean Green Football
Has Canales called anyone yet. I could see him manning the phone for a while and reaching out to supporters. I doubt he'd even need someone to ask him to. Just seems like the kind of guy that would. -
In theory this sounds great. The problem is Mack Brown was making about $5.5 million when he left Texas. There is no way we can get anywhere close to paying him that much money. If we had that kind of cash laying around we could poach a quality P5 coach. Just can't see Brown giving up his cushy seat at ESPN for what we are able to pay, but I like the way you think. Deloss Dodds is probably a better and more affordable option. He's old as dirt, but if he came in and accomplished half of what he did at Texas, it would still be much more then any other possible AD could achive. In his prime he was earning about $630,000 a year. That's a little over twice what RV gets. In my opinion it would be money well spent.

Kendal Briles -- North Texas Head Coaching Candidate
Side Show Joe replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I think we will really get to see how good Briles is on Thursday night against K State and the following week against Oklahoma. Baylor lost their starting QB and will be starting a true freshman. I think how that high powered offense plays in these two games will say a lot about his coaching ability. The comparisons to Dodge are ridiculous. Dodge was a high school coach. Briles has been a part of developing Baylor into a national power over the last decade.- 187 replies

Marcus Trice supporting Chico for HC job
Side Show Joe replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Personally, I really like Canales. When he took over for Dodge he proved to be a better and more competent coach. Now, he has taken over for Mac, and again he has proven to be the better coach for the job. The main reason Canales won't get serious consideration for the job is because over his time at UNT he hasn't lured big time Texas recruits to our campus. If he were to continue winning and North Texas finishes the season on a winning streak, and he lands a couple of P5 caliber players before the end of the season, he would have to get consideration for the job. That's a lot of things that would have to fall his way, and it's not going to happen. But his biggest problem is no top notch high school recruit, or any FBS level recruit for that matter, is going to commit to play for an interim head coach. Sorry Chico, but we have to land a coach that can out recruit the other C-USA programs and the majority of the Texas programs. -
What Are You Wearing Tomorrow?

Black it is. Does the student section know about this? Someone should spread the word.
