If DD comes back (which I think he will 'cause of the contract).. ... and a good OC is hired ... and DD lets the new OC run a new offense with more than 5 plays ... and if a good OL coach is hired ... and if we can find a solution to the QB woes ... and if we're able to pull in some new OLine and DLine talent ... and if the team somehow becomes more disciplined then I think we have a chance at being competitive.

Ditto. Only Dickey can pull a defeat from the jaws of victory like tonight. And Flannigan. And every coach that has anything to do at all with the worst offense in the entire country.

What do you listen to while in your car ?
ForneyGreen replied to calvin's topic in Mean Green Football
Hey, I listen to The Ticket and 95.3 The Range, and I'm not very old. The Range is greatness! I also listen to 89.7 Power FM (Christian Rock Station). -
This is an interesting thread, as I've always stated that given more money, RV would make many more things happen for UNT athletics, including coaching upgrades. What did the TCU "Committee of 100" do when they raised money to get TCU athletics back on track? Did they have their own private account(s), or were their finances somehow tied to the university? I am definitely not touting that we should abandon direct contributions to UNT and its athletic department - I will continue to give all that I can and then some more. But, the idea of a private venture for a specific goal is intriguing as well.

LOL! That was a good one - thanks for the laugh UNTBill

Exactly. For all those who dream of having a high-profile head coach, go to RV with a big check in hand. The extra $150,000.00 per year to pay this type of coach doesn't grow on trees - it comes from us - and that is how we basically control the destiny of this program.
-
Too true... So, if RV were to go looking for another coach, he would need a committment from the University as well as a financial committment. I'm not sure that we'll get much more money (as a pct. of student fees) from the school. Most big time programs get their money from big donations. Would we Mean Green faithful open our wallets for RV to go and get a high-caliber head coach along with high-caliber assistants? Let's say that RV was on board with reassigning Dickey and grabbing a very good head coach - someone who would demand a salary in the $400,000.00 range. Would we come to RV with a 3 year financial committment (say 1.2 million) to make this happen? There are some notable exceptions to the "money = football success" formula, but not many. If we want that high profile coach, let's go to RV with open wallets and show him the support that he really needs. And FWIW - I do appreciate what Dickey and RV have brought to the program over the past 5+ years. We are further along in both talent and facilities (and fan base) than we were in 1994. Let's not tear it down - let's march forward. RV can only march faster if we give him the tools he needs.

If Dickey is too sick to coach, then why doesn't he step down or at least step aside for a while? We have not even been competitive at all the last 3 games. This is just becoming so ridiculous. Our offense is probably the worst in the nation. I've really tried to support Dickey and RF through all of the humiliating non-conference losses, and I've appreciated their efforts toward conference championships. But I really think that whatever little bit of magic they had is long gone. I would hate to see us play a good I-AA team because I think we'd get whipped at this point. Guys, we really need to take back our program - I fear that it is in a lot of trouble.
-
I can't imagine the look on my manager's face if I ever went to him and said "Look, sorry my group messed up so badly today - I just didn't have my group ready to work". Dickey is so freakin' frustrating - why can't he act like he cares? "Didn't have the team ready to play today... la-de-da, whoop-de-do, we have such a young team... ho-hum, skip-to-my-loo, did I mention that all of our kids are under 30 years old and are very young?... ho-hum" I've tried so hard to support this guy and his staff - this is becoming very, very hard to do.
-
He should blame himself. This loss is absurd, embarrasing, and unacceptable. The team's interest level is going to mimic the head coach's interest level, which seems to be about zero in OOC games until after the game is over. Tulsa and Akron were benchmark games for this program - guess there's always next year, and the next, and the next...

Mean Green,Golden Hurricane Report Cards
ForneyGreen replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Grades are pretty close to accurate. I would revise as below: Offense F Defense A- Special Teams B Coaching F------------------------------- I have no problems with the defense from last week - Tulsa could have easily hung 50+ points on us if the defense didn't play as well as they did last Saturday. -
Akron is riding a crest of nice recruits like many mid-majors do (remember UNT in 2002?). We've seen this with Toledo, Marshall, Bowling Green, etc. Tulsa is definitely riding a crest at this time as well. But inevitably, they will all have some down years in the coming future. Given the first 3 weeks of the season, I'm not shocked that we're 17.5 point dogs to Akron. Here's hoping that the OL line makes a 1000% progression between Tulsa and Akron...

As for me, I am very proud of our defense after this game. Seeing how bad our offense stunk, the score could have easily been just like last year if our defense didn't play at such a high level. Kudos to those guys for playing so hard and very well against a very good Tulsa offense. As for the offense, I am completely confounded that we kept beating our heads against the wall with running plays straight into the line. I think Woody only missed on one pass - and then we pull him from the game? Why not throw some quick slants to a wide out and make the defense pay for having their linebackers so tight to the line? Why not have a tight end sit in space 5 yards off the line - there was a lot of space out there. Our passing plays just take too long to develop, and we can't rely on the sideline Hail Mary to win games - that is a nice play from time to time, but you can't hang your hat on it. You beat a stacked-line defense with quick passing plays to your athletes, and they can make a defense pay for sitting on the run all night.
-
I agree that the O-Line hasn't played well - sounds like they were switching some guys out from time to time to try and find someone who would block. Of course, the Tulsa D did exactly what they needed to do and what every team will do with us until we can beat the scheme - pack the defense tight and blitz. Until our offense can burn a defense and make them pay for this line up, we'll see it over and over again. I don't expect a big change any time soon...

Back from the game in Austin.......
ForneyGreen replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
As for the missed tackles, I believe those were due to a combination of bad positioning (see the reaching arm tackle attempts) and Texas' speed. I don't think it was due to a lack of effort. Our secondary coach really needs to teach the safeties how to get into better position. As for the poor offense showing, I do attribute most of this to play calling. Dickey said that Texas didn't do anything "fancy" on defense - that may be true, but they did stack the line, kept the linebackers very tight, and did run a few run blitzes. Here are the facts - you're not going to run the ball successfully against a very good defense that simply has no respect for your passing game. I may be wrong, but were most of our negative running plays when we were running out of a one-back set? I hate losing a receiver, but we may have to keep a fullback in the game to at least get a block on the blitzing MLB or safety. Also, I would like to see us incorporate some more "quick" passing plays. It seems that all of our passing plays take sooooo long to develop. A decent way to beat a stacked-line defense is to run some quick slants and fly patterns - something that develops quickly and gets the ball into the hands of our fast receivers. -
How much is Erickson making to coach at Idaho? Just curious to compare to the Sun Belt coaching salaries.
-
I do agree that last year's team loses this game by a wider margin. We were more competitive this year than last. There is a tremendous discrepency in talent between these two programs. Texas is just quicker/faster at every position; we could not contain their speed on offense or defense. That being said, I feel better about our team at this point than after our last trip to Austin. We really, really need to put together a game plan for our offense to handle the "sell out to stop Jamario" defensive scheme - it's what we will see all year long.
-
Best: - Score was only 56 - 7 -- could have been worse - No major injuries that I know of - Wilson looked good at QB Worst: - Still no answer for 8-9 in the box defense -- we'll see it all year until our Off. Coordinator comes up with a scheme to make defenses pay - O-line appeared to be confused at times -- guess it's hard to block 8-9 guys - Blocked FG attempt - not a good thing.

I can't imagine that Quinn won't be on the field Saturday. It sucks that he won't be 100%, but that's football. This will be the second most visible game that he plays in all year from the media's perspective (most visible will be the NO Bowl...). I think Quinn would find a way to play in a leg cast.
-
Those boys in Austin better have their chin straps on tight - our defense is going to be fired-up and ready to put some hurt on the longhorns. Hey, if we can get the running game going, then it could be a decent game. I am really looking forward to seeing how the two QB's play on Saturday. GO MEAN GREEN!!!

Ditch the black pants and the black face mask... that's for high schools. All white on the road looks nice - very traditional - I hate tricked-up college uni's. I would also love to see son-of-worm on the helmets. I always liked the helmet logo that we had in the mid-80's (eagle with NT in the middle). I realize that it had to go since it carried the "I-AA stigma", but it was a nice logo. Are we using the "new green" uniforms that incorporate the new green used for branding (lighter shade)?
-
Yes, I did have surgery with 2 pins installed plus one wire. Obviously, I was not out there catching passes at the DI level the next week :-) But just trying to shed some hope that Quinn will be able to play in the opener. If the pain can be controlled, then I would think that he would likely play.
-
I've had a similar injury from soccer. This type of injury doesn't really prevent use of the hand, but it does cause a whole lot of pain. So Quinn's ability to play will be mostly dependent on the pain level - which should be better in about a week.

Hope she likes football...

PART OF THE SOLUTION or PART OF THE PROBLEM?
ForneyGreen replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Big West days? Heck, some of us were around for the losses against SFA, Sam Houston, and Northwestern (La) St. Bumping my season ticket purchase from 3 to 5 this year - also considering the MGC. Support the kids - support your University.
