Speaking of play calling... How can Mac and Chico explain why Brelan (arguably the best player on the field) has 3 touches on offense all game (1 rush and 2 passes)? Anything less than 10 touches per game for Brelan is ridiculous. It doesn't matter how much the defense might focus on Brelan - a good OC will figure out how to get the ball into the hands of the best player on the field.

What's your connection and why do you follow UNT?
ForneyGreen replied to Travis's topic in Mean Green Football
I knew that my only real college option (financially) was a Texas state school, and I had no particular affinity to any school or program. I was accepted to Midwestern State Univ as a walk-on for their men's soccer program. My best friend was going to North Texas State to run track and eventually convinced me to change my mind (1986). Since my friend and I knew the soccer and track coaches, we of course got a Kerr Hall room. Weird to think that was the "sports dorm" at one time. I started meeting some of the football guys at the dorm and then started following the scores more closely. By my sophomore year, I was attending every home game and talking-up the NTSU Eagles to my family and friends. Fast-forward to today, and my 17 yr old son now wants to attend UNT. He says it is because he loves the Mean Green; I think the female scenery on game day around Apogee has a lot to do with it Go Mean Green!!! -
Someone from Ball State is Butt-Hurt
ForneyGreen replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
Fortunately, the officials know the rules better than this Ball State fan. Helmet-to-Helmet tackles happen during the normal course of many plays. If an official sees a defender intentionally lead or launch with their head, then it should be called as a personal foul. If the defender has his arms and body in a "typical tackling motion" (as some officials will say), then the defender is typically not penalized for helmet-to-helmet (or for leading with their helmet). I say typically because a defender will/should get penalized for helmet-to-helmet when coming into a QB while the QB is standing in the pocket. In Lee's hit on #80, Lee is clearly in a tackling motion with his arms out and around the defender. Thus it is just a bone-rushing hit Here's a good example of when the call will be made... Defender makes no attempt at making a tackling motion and leads with the helmet. http://youtu.be/VvRKHy0QWZE -
UNT Says Beer Sales at Football Games Are Ongoing Discussion
ForneyGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
This needs to happen, and I have to think that it will. As was mentioned in another thread, live sporting events as a whole (including college football) are finding it harder to get folks to the event. Serving alcohol in Apogee to the non-club attendees would help attendance and bring additional revenue. The negatives are very few. We'll have an occasional spectator escorted out for being irresponsible, but that can be managed. I don't think the general serving of alcohol would have a negative impact on club-level membership. No doubt that access to alcohol is a current benefit for club-level, but the folks I know that spend that kind of money today are just as interested in all of the other benefits (better seating, camaraderie with other Mean Green die-hards, great service, etc.). I'm working to convince the wife that we need club-level seating next year, and I would still seek club-level seating regardless of general alcohol sales/availability at Apogee.- 17 replies

Me too :-) TCU is the much better team - they have underperformed for most of this year, making uncharacteristic silly mistakes (they made a ton today and let the ponies hang around). I can hardly wait until we get to put a serious smackdown on smu.

UNT Regents finance committee approves budget
ForneyGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
"In an interesting side note, UNT regent Don Potts reiterated that the school will have to add a women’s sport to offset the impact of having a baseball program will have on its standing with Title IX." This will be interesting to see what women's sport will be added along with baseball. I believe Rowing is the only CUSA women's sport for which we currently do not participate, although some of the rowing teams in CUSA are not "regular" conference members (e.g. SMU). -
Definitely not the best cover safeties in CUSA, but I'm not sure if there are 2 harder-hitting safeties in CUSA. Trice and Lee will make you pay for coming into the middle of the field. Both are also excellent with run support. Was also happy to see Zac Whitfield get back on the field - we will need him to be confident and ready once we get into CUSA play.

We also sit in 208, but not sure that I saw/heard the chants that Lurker mentioned. I really don't get too up-in-arms about long-time fans that get really down when things are going badly (e.g. first quarter of today's game). We've all been kicked in the nads enough over the years - I think the Debbie Downer reaction is just a natural defense mechanism Even after getting kicked in the nads over and over, year after year, these hardened Mean Green fans keep buying season tickets, coming to games, and they stay in their seats when the team goes down 20-3 in the first quarter. A game like today goes a LONG way toward making people believe that this thing really is turning around. When we started our 2nd half comeback, I kept thinking "if we can somehow pull this thing out against a very good Ball State team, people are going to start believing in this team". I think there really is something different about the 2013 edition of the Mean Green.

I'm glad someone else noticed how close that wide receiver screen pass from DW was to being a pick 6. That is a nice play to run when the cornerback is playing off the receiver and the receiver makes the corner at least start to back-up after the snap. But I wouldn't run this play very often, especially after Ohio has seen the film and will watch for this play. I'll be interested to see how many plays we run with a TE at the fullback spot. I would love to see some play-action passes to the TE coming out of the fullback position. I have a feeling this will be a very close game.
-
We did keep the passing game pretty basic - but I think DT's best play was the TD pass to Brelan. On that play, we were trying to run a TE waggle across the middle (one of Chico's favorite plays), and to their credit, an Idaho LB jumped the pattern perfectly. DT had the presence to not throw to a covered TE, avoid the rushing DLineman, and find his stud receiver. That's what we should expect from a 5th yr senior, and DT delivered.

Agreed - one of my more enjoyable games from beer time to game time. Dominating our opponent helps

Someone needs to notify their AD that the helmet is not right. It is supposed to be a blue helmet with "South Alabama" written in white letters.

Yeah, definitely our name as The University of North Texas is consistent with the current charter of the school to be "the state school that educates the North Texas region". When referencing our school to folks that just don't know much about universities other than UT and A&M, I find myself often saying "North Texas up in Denton" to give some level of reference. Actually, I seem to have more luck saying UNT and getting better recognition. Although, I've never been in love with UNT as a branding name either, it seems to have caught-on with a lot of folks in DFW. High school kids that I know who have visited our school recently will typically say they "visited UNT" or they are "going to UNT". It's a much more specific name than "North Texas" which can mean so many things. I would pay money (literally) to have the interlocking NT on our helmets, knowing for a few different reasons that we will never have a helmet or uniform that has "UNT"....
-
"North Texas" is just such a generic name and is used to describe anything and everything within a 50 mile radius of DFW. One of my happiest days will be when North Texas is removed from our football helmets. Plus, it is a tradition that we change our entire branding strategy about every 5-7 years, so why not do it again and get it right this time
-
Yuck - we leave the conference, and now they can't even get their logo right... There was nothing wrong with the old logo - it was one of the better conference logos IMHO

This made me laugh My sweet wife goes through the same thing every year as I pursue another year of football masochism with my beloved Mean Green.

They will always be MUTS to me!! Anyway, it's almost a term of endearment for the one semi-rivalry that we were able to establish during our swim through the Sun Belt - kind of like the Aggies refer to Texas as "tu" - it's a hug and a slap in the face all at the same time.
-
Actually I did notice a much more upbeat atmosphere after the football schedule was released - plus some nice, recent commitments. But that is the Mean Green Nation - one minute we're ready to cancel all athletic programs, the next minute we're talking National Championships
-
From the video, it seems the 22 mil might cover more than just the practice facility (new weight room, new locker room, new meeting room, lounge, etc.). If we were just looking at the indoor facility itself, I can't imagine it would cost 22 million. I would probably guess about 2 times as much as the new basketball practice facility.

UNT posts impressive performance academically in football
ForneyGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
While a team of 85 intelligent place-kickers would likely not lead to much on-field success, it certainly would garner a ton of national publicity. Let's do it!- 27 replies

I definitely have a lot more respect for Riley as a QB and player than for someone like Vizza. Riley was as tough as they come. I really hope he finds good success with his new coaching career. Vizza was talented and could have emerged as something special his junior year. His quitting football is still one of the strangest things I've seen. Oh well, I guess to each his own... it's just weird to read an article like the one Mean Green 93-98 posted and hear someone with a Div I football scholarship flat-out admit that they didn't like the early mornings and early evenings working on football. I also agree with MeanGreenTexas about Andrew Smith. Oh what could have been!!!
-
I also thought Trice had a pretty good year overall. In my opinion, he is not a good cover safety, but his run defense and his ability to quickly jump on short passing routes were both very good. Maybe he is our Roy Williams for you Cowboy fans :-) I would think that Trice's job is pretty secure, but nothing wrong with having some depth and better nickel options (and having someone to take Trice's place after next year).

Agreed 100% And this goes to coaching - our coach needs to be strong enough to tell Chris "hey, just lay the ball into the basket!!!" and Alzee "hey,, everyone in the Super Pit saw the open guy that you didn't pass to - pass it next time!!!". After watching this game, I honestly couldn't tell you what our offensive strategy is at all... that was the most inept offensive scheme I have ever seen at a North Texas game. UTA on the other hand had a definite scheme. Their scheme would work better if they had a couple of more athletic slashers to the basket, but it still worked pretty well because their perimeter guys were smart enough to drive if the outside shot wasn't open.

RV needs to be held accountable...
ForneyGreen replied to meangreener's topic in Mean Green Basketball
There was definitely a lot of give-up with some of our players tonight (minus Franklin of course). Tony and a few others just looked pissed and frustrated. I'm sure they hate getting whipped and they don't seem to know what to do about it. I'm not close enough to the program to know all that is going on, but it doesn't look like a very cohesive unit right now - and that is and always will be on the coach. All of us on this board want the same things - and I'm just getting fed up with seeing our 2 premier men's sports underachieving so badly. There is just no reason we should be so bad in football and men's basketball at this point in time. I WANT BETTER!!! Our 2 premier men's sports are not giving anyone a green light to greatness. I thank RV for his work with facilities and the Johnny Jones hiring. Other hiring has mostly been bad. Maybe time for a change at AD. BTW - Numbers 33 and 55 for UTA tonight... not the most athletic guys you'll see this year, but boy did they play hard AND smart. We could use some #33's and #55's. Also their #24? - very hard-nosed and again not terribly athletic, but fought hard and got some key rebounds and knew how to get into good rebounding position. Their coach is doing a good job - you could see the cohesiveness in that team.
