So we can't define "drunk" and we can't define "danger to self or others". So if I'm sitting in a bar after having three beers minding my own business, it's perfectly fine for an officer to arrest me because it's "possible" that I might drive home and "possibly" get into a wreck. This is not a slam on you Emmit, because I don't know you. But a big chunk of police folks I've encountered have a huge power complex (apparently the TABC is a good example). I don't want them to have such open ended power.

I have no problem with charging public intoxication if it is in conjunction with another crime (disturbing the peace, assault, etc.), but to arrest someone because they are drunk, especially inside a private establishment, who has committed no crime is beyond belief. If someone is intoxicated how dare you arrest them because you feel its clear a crime could be committed. I don't want someone arrested for something they haven't done.... This law needs some major reworking.

I barely ever go out drinking, but I'm furious. Apparently, the TABC has decided that Texas law allows people to be prosecuted for being drunk IN A BAR. They have even been arresting people in hotel lobbies who are staying at the hotel... I encourage everyone to write their state congressman and the governor to put an end to this stupid stupid practice. Remember this while you are tailgating this year. You don't want to be arrested even if you are minding your own business.

High School Football Voaches Cashing In
MeanGreenTeeth replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
My post seems harsher than it was intended to be... If any of you are coaches I am not saying YOU are lazy. MY coaches were generally speaking...lazy... Also. I have no problem with coaches making more money than teachers. I'm just saying my coaches didn't work as hard as my teachers... I make much more money than my teachers did and I don't work near as much either.... -

Coach, I'm not here saying all coaches are lazy lecturers and all teachers work hard. I'm sure there are tons of both. That being said, the fact that you think you work harder because you stay later speaks volumes. The teachers I know work until 8 to 9 grading papers every night. I doubt your average coach does that teaching "mathematics for home finance" and government/economics (I pick on gov/econ because my coach would literally have us read the chapter in class everyday and do the problems in the back of the book..and yes he generally wore sweatpants and I think anyone who was awake got an A. It probably took him 60 secs to prepare for that lesson. Now it's been 10 years since I graduated high school so it might have changed a lot, but I doubt it could be so significant so quickly. Now just to note.... I am not a teacher.. I work in a business office... I just know a lot of teachers and I've known a lot of coaches. So I'm just basing my judgement on personal experience. That's not to say any of the coaches here aren't great teachers as well, but of all the coaches I've known I think probably about 1/3 were capable and I would say that I only had 1 really good coach who was also a good teacher.. -

I have to call you out on that a little bit. Most coaches I ever had (and I went to a few different schools) always taught the easiest courses (low level math, low level history, government/economics) and I can promise you that they did not put a 1/4 of the effort that most my teachers did. Most (good) teachers I know work about 10-12 hours a day all in all. That's not to say that coaches don't deserve their pay and yes there are probably a few coaches who teach AP Calc, but I call bullcrap on the general "Coaches work more" argument. -
You're welcome, lucky for you the judge through out the evidence. You really shouldn't leave those type of pictures on your computer...

A Crossroads For Rice Athletics
MeanGreenTeeth replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Agreed. Rice is in a bit of a different boat. Its academic standards are greater and its admission cheaper than any of the private schools just mentioned. Keeping football is just a matter of pride for them. It doesn't really help them in any way. -
God, I wish he would dump his 'news' show. I can't believe such a dim bulb can even get on the air.

Yeah.. I think it's telling that our hopes for the future seem to rely on an unacclaimed qb out of west texas. With the guy who was supposed to start at QB being dead, the backup not qualifying academically, and the 3rd stringer being gimpy and ineffective I guess we are pretty lucky he seems to have something...

Dan Meager = Richard Bridges Matt Phillips = Scott Hall Based on DD history, I can say unless Meager is seriously hury he will start.

How about we wait to see what happens next year guys? Despite our record, IMHO I don't think we are as bad as the 5-7 team of 2001. And the following 2 years were the best two teams since the Fry Era. Now if we are this bad next year you should start the site. If we are still bad the year after, then we can change our staff and actual have time to find a coach we like.

My Genius Wife Came up with Tilt-A-Field?
MeanGreenTeeth replied to Green Grenade II's topic in Mean Green Football
While I don't doubt the efficacy of this type of field, I'm afraid you have been beaten to it. Above is the very sad final picture of #82 ("Hapless Harry Hapland") as he attempted to retun a punt in the 1987 Apple Bowl. His body was never found.... -
No more Dickey bashing. Time to move on.
MeanGreenTeeth replied to Green Grenade II's topic in Mean Green Football
So are you saying I should drop my signature? -
The main complaint I remember hearing from players in the late 90's was that he always seemed more interested in future seasons than the current. I suspect that is a large part of why we are not only getting beat this season, but beaten so badly. The whole season is just one large spring practice. He suspects, accurately I think, that all will be forgiven if he can put together a good squad next year (though I think he is really building for the season after that) Anyway, just my opinion based on what I've heard from guys in the past. Someone correct me if I am way off base....

I think given the circumstances an open dialogue is a good thing. Even though this no doubt will cause disagreement among us, I hope the moderators will allow this thread to continue for a few more days at least. It is an important topic, even though it is a football board. Umm... no it is nothing like sacrificing a seatbelt to make a cheaper car. Please detail how drilling in ANWAR and letting new refineries be built is comparable to kids flying through windshields. Yeah, I don't think anyone is making that argument here. Could you please detail for me your evidence that drilling in ANWAR and letting new refineries be built will cause asthma? Yes, I applaud such efforts, but it isn't really going to be enough, even if done on a large scale to curb our energy issues is it? That's nice and I hope that the research goes well, but Hydrogen (which is the media darling it seems) can only be easlily extracted from, you guessed it, fossil fuels. There really is no escaping it. Personally, I like the idea of increasing our nuclear power. It is actual pretty ideal if managed in a very non-russian type way. But a lot of the greenie's would rather see us go back to the depression rather than open another nuclear plant. Some people won't be happy until everyone is poor and miserable (but by God our air will be very palatable)

I can't beleive how many people out there lap this "oh we need to conserve more" "oh we need smaller cars" "oh we need to drive electric cars (where the heck do some people thing electricity comes from, the energy fairy?)" I'm as annoyed as anyone with the gas prices, but really, these things are cyclical. There is going to be a bust, and boy will it be a bust. There is too much speculation in the market right now. There will be a sell off eventually and we will be okay. And despite what some people feel about "the oil Companies" it's really not a bad thing for them to make a nice profit every once and a while. It will increase their capital expenditures and will make thngs cheaper for us in the long run. If we conserve to much, we go into a recession. If people aren't traveling there are going to be big hits in a lot of industries. What would help more than anything would be for us to relax our environmental regulations so that we could actually build some new refineries and maybe even drill in ANWAR. /not an economist/stayed at Holiday Inn Express
