  1. One man is not responsible for the state of this project. RV has worked his butt off. He cannot help that MOST of the alumni/former students do not give a damn about this university, and their lack of pride shows in the lack of donations to the athletic program. Sorry, but it is sad that we hang our hopes on an athletic fee. In the spring, RV said himself Bama and Penn State don't, their former students step up. It is long past time for our graduates to do so. They would rather complain about what we lack rather than being a part of the solution to get what we should have. Support is not just "donating'", heck at the very least show up and buy a ticket and a coke. Granted RV is not perfect, but the dollars won't flow just because you have another AD. Start winning, they said, and the big donors would step up. 4 conference championships (Yes, Sun Belt but still DIV 1) Where were the big donors? Change coaches, which we did, still waiting for the big donors to fulfill their promise of money because that was done. Get a president who is pro athletics. We have one now, and nobody can argue that Pohl was not supportive of the athletic program. You may have good reason for your opinion, but RV has done more than Helwig or McCain ever thought of doing here. Castiaglone or Dodds could not do much better given the poor history of support here.
  2. Has USC roots as well. Hopefully, it will be easier for him to continue to build on what the last guy started so the players don't have to make any major changes so close to the season. I think this is a good hire.
  3. This position is a big part of what takes to have a successful programs. UNT has a former player who is one of the best strength coaches in the business by the name of John Lott who is the strength coach with the Arizona Cardinals. Wonder if any calls have been made to him for a recommendation. He may know of some coach some where who is looking to go to a Div. 1 program to make a name for himself.
  4. I kick myself for wasting a trip to Houston a few years ago to see this guy pitch. I followed him his entire career, he was one of my favorite athletes because he was a Texan He is a liar, no doubt. And you know, I now think even Nolan Ryan probably was juiced late in his career. Just venting.
  5. Went to high school here in Denton and played high school ball with him. He had more "attitude" than talent and made the best of it. Some of you guys probably had his dad for biology at UNT. He is super guy. Congrats Big John, throw some of that Cardinal magic our way.
  6. FWIW, one of our regents lives in Denia and I have yet to see her at a stadium presentation. As for as the griping, RV and DR B can simply solve it by opening up with everything. There has not been a consistent company line/message of how this project is going to work.
  7. It will take a lot of big pines!
  8. David slaying Goliath in a football playoff system is not going to happen near as often as it does during March Madness. And that is what makes it so exciting, to see a Duke or UNC taken down a George Washington Univ. team. Besides, the big schools (ie OU or Ohio St.) will argue that is not cost effective for them to go and play a Ball St or Buffalo in a first round game in say St. Louis, then maybe step a notch at another neutral site to play another upstart. They will argue that their fans will not follow, as they do for one bowl game, plus the cost of travel for not only the team but the bands as well. If we get a playoff system, you can bet TV revenue will be the driving force, and it will drive the small programs ( like ours, the MAC, maybe Conf USA) right out of the picture, unfortunately. There may be a "wild card" for say a Utah, Boise St., or a TCU, but that's about it. That's not how I nor any fan wants it, but unfortunately, the $$$ will determine how this plays out. Obama will not be able to fix this one.
  9. First, they did get approval from the NCAA. The assistant coaches pile in this for their recruiting trips. Here is the link for the story: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4107736
  10. Pretty gutsy move by Jones and Co. Injuries kept him from really getting the opportunity to prove to fans what he might me able to do in a pro style offense. Sherman must have seen something in him as well for him to get this chance. But he was taken ahead of Rhett Bomar, Graham Harrell, John David Wilson, and Chase McDaniel. I am surprised they would have drafted him, thought he was more of a free agent type. But, looking back on his career at A&M, nobody can question his motor. Maybe they see a resemblance to Romo, who knows.
  11. I would guess the location (right next to the pit), and the master plan of change on that part of campus, plus area off campus on that side started to decline about that time. Hurley lived in Montecito, and I thought the university owned that home, maybe not. I don't blame somebody for not living where they work anyway, and these admins certainly have a right to a personal life.
  12. If there were a change in AD now, I def believe it would set the stadium project back at least a year. I mean, unless they give the interim reins to somebody like Hank, I think it would set a lot of things back. And there would be no guarantee that the next athletic director would in as big a hurry to build this thing as RV is.
  13. Deep Green, not enough people took notice. Outside of our fans who attended the games over this span, most did not think anything of it. The DFW media mentioned very little, if at all. And we never got one of those warm and fuzzy stories on say ESPN or a FOx sports show. I know many outsiders think the four championships were no big deal because of our OOC record and the conference in which we won them. That said, the championships were still in Div. 1 college football. And we all know, with the ups and downs we have witnessed over the years at UNT (lack of alumni support, lack of support from most admins, etc) it was one heck of an accomplishment and something that all Mean Green fans should hold their heads up about.
  14. 80, You are right. Not everybody thinks the warm fuzzy stories like Boise State, Utah, and soon TCU are good for college football. By that, not the ones who control most of the money. And while there may be a playoff system, it will not be like the NCAA BB Tourney where David has a chance to play and beat Goliath. For example, OU is not going to be thrilled at all to show up at a playoff site like St. Louis and play a Ball St. or Buffalo in the first round. Schools like them will do everything in their power to keep the little guys out of the mix, IMO.
  15. I do not think it will take until 2020 for that belly aching to start, bet it starts in 2012.
  16. Great points Miner! I can't help but wish, so here goes. In our state, the only school amongst the little guys like us (UH, heck even Baylor now, UTEP, Rice, SMU, Texas State as their program grows) that has shown the most potential for the national stage is TCU. They have beaten some good ooc opponents, and have come close to making a case for a BCS bowl bid. Take a dozen plays or so, and they might be the story that Utah is. The best thing is for these schools, and maybe throw Tulsa in, to get together and remake a Southwest Conference. I know we are not competing money wise with Baylor and SMU, but their programs have not exactly been stellar even with the resources they have. But, a Southwest Conference would generate more interest amongst the casual fans from all these schools because people would talk about the games at work, school, church, etc. I go to church here in Denton, and when Kansas State upset Texas last year, a lady wore her K State sweatshirt to church the next day. I just do not think that the casual fans (which are the ones we need filling the seats in our stadium) from our alumni base will ever get excited or care if we beat the Fla. Atlantics, etc and have never talked to one of their fans here that rubbed it in that they beat us. It just does not make for good water cooler talk.
  17. Danger dog is the slang term for a type of hot dog first sold by street vendors in Tijuana, Mexico and is also known as a "Tijuana bacon dog" or a "dog dog." A danger dog is a hot dog wrapped in a piece of bacon, fried in oil and served on a bun with grilled onions and chili sauce. The term "danger dog" originates from this form of hot dog's reputation as being of cheap quality (or presumed low quality, as it is usually sold by unlicensed street vendors). The danger dog has recently turned up north of the border and is now being sold by Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City street vendors. On the east coast of the United States, a variation has appeared with the bacon-wrapped hot dog being deep-fried and called a "Jersey breakfast dog"[1]. There is a tradition in New Jersey of serving hot dogs that have been deep-fried in boiling oil until they rip apart ("rippers") or just blister lightly (an "in and outer"). The Jersey dog is usually served atop fried or scrambled eggs.
  18. No envy here. I agree with Lifer, he is a cancer. And the only basketball that matters in Florida is at FLORIDA. Magic and Heat are easy tix to get, so just like in TX, basketball takes a back seat to football in the swamps.
  19. I enjoyed meeting all of you. It is good to get together and put these aliases we have here with faces. I know we share different points of view and opinions on this board, but all of hearts are "Mean Green". If there is a game next year, which I bet there will be, we'll be there to serve up some grub again.
  20. Has anybody seen any members from the board of regents at the hearings? I was disappointed that many of them were not in attendance at the stadium presentation last Saturday. Only one was introduced, and that was the vice chair.
  21. Solich would have had to sober up to have noticed.
  22. One good thing about Fouts is that we can tailgate right outside the stadium. Looks like with the new stadium we will be like the most of the college football world and have a long hike from the tailgate areas to our seats in the stadium. Oh well, that is a small sacrifice. And a good opportunity to walk off the beer and bbq.
  23. In the presentation Sat., Dr. B mentioned they were talking w/ TX DOT to build a pedestrian bridge over 35 from the fouts lots.
  24. Right on, we cannot get our hands on any of the "really" cool stuff. Try to purchase a shirt that one of our coaches wears, or a hat, or even the shirt RV had on. You can't! The good stuff is only for athletic department personnel.
  25. I think they ought to send Colt to Abilene Christian to throw passes to his brother. He has no business playing at the DIV 1 level after his showing in the spring game. Take his name off the Heisman list! And then, UT needs to find a real coach, one who will bring the program up to standards with everybody in the nation. The spring game proves the program is in a spiral. Wake up UT!
