  1. 03, its not that big of a deal. If it was, he would not have been on the trip with pads on to begin with. I agree with what one poster said that you have to have skilled recruits for depth. Not every recruit is recruited to be all conference, there does need to be a good back-up, and perhaps that was what Thompson was recruited as. I think another coach pointing this incident out to a recruit is unlikely. Coaches don't get enough time with a recruit to talk about their own schools, much else all the little flaws of another. But you know what, if we had 5 to 6 wins under our belts and the call was made to put THompson in, then I bet this decision would be a topic on the board with maybe ten comments.
  2. This fits with what I have heard as well.
  3. Bower was also on the SMU staff from 1982 to 1986 as the quarterbacks coach under Bobby Collins. So, he was part of the staff that received the death penalty after the 86 season. Don't have a clue if he knew what was going on or not, but I would not want to take a chance given the fact we are so close to SMU and many of you believe we compete with them for recruits. For those who enjoy reading the SMU board, I am sure a move like this would create plenty of chatter.
  4. I do not know how many options you think he will have, but I feel pretty sure he will be the head coach or not a coach in any capacity on the UNT football team. He has been a head coach to long to take an assistant's position with the person who is replacing him. I would hope RV would not do that to him, he doesn't deserve that, and I would hope that he would get a new coach that is capable of hiring his own staff. I don't like the "Jerry Jones" model.
  5. Here is the quote from RV: "Coach Dodge, the president [Gretchen Bataille] and I will talk," Villarreal said. "It was a tough season. People want to look at the negatives, but there were a lot of positives. You look at the number of close losses, even today, where we fought back. There are a lot of good changes in this team. Coach Dodge, the president and I will formulate a plan and go from there." 6. Well, the athletic department is supported by donations, not by dollars from the university. You know, the admin and regents did not have to approve the building of the stadium. The athletic fee, though it is being used for the stadium, does not have to be. Are you a donor? If not, please step up to the plate and let the admin know you care. Sorry the new stadium is not "serious" enough for you.
  7. Guess this is what happens when you lose your kicking coach.
  8. First, to think we have $1 million dollars to pay a coach is laughable. And no, the university cannot spot the athletic dept any money. What does an adm need to do to show you they care? Were you at the ground breaking last Saturday? The alum should step up and now is the time.
  9. I agree in that you do not need a consultant. As for as the offensive system, most of these players come from some form of the spread in high school. It was not just invented, most schools run it. What I am saying it is the particular form of the spread that TD is now running is what seems to be the problem.
  10. 03, Yes, I agree we had better talent than Army as well we should given the priority that the academies put on sports. And yes, I think Gill would be a great coach. Buffalo has always paid their coach low, and is even now looking backing at cutting their athletic budge. Why we did not look at Gill is beyond me (there are many schools who obviously overlooked him), after all he did coach here as an assistant in the late 80's and is from Ft. Worth. As for Blakeny, and I know you were doing it for salary comparison only, but he was involved in NCAA violations at Auburn. That is why he has never been seriously considered by any other Div 1 programs.
  11. Dunbar does not have the special needs as J-Mo, so don't think Dunbar is a lock to stay based on that comparison. '03, do you mean we are 5X more talented than Army? As for as the salaries you point out: Chris Ault, Nevada, also draws another salary because he is the athletic director, and has been there for many years. I believed he retired for a year or so, then took the job back. Obviously does not want to be anywhere else. Turner Gill: Buffalo got very lucky, nobody else wanted to take a chance on him. Larry Blakeney: currently holds the only head coaching job in Div. 1 that he will ever have. CMU: don't know enough about them to render an opinion.
  12. Flyer, I was at the coach's show today...sat at table next to RV. He did not seem upset, and stayed through the whole show. I did not get the sense a man pondering the future of the head football coach. Of course he sure did not lean over and tell me directly what he was thinking, but I believe from what i saw and heard today that Dodge will be back. Now if you are so sure about next Tues, please let us all in as why you feel so strongly there will be a change. You are putting as much energy into the fact there will be a change as cr1028 is coming on here SELLING (as if any of us really have a say) to give Dodge another year. So, what is your basis, any inside info?
  13. You are right Radio Green. I cannot believe somebody would come here and accuse a competitor like Riley of something like faking an injury or even hint that his Dad would work in collusion to do something like this. Do you realize how much effort it would take to cover something like that up? Sorry, these kids are not getting paid enough to participate in cover ups. I have seen some poor decision making in Riley's play and in his Dad's coaching, but the decision to fake an injury is not one of them
  14. Agree....Tune has paid his dues, has been a good company man and deserves serious consideration to be the starter next year. All jobs on the team should be open! He would be a good qb in any spread system except this one. I was excited when Dodge brought the "spread" to UNT. Man, I thought we would be the Tech of the Sunbelt. I have been disappointed as this offense is a high school spread, not a college spread. So. me saying Tune would not be successful in it does not mean I think he is a poor quarterback. Quite the contrary, he is a winner. The truth is that a college quarterback cannot be successful in this high school offense.
  15. Jeff Bower's Texas connection is the fact that he was the SMU QB coach from 1982 to 1986. So he was on the staff when the NCAA gave them the "death penalty". Does anybody think this might be a negative, as in used against him, as for as recruiting if he were to come to North Texas? P.S. It would make good publicity for us on the SMU boards
  16. Yes, he does have a strong arm. He has good size and can sure see down field. Watched him at the open scrimmages and I thought he looked poised. As for the foot work, can't imagine he had a quarterback coach at Glen Rose. Most of those schools have a qb's/rec coach, so not much 1 on 1. I think with some work, he will be pretty good.
  17. He still posts from time to time.
  18. 03, this is not just directed at you, but at several. I have seen these suggestions to keep Dodge and Deloach around if we hire a new coach. Some of you must like the "Jerry Jones" model. I can here RV offer a guy the job, and tell him we want you to come here and build a winning football program. Then, goes on to tell him we have a new stadium in 22 mos., the fired coach who won 3 games is staying as qb coach/possibly off coordiantor., his son is the quarterback, and we also have the def. coordinator. Then RV tells him other than that, you have complete control. Now I know I would want to coach under those circumstances. I say send Dodge over to work with the NT Foundation or something like that if you relieve him of his head coaching responsibility and let the new guy interview the coaches on this staff as he wants. I am sure if the new guy has been in coaching for quite sometime, then he will know Deloach and Nelson. They may not want to stay. If you are going to change, then do a complete change. You are crazy if you think Dodge is going to step back and be a great soldier under somebody who just replaced him as head coach.
  19. What???? This makes no sense, such an unrealistic comparison.
  20. Emmitt, were you and your gang in Stillwater yesterday?
  21. Yes Sir, Congratulations, and you deserve at least 15 min more!
  22. You need to re-think this one. There is a reason why so many assistants from OU have left to be head coaches and he has not. A good coordinator, but not a head coach.
  23. You can bet Johnny Jones is not going up there to lose!! That is one thing we do not have to worry about with him when it comes to playing a big time ooc opponent. If it were not for tailgate obligations (somebody has to cook) I would go. GMG!!! Beat the pokes!
  24. Guess we not only rank high in kind fans, but kind linkers too.
