Expectations for the rest of the season
ForneyGreen replied to untjim1995's topic in Mean Green Football
I am on record for 4-8, and I had us beating SMU (other wins are Bethune-Cookman, at UTSA, and at UTEP). Getting more than 2 road wins would be really tough... but maybe we have a decent chance to win at Rice based on their Week 1 performance. Or... we could catch the MUTS or Southern Miss on a "down" week at home. Anyway, twill be fun watching this group grow and improve through the season. -
Agreed 110% Morris didn't have a good night... not a MiniMac disaster of a night, but not good. Too may overthrows, underthrows, and holding the ball too long. He also had some good, crisp passes too, so there is hope. Coach Harrell was absolutely livid at AM after one of the sacks he took. From a coaching perspective, I didn't like the jump ball play on 4th and 1... that seemed like a new OC still feeling his way.

MGB: UNT paying consultants $20,000 to evaluate program
ForneyGreen replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
$20,000 gets you the above information in a nice looking PowerPoint document :-) I think we do need to spend the money to get Smatty as much info as possible so he can make the right decision. Ultimately, the success of a consultant's report isn't based on how many of the suggestions you implement - it's based on whether or not you make the right decision in the end. -
Just renewed my season tickets and MGC membership. I trust in Smatty, and I think this (and the Littrell hire) is part of a plan he has envisioned for quite some time. Glad to see the plan is moving forward.

It's hard for me to imagine that Caleb was a HS QB when I see his throws... hope the new staff is able to somehow use him productively. Very glad to hear Shanbour is getting reps as Morris' backup.

MGB breaking news -- UNT lands high school QB
ForneyGreen replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Can he grow taller? Check (maybe) Listed at 5'11", which means that he is really 5'10" and a little bit. But a lot of kids grow 1-2 inches between 18 - 20 yrs. I think he is a good find - could be a great find if he develops well over the next couple of years. -
Hey, we're a music school - math really isn't our bread-and-butter

2015 C-USA Soccer championship final UNT WINS!!!
ForneyGreen replied to outoftown's topic in Mean Green Football
Yup - we just need to go to Lubbock and take care of business. We can beat Tech... should be a very good game. If/when we win, Tech probably will feel like they were hosed having to play the CUSA Champ in the first round. -
Sent mine tonight and used both president@unt.edu and neal.smatresk@unt.edu . I focused on President Smatresk's desire for UNT to be a Tier 1 university and how athletics is currently damaging that image rather than enhancing it - and that wholesale changes are needed in the athletics department.

Lowest Apogee attendance was 13,142 on 10/8/2011 (Florida Atlantic game). Will we set a new Apogee low tonight?

UNT -- 30 PSU -- 27 Being homecoming, and probably our best chance at a win this year, I think the team has 1 "rally game" in them to squeeze out a field goal victory with a lot of rushing yards. Attendance: 17.5k

Agreed - it looked bad, and the look on a player's face tells us a lot. He definitely needs our thoughts and prayers.

Back To 2007 Dodge Defensive Days
ForneyGreen replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Coach "Cush" has installed quite a cushy defense... no more flying to the ball or hard hitting - just 15 yard cushions on receivers and lot of out-of-place defenders. -
Ditto... I'm not waiting any longer - it's time to clean house.

Best. Urinal. Ever. It was quite amazing (shocking at first) when peeing on a wall with water running down the side - but offered a certain sense of freedom. Maybe they should have saved the old Fouts urinal as a museum item.

Everyone reminisce on your hometowns here
ForneyGreen replied to MeanGreenTexan's topic in Mean Green Football
Graham, TX - just north of beautiful Possum Kingdom Lake. Also the home of former player Tubby Coleman, who was involved in one of the "most damaging" plays in Mean Green history -
We lost because we turned the ball over too much... He hopes we improve to have a chance to win next week...

I would put most private Texas universities in a different league with "campus beautification and aesthetics" (e.g. Rice, TCU, DBU, etc.). Which is fine... those schools simply have more money to spend on campus beautification and architecture that most state schools. I would honestly say that UNT's campus look and feel is on-par with most state schools and definitely better than the urban/downtown campuses like UH and UTSA. UNT projects a *MUCH* better image today than when I started in 1986. At that time, the "gateway" to the university was a rusted metal sign at the corner of Ave C and Chestnut. Still a lot of work to do with the I-35 corridor, but we've come a long, long way from 1986.

Good assessment. I would flip Iowa and Southern Miss... I think (hope) we'll be competitive against Iowa, but I don't see a road victory at Iowa happening. I'll also go with 6-6

Growth in MGC and Season Tickets 2002-2014
ForneyGreen replied to Cerebus's topic in Mean Green Football
Great comments on this post from folks who love the Mean Green. My opinion... growth in attendance and support is driven primarily by excitement around a program, and excitement primarily comes from players and coaches. That excitement can come from winning, but the winning needs to be at a level that is "huge news" (e.g. TCU going undefeated in 2010). While our 8-4 football record in 2013 was huge for us die-hards, it was only a fringe accomplishment in the eyes of most folks and wouldn't drive noticeable gains in attendance. Excitement can also come from just 1 news-worthy player in a sport. Just think if we had a player come onto the scene like Trevone Boykin, Dak Prescott, Taysom Hill, etc. Having a player in the news and part of sports conversation instantly drives up attendance and excitement. Not all of those attending will become Mean Green die-hards, but some will get hooked on the program. During Lance Dunbar's senior year, I was able to get friends to UNT games simply by mentioning Lance because they wanted to see him. In 1988 (my sophomore year), people came to UNT games just to see Scott Davis because there was hype around him. For all of RV's accomplishments in facilities, the lost years due to poor hiring of coaches in our major sports is his biggest downfall. If we can't generate a material increase in excitement around our programs over the next 2 years, I would say that it is time to make a change at AD. We'll see how the next 2 years go with Coach Mac, Benny, and Jalie. -
My quick hitters on offense... QB - Dajon is our one C-USA caliber guy right now - McNulty would make a solid 2nd team QB - Impressed with Means - still young but lots of composure and leadership - team reacts well to him RB - Wilson is a definite #1 (O-Line didn't help him much today) - Ivery and Ezzard are really fast - great change of pace WR - Harris is a stud - Goree is going to be a stud TE - Loving looked much better today than I've seen in the past - nice game

Football's Value to a University
ForneyGreen replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
Same situation with my son who will start his college career this Fall and most likely will attend a school other than UNT. The sports programs (or lack thereof) at a school seem to have no bearing on his decision. But here's the cool thing... he has been raised around UNT sports, wears Mean Green apparel, and loves the Mean Green. The Mean Green are his college teams, and I think that will always be the case, just like the Cowboys will always be his NFL team. All of that being said, I definitely agree that winning and all of the publicity around high-profile victories (especially football) may be the best overall marketing tool for a school, especially at the state and national levels. The value of having your school mentioned as a winner in the media is tremendous. -
I see this as SMU Sucks Suck it Ponies

I doubt it. So tired of UNT Athletics not even managing to be average in major sports. Not even average....
