This is absolutely true. RV did write a personal check out of his own pocket to cover the cost, and this Greene bust would not have been made were it not for the influence of KRAM. He should be applauded.

Post Your Mean Green Photo....
Side Show Joe replied to MeanGreen_MBA's topic in Mean Green Football
Happy times, before our fan base was so divided. Back in 2012, some of us fans (I won't name names) went and hung posters all around Denton. I had a great time that day. I hope we can get back to doing things like this again. Maybe the next AD will want to revive this project. -
Thanks Tyler. Keep me updated. I look forward to seeing what the new AD thinks of this project. I know I'm fired up about it.
-
Thanks MGT. I would certainly do my best for our university. Can't wait for Sept. 3rd. We will see y'all at the game. I think it was to make them more visible to the T.V. cameras. I don't think a location was ever locked down, but the south end zone was discussed.

This is the clay model of the Haynes bust. Like I said in the Greene thread, it is about 80% finished. I still have to sculpt the jersey and pads, and clean up the rough areas in the face and hair. I really hope the next AD wants to finish this project. I know Abner isn't in the best of health. I think he would enjoy returning to Denton to be honored. For comparison, here is Abner's Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame bust. Happy 4th of July everyone.

Thanks Harry. I finally found those pictures of the Haynes sculpture. I'll get them posted on here when I get a break today, Have a happy 4th.

Thanks for the endorsement, greenjoe. Brian Hanlon sculpted the Shaq statue for LSU. He was a great choice for the project. Hanlon is the official sculptor at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. His studio is located in New Jersey. There are very few portrait sculptors out there. It isn't the focus of most sculpting programs, so most universities don't have an alum that can do it. I could and would do the job for less then Mr. Hanlon.

I personally delivered the sculpture to RV the day of the "Great Halloween Victory" over Rice, back in 2013. With Fox Sports 1 there, security was tight around the athletic center that day. I don't know what RV has done with it, but I imagine it is somewhere in the athletic center. I haven't seen it since I delivered it.

Thank you guys for the kind words. I really enjoy sculpting portraits. Especially those of North Texas alumni. I'll try and post a photo of the Abner Haynes bust. It's about an 80% finished clay model right now. I think the Haynes bust looks better then the one I did for Greene. I recently moved, and just bought a house 2 days ago. Once I get my new studio up and running, I'm going to finish it. Maybe the next AD will want to continue this project.

Since we are all laying our cards on the table, I'll go ahead and share this. I made this life sized Joe Greene bust for the athletic department back in 2013. It was based on the above photo that Harry posted. KRAM was a big help with communicating with the athletic department and getting this thing cast. I studied under Scott Myers, one of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's sculptors. I've taken a few commissions over the last few years. I was commissioned by TCU to create a bronze sculpture for their College of Education in Palko Hall, and I also created a sculpture of Fort Worth billionaire Richard Rainwater. The plan was to have this Greene sculpture installed in the south end zone, and eventually add one of Abner Haynes and Ray Renfro. The Haynes bust has been about 80% finished since 2014. I know RV had a lot of other things on his plate, but I wish this project had not been pushed back. As a die North Texas alum, I would love to finish this project, and would certainly enjoy creating a life sized statue. I hope the next AD chooses to push Tyler's Greene project forward, regardless of who gets the commission to sculpt it.

Apogee should be up there with Houston's ECU-TD! stadium. Ford is not as nice as Apogee. I have to wonder how many of these reporters have actually been to Apogee.

I'm a little concerned about our return game. Tre Johnson was a good return man and one of the few bright spots on last seasons team. I thought he played well and should have earned a scholarship. I have to wonder if there were other factors involved. http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2016/02/tre-johnson-has-left-unt.html/

I like the idea, but at $250 I think there would be too many fans in the place to have any kind of meaningful conversation. If you raise the price to $1,000, then you have fewer fans, but are leaving money on the table, and probably some good ideas too. I would pay $250 for one lunch, if they caped each lunch at 10 fans. I think 10 fans sitting around 1 table with Littrell would be much more interesting and informative. If 250 fans paid up, then they would need to host 25 of these events. There are 52 weeks in a year. All of the lunches don't have to happen during the season. 250 fans at the table with Littrell, once a year x $250 = $62,500 earned or 50 fans somewhere in the room, 5 times a year x $1,000 = $50,000 earned

My sister-in-law works for the Rice Alumni Association. At Rice, the athletic department doesn't have access to the alumni association's email list, but can request the association's help in getting emails sent to alums. So, it can and is done by other universities in C-USA.

DRC: Dickenson the right person for UNT’s athletic director
Side Show Joe replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm grateful to Hank for his many years of service to UNT, but I don't want him or any other member of RV's leadership team to become our next AD. I never heard Hank speak out against what was going on. At best he turned a blind eye to problems that have plagued our athletics. In my opinion, that doesn't merit getting the AD job. If Minnisota doesn't snag NIU's AD, he'd be a good option.- 75 replies

The 50 most important college players in Texas in 2016 — No. 18: UNT’s Alec Morris No. 18 – UNT quarterback Alec Morris The History On paper, Alec Morris might be the most talented quarterback to roll through Denton in over a decade and he has yet to throw an official pass for the Mean Green. Morris is a grad transfer, meaning he can participate in the upcoming season without penalty because he finished his degree and is continuing his education at North Texas. He’s also there to help first-year head coach Seth Littrell win football games. It is the same reason Morris was signed by Alabama and head coach Nick Saban after high school. Morris was a top-flight recruit out of Allen High School. As a prep quarterback at the largest school in the state, Morris averaged 270.7 passing yards and 35 touchdowns as a senior. He passed for 2,534 yards and 22 touchdown passes as a junior in 2011. His college career never got off the ground in Alabama. He was the program’s third-string quarterback in 2014 and 2015, seeing action in seven games over that span without earning a start. During his four seasons at Alabama, Morris did collect two national championship rings. http://www.texasfootball.com/the-50-most-important-college-players-in-texas-in-2016-no-18-unts-alec-morris/

MGB: Follow-up thoughts on UNT scheduling FCS opponents
Side Show Joe replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I have to disagree with this article. RV's crappy scheduling philosophy of playing a body-bag game on the road has been in place for 15 years, and his addition of trying to buy FCS wins at home, has been in place for a few years now, and neither is working. The overall results just don't support this strategy. 1 winning season in the last decade proves it. We field an FBS team. Our primary focus needs to be on building a program that consistently beats other FBS level teams. If our coaches can't do that, then our primary focus needs to be on holding people accountable and hiring the right people that will win at our level, not lowering our expectations in the scheduling just to fluff up our record. Even had we beaten Portland State last season, in our "buy-an FCS-win" attempt, our record would still have been 2-10. It should be very simple. Schedule home and home series with other FBS level programs. This isn't rocket science. -
MGB: UNT future football schedules update
Side Show Joe replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
When will the athletic department learn that you can't develop fan interest scheduling games like these. I have zero interest in watching us play these types of games. Apogee was built to lure quality FBS programs. Bring back the Houston and Indiana type games. This is garbage. I hope the new AD will undo this miss. Buying these games out can't be too expensive. -
LA Tech would throw a fit if ULL were included in this conference. Just like UTEP would if NMSU was added. Also, I don't like the ULL fans, They get all bent out of shape over there name. South Alabama has a good program. Adding them would please the other eastern teams like Southern Miss and UAB.
-
If we were to reform I'd prefer this combination. Big Gulf Conference North Texas Rice UTEP UTSA LA Tech Southern Miss UAB South Alabama I think it would be fine with 8 teams, but if most wanted 10 for a title game, then I'd structure it like this. Big Gulf Conference Texas Division North Texas Rice UTEP UTSA Texas State Old South Division LA Tech Southern Miss UAB South Alabama Arkansas State I think either set up would be a nice competitive conference for football and basketball. Great regional divisions, but not too regional as a conference.

June 20th, 2016 - How will you celebrate?
Side Show Joe replied to NTAlum09's topic in Mean Green Football
Hopefully, I'll celebrate when we announce the new AD... We need to knock it out of the park and hire a great AD to take over.
