Is Td Able To Evaluate Talent ?
Green Dozer replied to houstonmeangreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Ok. we disagree about the pass thing, but I have not seen a "Fire Deloach" thread started. The defense has improved, but so has our offense. Sorry, but I don't count the Alabama game. But us scoring 30, 34, and 40 points should be enough to win a football game. 21 points, maybe not. But when your game goes down to who can make the last big play this is what happens. After Riley went down, the defense did not step up like they should have. They should have tried to take over the game, yet we call out the offense who did more good than bad to win the game. Sorry can't get the exact stats, but I bet it is well above 70% that a football team scores 40 points at home to an 0-3 conf team and wins. But 99, we have improved on both sides of the ball, and though I thought the defense let up a little, I did not see anybody on our team quit. Your question is hard for me. I think with a couple of seasons under this defense, and maybe a couple of playmakers step up next year or we get a hard hitting corner or safety via JUCO, then the defense will lead us to New Orleans again. -

Cu Made A Qb Change, Upset Kansas...
Green Dozer replied to The Fake Lonnie Finch's topic in Mean Green Football
No, you are wrong (LOL). If they score 50 on us, then we have got to score 51 score 3 we just have to score 4. The defense nor the defensive staff is responsible for the points allowed stat, nor any stat for that matter. All phases of the game are the responsibility of the offense. Not Deloach, just Dodge should shoulder any blame. Now if we ever win, then I think we should change North Tx Blvd to Gary Deloach Blvd. -
Is Td Able To Evaluate Talent ?
Green Dozer replied to houstonmeangreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Is Deloach able to evaluate talent? I mean 40 points wins most football games, except when you give up 43. Riley or Nathan did not give those points. Oh, thats right, Deloach gets a pass because he has "skins" on the wall. Unfortunately those skins did not help us last night. -
I just do not get the feeling that there is any major concerns about Dodge except here on the board. But it is a good sign that there are people who care. At the coach's show on Monday, when Dodge and George were going over the improvements from last year and alluded to how close we are to this team learning how to win(Translation=glossing or putting lipstick on the loss), having a break out game RV was nodding and smiling in complete agreement. I also do not think anybody is calling from the chancelorr's or the president's office with concern as to how things are going. I also look back on RV's talk at the picnic earlier this year, and I did not sense that Dodge has any ultimatium as for as the # of wins he needs to keep his job. I think he could keep things close, have 1 or 2 more wins this year, and he keeps his job. I still hold belief that when he took over here, this program was at rock bottom. The only difference in between us and another college starting a program was that we actually fielded a team in our first couple of years. And you better be careful what you wish for. If Dodge were fired, and lets say hypothetically RV walks with him or is fired to, then I believe the admin will put the brakes on the stadium project and the excuse will be to get things settled in the athletic department. Just my opinion. ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, NOBODY CARED AND DEBATED ALL THESE ISSUES 10 YEARS AGO, SO THINGS ARE BETTER ON THE FAN SIDE OF THINGS!

Friday's First Practices Are Open To The Public
Green Dozer replied to SUMG's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I don't agree. These athletes put in so much time to their sport year round these days, I think that is asking a bit much. I see your point, but mandating them to attend a game is not right. -
Friday's First Practices Are Open To The Public
Green Dozer replied to SUMG's topic in Mean Green Basketball
One thing that would be cool at bonfire would be to introduce the bb teams, and give us a chance to wish them well as they begin practice. Also, all the athletic teams should support each other, so I think the bb players should be at the bonfire. -
Oh please!

And a very diverse culture at that. But unfortunately, most convention goers are going to make a b line for the clubs and restraunts in Dallas, the Stockyards in Ft. Worth, are see one of the pro sports teams play. Sorry, but they are not going to stay in Denton to eat at Sweetwater, Fuzzy's or patronize Fry St. It simply is not a destination so to speak, and I don't see the hotels being full on game weekends in Denton in the past present or future. It is sad, but the Jazz Fest probably has more impact on the Denton economy than UNT football currently does. And the fault lies with both UNT and the city of Denton for that. I think we should work on getting our own alumni to the stadium that don't need a hotel room. There are more than enough within an hour's drive to more than fill our stadium.

When it gets down to it, the big boys like Texas, OU, USC are just the farm system for the NFL. So are you really rooting for the "school"? I mean you don't here to many Aggie football players calling for the bonfire to start back up because it motivates them to beat Texas. No, it is a place for them to major in football so they can get at a shot at the pros. To me, the big programs are big business and rooting for them is no different than picking your favorite NFL team. Yes, every few years, a Boise, Fresno, or Cincy shakes its rattle, but the 'farm system" is still it.

The midnight madness thing was brought up to Jay Bilas on Espn last year, and he said the colleges stopped it because of liability issues of the students being out that late, and the drinking that took place before and after. The colleges did not want to be held liable for any accidents or other things as a result.

Last I heard Hammond said they had not even given it "serious" consideration as had been rumored. But, and this was told to me by the Denton mayor himself, that they (Hammond) were not looking at any major projects until the economy shows some major improvement and that was not expected, as for as there projects are concerned, until 2011 or 2012. As a person living here in Denton, I do not think the citizens of Denton will support anything that they "perceive" as something being given to UNT. That is just the sense I get having lived here all my life. There have been some pretty resentful letters of the way Dr. B has spent money since she came to UNT in the letters to the editor. Many cities use a college to their advantage, but the city of Denton and UNT cannot seem to get along and realize the multitude of opportunities they both present for each other.

Cowher goes to Carolina. That is where he lives now, and has a daughter in high school + he will get full control there, won't happen here in Dallas. Shanahan is the most likely because he and Jones are friends, and Pat Bowlen is not exactly a hands off owner, so it won't be that big of a deal for him to have Jones looking over his shoulder. Plus, Shanahan would be the best quarterback coach of the 3. I don't think Gruden because he has already experienced a similar hands on owner when he was with the Raiders.

Thanks for the reply, but I did not mean bring Mendoza back. Hey, the degree from UNT teach me something. My point is you cannot continue to lay out 25+ points every game, and expect your offense to not have its back put up against the wall every time, no matter who the def. cood. is. Yes, you are absolutely correct.
-
Right on concerning Deloach. Mendoza took a lot of heat, so far, Deloach has not done that much more. I don't understand it, nobody utters a negative word. No, he should not be the new head coach. He had the players before under Dickey, but obviously does not now. We are the only group in the land that gives up 20, 30, 50, etc to an opponent and then expect our offense to be in every game. Everybody says how the defense has improved, yet expects a red shirt freshman to play on the level of a senior. Yes, Riley has been around this system for many years, but many said his dad did not have a feel for the speed of the game at this level his first year. Yet, we expect a 19 year old kid to know. If at the end of the year, if this thing is going to be blown up again, then everybody needs to go, and maybe we don't stop at the head coach as we work our way out of this. Frustrated, you damn right I am.

Don't think they open until 11:00. There are not any big games early so you should be ok. All the seats in the big room are good.
-
What the joke here is the lack of coordination between the Athletic Dept. and the parking nazis. It is the same problem. I thought if you got there early, and 11 is early, then you could park where you wanted within reason. I thought the strict enforcement started 4 hours before kickoff. It is also the same argument (just as John Denver says) with the parking passes. The blue lot is for donors, yet they are treated like dirt. The public lot seems to do whatever they want. It just should not be overblown like it is, and I believe the problem is more of our athletic department/facilities management communication. These guys are just doing what they are told. They just do not show up and make the rules, somebody at UNT is the one making and communicating it.
-
I think that the addition of a strength and conditioning coach has made a BIG difference. Ohio was a very physical team and we held our own the entire game. We would not been in this game last year. Even though we lost, my wife stated she could see how much improved we are.

I think Vito is right on with this. And if you listened to RV's comments at the cookout, he as much as said so. He made reference to the a lot of things that have happened were not all TD's fault. RV has never made a comment that it comes down to wins and losses. I think he could keep most games close (one way or the other with Alabama being the exception), and keep his job regardless of the record. And he was in some way, directly or indirectly, promised a stadium so I think he will at least see the first year in it.

George Dunham Talking About Football Rankings
Green Dozer replied to Green59's topic in Mean Green Football
When was Joe Green ever asked about his alma mater on National television? We have ridden his name and reputation like a pack mule ever since he left here. University of Miami players are the ones who really go out of their way to mention their alma mater anyway. -
George Dunham Talking About Football Rankings
Green Dozer replied to Green59's topic in Mean Green Football
Lonnie, I see your point about Miller growing up in Oklahoma. Miller never had anything good to say about UNT even during our Sun Belt Conference Championship runs. They did not talk UNT football then. Bet his broadcasting career would not have taken off like it has if had graduated from OU. Might not have hooked up with George, and might not have been able to make the ties to the Dallas Fort Worth market. His UNT degree has been good for him, just like Followill, who used to run us in the ground during his SMU broadcasting days. A guy named Mercer helped him. These guys have dumped on the one who brung 'em so to speak. -
I went to practice last night, and I really liked the tempo. Watching and listening to Nelson and Deloach chew butt was worth the trip. I was impressed with Riley, and yes he is fast, but he is small. Goof thing the offensive line is not super big, as it would effect him. Tune looked pretty sharp with his throws. DL looks bigger, could not really tell about the O line. It seemed the defense got to the quarterback pretty quick when they were scrimmaging. Hard to tell how big a deal that was since they were not at full speed, as they were not in full pads. Hope that is not the case Saturday morning. Don't get me wrong, I want our defense to get to the quarterback, just not our quarterback. And I second, 94 Gilmore is the total package.
-
Lonnie, You are comparing apples and oranges. Stoops and Brown don't take their camps on the road, and don't have to. Furthermore the alumni show up to hear from their coaches, good or bad at the universities you cite (and it is a limited few) in cities away from campus. Sorry to say, but ours don't. I have not seen an ad or an announcement on the UT or OU board inviting one and all to show up for some private time with Brown or Stoops.

He did go out and hold camps throughout the state. From what I understand, we were well received. We received some good publicity, because of Dodge, in the article on the spread offense recently at ESPN.com. We were also featured last week on Channel 8 last week and Hansen did not bash us. The only other coach profiled or interviewed last week was Patterson, so he was in good company. I don't see June Jones getting much publicity on the local tv stations. Who cares if he does not get along with Vito. The DRC is hardly read in Denton anyway, and no article in it has ever effected recruiting. He was also at the mixer at the Pourhouse on the 9th. Were you there? How many mixers over the past year have you attended? Not many, and with good reason, because you have a job to work at just like Coach Dodge does here. Most college coaches, and rightfully so, were on vacation at that time. Is there room for improvement? You bet there is, I will agree with you on that. Another few other things that are unique here. You can't go to Stoop's or Brown's call in shows and mingle with them before and after. Oh, and try to get a ticket to the football banquet at those schools at the giving level most of us are at here. You would not even get the scraps. Yes, they should do call in questions, but nobody steps up to the live mike except for 2 or 3 times in the entire season to ask a question. Lonnie, I cannot help but think that you would bash Dodge for hitting the banquet circuit, and not staying here, for example, to oversee the new strength coach or make sure the right color jocks came in. There is just not this overwhelming negativity towards Dodge as you want us to believe.

Saw a blurb on the Unticket that George Dunham will not be the Cowboys PA man at the new stadium. It was clear that this was Cowboys decision and not his. Hate it for George, I did not hear him at TX Stadium, so I do not know how good or bad he was. Oh well, I know we all love him and wish him the best.
