McNulty is still sort of a darkhorse, IMO. I think he'd still provide depth and competition. At the very least, insurance so you can redshirt the freshman.
-
I mostly agree. Too much has to happen between now and then, and anyone hanging their hopes on Berglund at this point is wishcasting. I DO think that it will be an open competition Thompson next year, because that's what I believe good coaches do. I believe they had one this year, and Thompson, as he did last year, proved better than the other options (which I've stated tells you all you need to know about them). Berglund's reported skillset should make him the best competition next year for Thompson. And the fact that he's not an incoming freshman increases the urgency to get him on the field. I personally like how our QB situation is going to be set up next year. You'll have an experienced senior in Thompson, a highly touted, highly recruited athletic QB in Berglund (with some years to play), and an outstanding freshman (knock on wood). IF (and that's a big if) things go as hoped, we'll have the kind of depth and skill at the QB position that's been needed for years. But at this point, I can't: a ) Root against our current starting QB, as doing so would be wishing failure upon a season that's currently still under way (and winnable) and b ) Pin my hopes on a guy who hasn't played meaningful football in years If a) happens and we continue to lose, then I'll have no choice but to start looking towards b ). But until that time, I'll continue to root for the Mean Green that's on the field.

And now for some good news...Lance Dunbar

Kick returns and pass protection. I'm actually more concerned about the pass pro. With Tony running for his life, you could make a living there. That, more than anything else, is what's kept Flubber Felix on the team. -
Probably. But since he hasn't ever played in an FBS football game, I'd hesitate personally to make any claims as to his skill level. We've had a number of QBs that were faster than DT since Scott Hall, and how many games did they win? Also, anybody who says that DT does not possess an accurate deep ball is blessed with a short memory, and has forgotten much of last year (the Troy game comes to mind immediately), and must not have seen the perfect sideline pass he made 30 yards downfield to Chancellor, over two defenders, in the FAU game this year (of at least two perfect deep balls in the game).
-
How fast is Brock these days? And how many deep passes against FBS competition have you seen him throw recently?
-
With quarterbacks all over the world, yes. The third question answers the second. Also, no coach in their right mind is pulling a starting quarterback "just to see." He sees every day.
-
This. I think those clamoring for Brock are going to be somewhat disappointed next year. BUT, I'll say this: In the realm of college football, it's not unusual to use a QB such as Brock in special packages and game situations. If Brock wins the competition in Spring and Fall practice, he'll get the job... if not, unless he totally blows, I anticipate he'll get some playing time in games. The reason it doesn't make sense with Osborn is he's a similar athletic profile to Thompson. Brock does have the physical gifts to be a weapon. But he'll still have to prove it on the field.

This is really what I thought. We've had such inconsistency at the position over recent years that nobody has managed to accumulate these sort of numbers..

Attendance on national TV on the 15th..,

He's counting the roaches. -
Little column A, little column B. He can run no doubt (he was what, #15 dual-threat QB), but you don't see a whole lot of highlight films of kids facing top tier competition. It's always vids of their 600-yd performance against St. Vincent's School for the blind.

TXST correct acronym for Texas State
Monkeypox replied to Boko Dweller's topic in Mean Green Football
I know exactly what i'm talking about - TSUS is the Texas State University System, of which, Texas State University is a member, "flagship" or not. You'll note, that TSUS is not a system that includes Texas Southern or Tarleton State. It does, however, include Texas State. Somebody should tell them that the correct way to do it is TXSTUS. Until such time, plenty of people will refer to Texas State University, correctly, as TSU. And, as pointed out, TXST isn't even an acronym. It's an abbreviation, chosen arbitrarily. The system is using an acronym, a correct one, and one that you can expect people to use for the words Texas-State-University. Once again, you're clearly wrong, but I'm not sure what business you'd have in this discussion, since you've never once gotten our own acronym correct. And this is a dumb discussion, proven by your appearance in it. Nobody cares what TSU wants to be called. -
Just that bridge race.

More Evidence That...
Monkeypox replied to KRAM1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Ehhh, I'd say it's a smart policy. Unless you're using an outside entity to information gather from a person's social media, you're likely gaining access to protected class information, even if it's not private. Legally, you're not allowed to come upon age, race, gender, etc. in a search. If it's a question you can't ASK on a job form or in an interview, it's one you can't find the answers for online. What this means is you have to have a pretty complex search method and criteria, as well as concrete policies and procedures for how to handle the information. Anything less, and the company is open to lawsuits. I know a few companies farm this stuff out, because then they can adopt the criteria from a vendor who's software or search methods can parse out the information that you're not legally allowed to view. Otherwise, you can't have anybody involved in hiring actually do the searches, and then they'd have to record and separate the information. -
TXST correct acronym for Texas State
Monkeypox replied to Boko Dweller's topic in Mean Green Football
I agree. But what does that have to do with anything I said? I mean, who are you talking to? What examples of us trolling other boards and using incorrect acronyms do you have? I'm talking about the difference in it. If I'm inappropriately using an acronym, it's because 1) I don't know or 2) I don't care. And, as I pointed out, Texas State University System is TSUS. If they want people to use something different, they should probably start at home... especially before trolling a North Texas message board about it. -
TXST correct acronym for Texas State
Monkeypox replied to Boko Dweller's topic in Mean Green Football
Meh. There are two things that make it different. 1) I don't think anyone is going around the message board universe with the sole intent of correcting acronyms of North Texas. They get mad at articles and press pieces. If it occurs on a board, it's happening within some stupid smack talk thread, 2) TSU is actually a CORRECT acronym for Texas State University, whether or not it's the preferred one (otherwise, the system wouldn't use TSU themselves). BUT, North Texas State is not the name of our university, so NTSU is actually an INCORRECT acronym for our school. This isn't preference. This is factual. -
Cooper Jones could be a gamer. My left foot COULD be a gamer. That 5'3" cheerleader COULD be a gamer. Maybe we should give them all a shot, as long as there's arbitrary qualifiers for inclusion. At this point, you still have a chance to win a decent number of games. The coaches appear loathe (wisely so) to create more issues on offense than they already have by implementing a short leash on Thompson. He won the job last year. He won it again this year. Perhaps the "apparent" lack of pressure to be pulled is that the coaches know what they have behind Thompson. After all, they've seen the kids every day.
-
[ It will be the best player, but the best player according to coaches, not the best player according to people on a message board. Berglund is going to have to EARN the job, just like anyone else.
-
Really just gotta hope somebody steps up, or that Berglund is the real deal. I still don't see a way that you bench an incumbent starter unless he really stinks it up this year. Leadership matters, and, according to Mac, it's been a big reason why Thompson is the guy. And for every Houston or Troy or Texas Southern game Thompson has, he still has one like FAU or Kansas State. I'm still very unsure about the position as a whole.
-
I'm telling you that what you're whining about is another player of marginal talent level who can't win the job in practice. I don't hear anyone clamoring for Cooper Jones (who was ranked every bit as high as Osborn... higher when you consider he was coming out of high school), but the team moved him to TE. Osborn is not the second coming because of a few meaningless garbage time possessions. Thompson was better in the Alabama game. He had a higher completion percentage, higher ypa, and a longer drive... all against first teamers. So I'm tired of hearing that Osborn's 2-6 against backups in garbage time in a blowout is somehow indicative that he's a "gamer." And finally, kickers aren't QBs.
-
Yep, us, Tennessee-Martin, and Murray State.
-
If he can't win the competition in practice, he's not going to win it when it matters. For all the grousing about Osborn, you'd think he'd be able to show the coaches something by now. This isn't pro sports, and Osborn isn't an elite talent. That's about the only situation you can be in where you don't have to win it in practice, despite all this talk about a 2* backup QB being a gamer based on limited garbage time stats.

Someone should alert the Texas State University System - TSUS. http://www.tsus.edu/ And don't feed the trolls. -
He was 2-6 passing for 21 yards. And he had 3 series. 3-and-out, 3-and-out, then they fumbled us the ball on their own 43 yard line. He did complete 2 3rd down passes on that last drive. We were down 41-0 at the time.

I believe coaches generally go with the QB they feel gives them the best chance to win. Putting in players "just to see what they can do" isn't something that any professional coach would do. I have said for several years that I'm not sure we have an appropriate FBS caliber QB on our roster, and I will maintain that stance, based upon the fact that the coaching staff believe that DT is the best we have. Also, I don't remember a whole lot of concerns about Thompson's abilities until this year. I think it really comes down to a case of everyone loving a backup. No doubt, he hasn't been good this year, but I think the reluctance of the coaching staff to go with anyone else is more of an indictment of the other QBs on the roster than some kind of unwavering support of Thompson. I will never look at some QB's garbage time stats and think that's a good reason to believe he's a "gamer." We don't need someone who can dink and dunk once we're down half a hundred and the other team puts in their backups and has them in a prevent. We need someone who can come out hot, extend drives, make plays, and maintain that for 4 quarters. Sadly, if we don't have that on our roster, it's because we haven't recruited it. Our only hope at this time is that Thompson dramatically improves or Berglund is secretly that kind of player.
