Applewhite is not the guy for this job, but no doubt he has great potential. Besides, as close (a fact I know to be true) as Dodge is to the Texas staff, I doubt he would take it. Applewhite has plenty of time to wait out the right opportunity, the money would not be that important. I also think he is the next "head coach in waiting" should Muschamp decide to leave. He will at least be offensive coordinator as it is rumored that Greg Davis will retire soon. We need somebody with some age, and I think head coaching experience. Great soldiers don't always make good generals. The more I think about it, this maybe a job for a coach who is sitting on a sofa to have a fresh start. Right now, unfortunately, no where to go but up.

Would A New Coach Right Now Make Sense?

Cool, I get it. Just questioning the public part at this time. Thanks! -
Would A New Coach Right Now Make Sense?

Duh, really? Thanks for your insight (NOT). My reply was to the fact that a head coach, or even assistant at another school is not going to want it to be made public he is seeking a job at this point in time. I took 90's post as there should be a "public" search right now, and I disagreed with that. SHould RV talk to anybody and everybody, heck yes! Only in private for now. -
My point of view has to do with the character issues. Didn't he have some problems at Auburn that had nothing to do with what took place on the field? And there have been plenty of jobs available since he left Auburn, yet he ends up at Northern Alabama. Not dissing hie success on the field, but I believe there are just more all around solid coaches out there. Besides, recruits in Texas are not going to know who he is, and unlike Coker which many on this board believes is the 2nd coming of Bear Bryant, he does not have a ring to wave around.

Would A New Coach Right Now Make Sense?

Like you would do if you were in his position? It is neither the classy or right thing. Do you give away half your check when you screw up at your job? Ever made a mistake in your computer programming? And please don't answer that he should because of the amount of money he has made, and still will get paid. He got a salary commensurate with the position. We agreed to the contract and we should honor it. In hindsight, maybe wins, losses, and attendance should have been a part of it, but they weren't. -

You really think a coach at another school, head or assistant, is going to really want it known that he is seeking another job at this point in the season? -
I agree that it is better, but unfortunately we have caught up with many high schools within a 50 mile radius of Denton as for as facilities. I think Allen is spending as much for a stadium as we are. Yes, much has improved, but we are still closer to the bottom than we are to the top. For example, I was at another school watching a game earlier this season, and a donor was recognized for a $10 million contribution to their women's athletic facility. That is close to our overall athletic budget. Rick was smart to buy the Liberty property, but also luck that it was available in such close proximity to the campus. And it took some creative financing, it certainly was not purchased with donations to the Mean Green Club.

Would somebody tell me what corner we are turning on? We have lost, what 23 players to injuries, and we don't know how it will affect the ones who have eligibility left when they return next year. We graduate many key players, and many say Dodge has not recruited well, and I agree in areas such as defense he has not. This was suppose to be the year, and then we were looking at somewhat of a rebuilding year next season. There are many other factors like penalties, the win-loss record, etc. The players have responsibility for the win/loss record as well. Attitude will change some of it, but not all. Obviously, Dodge and this staff did nothing to correct the penalties (nobody got livid on the sideline when 2 personals were called in one series in the ULL game), but they also were not suited up when they were called. I thought at one point, it might be good to have Canales due to having some continuity. I think we need somebody with head coaching experience at this level, and perhaps somebody who has success at a mid major like we are. There is a reason why Canales has yet to be a head coach, just as many are seeing why Turner Gil's first gig was Buffalo. Just because a coordinator is all fired up, and looks good on Youtube does not qualify him to be a head coach. As for the strength and conditioning, it does need to be thoroughly evaluated. Even an untrained eye can see that during the walkover before a game. Some bulk, but not enough. And in a few cases, the bulk is in the wrong place. We need somebody who can train them in the weight room and the dining room.

We can do better than this.

Did not say he was not a stud. He also had a pretty good team handed to him when Hawkins left, and he has done a great job keeping it going. But he also called the play and his players ran the play, not him. They have the talent to do it, we don't. I think the stadium will help, but there are more pieces to the puzzle that get your 3 star and up recruits to come. We are still a little ways from those pieces.

Your kidding, right? Where is the punch line?

Payable when he gets us to us a better conference?

$1,000,000 huh? Will your increased donation be cash or charge?

Thank you Sound Man. I will be able to sleep tonight knowing you are protecting our world from bad scoreboards. (note: simply joking with Sound Man)

North Texas Coach Todd Dodge Wouldn't Have His Son
Green Dozer replied to gangrene's topic in Mean Green Football
Also at Celina, Plano (when it was a one high school town), Odessa Permian, etc. Even Chase Daniel's dad said they moved Irving to Southlake after Chase attended one of Dodge's QB camps, but it was a few years (like 8th or 9th grade) before he played varsity. Plano was the Southlake in the 70's and 80's. What I am saying is they obviously did a better job than what Southlake did in their latest recruiting coup. -
Flyer, Neinas says in his report that the student fee will go towards the stadium. So then, where will the "lot more" come from? In addition, a proven head coach is not going to bring bargain salaried assistants. Plus, Dodge still has to be paid for the remaining year on his contract. I mean, after this year, I would think he would need some time off to get his batteries recharged. So please explain where all this extra money is coming from. I agree with Tasty that we could get to 500K, but you infer that we could get to 800K to a million.

North Texas Coach Todd Dodge Wouldn't Have His Son

So, what did he do to get fired? I would say there are two sides to every story, especially termination of employment. Maybe he was relieved of his coaching duties, but I bet he still collected a paycheck until the end of the year and kept his teaching position. Have you heard the other side of the story? -
It was good to see the the mens basketball team last night and know that bb is just around the corner. When the coaching change takes place with the current football staff, what will the domino effect be on the future of the basketball program? If JJ wins another conference championship and goes to the big dance, he may well get the offer that we can't match. I think he will most certainly get it if he wins at least one game in the NCAA tourney. What my question is will we be able to find a suitable replacement for him should he leave, and pay for quality Div. 1 football coach and staff. The challenge with our basketball program is that it is no longer a rebuilding project, so a suitable Div. 1 coach is needed for it as well. Maybe Tasty, Oldtimer, etc could explain how competitive our head basketball coach's salary in relation to our position in the college basketball landscape. I think Coach Leonard is like Deloach, just does not want to be a head coach. We might consider Coach Riker who moved to San Angelo after being an assistant here under Jones. A lot of you old guys will be wishing for Danny Casper.

Interesting Fact About Corky Nelson...
Green Dozer replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Even the defensive coaches bring the offense of their former school. Hopefully, Venables is not on the list. -
Well, Debbie Dedmon is a UNT grad, and Dale Hansen's daughter went here. As a matter of fact, Hansen donates to support some book collection. Plus, I bet there are a lot of UNT RTV grads behind the scenes as well. Johnny Jones used to be a regular on the sports show that ran on 27 or 52, which was actually put on by Channel 8. I think they have been better to us than have the other channels.

Interesting Fact About Corky Nelson...
Green Dozer replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
16 head coaches since 1913, and only 5 have had overall winning records: Jack Sisco (192 5-1938) 74 wins 37 losses 10 ties J.W. St. Clair (1915-1919) 20-10-3 Theron Fouts (1920-1924) 23-14-2 Odus Mitchell ( 1946-1966) 122 wins 85 losses 9 ties (*also won 9 conference championships) Hayden Fry (1973-1978) 40 wins 23 losses 3 ties Darrel Dickey had a little over .608 winning avg in conference play where he had 31 wins and 20 losses. -
Boise State, and very wisely, promoted from within when Hawkins left. Thus, they had continuity, which I think is what it takes to win year in and year out.
-
I think you start Baine Saturday, and go with him as the starter the rest of the season. Another valiant and courageous effort by Riley on Saturday will do more harm than good this time around, IMHO.

Interesting Fact About Corky Nelson...
Green Dozer replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Well Rick I guess I fall into that argument. But falling into that class does not mean 0-10 seasons or 2-9 seasons are justified in building a program Was Boise built within a couple of years? Or a few weeks into a season? I am looking at Boise State as the mark, and you don't get there over night. Other schools like Fresno, TCU, and Southern Miss laid a strong foundation and stuck with a plan. They did not bring in the latest offensive genius or even the biggest names to do it. Boise has a unique offense, but they promoted Petersen when Hawkins left. We are 137-214-3 since Fry, and the average tenure of our coaches since Fry has been 4.4 years. Only one coach since Fry has left here to move to another Div 1 school and that was Moore, the rest (except Dodge) have been fired. Firing Corky was one of many stupid decisions here. I don't want to nearly beat people, and be number one in the lowest conference in the land forever. It takes a start of a plan and staying with it. We have never done it here. I am tired of this 4 years and the coach is gone stuff. I want a guy who is brought in here, and is given some real ammo to hunt with. Then in 5 or 6 years, when he retires or moves on to another job, we are built to promote from within and not miss a beat. Your right, you can win right away, but continuity in winning is what takes time. To clarify, you are correct in your post. I am just giving my view as "It's gonna take several years for the next coach to get us in the right direction" arguer.
