  1. That's an "A" right there. You would've gotten an "A+" if you'd managed to get "bare cupboard" in there or any reference to how tough of a situation it is to coach at North Texas.
  2. Worst school massacre in US history didn't have a single shot fired. I think there need to be tighter regulations on guns, but people calling for a lot of bans and spreading a lot of misinformation about what's legal and available in the first place. And once again, both sides are having emotionally-driven responses to a complex issue. Repubs - nobody's taking away your ability to be safe or fight some kind of future government tyranny. They can't and won't. Besides, you ALL know that you've got a cousin in East Texas who can make a machine gun out of bike parts, but won't take the time to fix the hole in the floor of the bathroom in his trailer (I know I do). Dems - You won't stop people going crazy and murdering people. You could take away ALL the guns in the world (actually you couldn't, and for more amendments than just the 2nd), and massacres like this will still happen, and with the kind of increasing frequency they already are. Anybody with a plan and a willingness to die can kill any number of people.
  3. Moments mean lives, and the shooting wasn't over with when he distracted and drew fire from Harris. I've got the book, but I also have a family with extensive experience in military and police work, and also dealt with two individual shootings and a drive by at my own high school before transferring out. And one thing that the book demonstrates is that any desire to "deter" people from these acts is a fool's errand. Response options are the best you'll do.
  4. No, he did, actually. He drew attention and fire from Harris, causing Harris' gun to jam and helped conceal, care for, and instruct wounded students. Anybody with military/police/first responder experience can tell you the value in these things.
  5. Yeah, but that guard saved lives. I thought that was the big deal in all this. You can't deter someone willing to die. 12 people died in Columbine. Many more would've died if not for the actions of the armed guard.
  6. And the perpetrators at Columbine also used bombs.
  7. Still sounds like a waste of time and money to train teachers at something you already have trained people available for. Also, as I pointed out before, I'm too concerned about the ability of teachers to actually TEACH. I'd rather they receive the equivalent significant training hours spent on honing their craft.
  8. Weird, I thought a dumbass with a gun got someone shot. It's like there aren't any murders in states without Stand Your Ground laws.
  9. It would be more appropriate, IMO, to just have trained security/police there. The job of our teachers is to educate children, not to prepare for assaults on schools, and I don't trust the full measure of them to THAT task. That said, there IS training for students and teachers out there in how to respond to these type of assaults. One company I know of specifically was started here locally and has provided training to a number of schools/universities/businesses around the country. This sort of training ought to be as necessary as fire drills/tornado drills/etc. Most people simply have no plan on how to respond in these events. Then again... no one is really concerned about that aspect of it.
  10. He's referring to OU taking a JUCO DT right after offering Walker.
  11. Considering that we don't have accurate heights and weights on our own roster, I doubt your quest from accuracy will be fruitful. EAC lists him as 6'3", 238lbs. http://www.eacmonsters.com/Profile.asp?Team=football&RosterAutoID=1461
  12. Good highlights, 3* prospect, a LOT of good offers out of high school, and Hawaii and Ole Miss were on him last year. Needed a pass rushing end to replace a leaving starter. Good pickup here.
  13. Mac is working to replace some good starting players that are leaving. Since we're not a program with the roster depth that the big programs have that have been built through years of good recruiting, replacing these players in one of your most important units was DEFINITELY a pressing need. As I said, they're replacing two starters on that line. I don't want them to neglect one aspect of recruiting because they have pressing needs elsewhere. You get 25 scholarships, and it's not like Mac and Co. are unaware of their roster needs or aren't attempting to fill them. It's not like they aren't TRYING to get offensive play-makers and defensive linemen. Furthermore, our biggest offensive playmakers are coming back (unlike those two offensive linemen). Also, unlike linemen, offensive playmakers can make more of an immediate impact as freshmen/RS freshmen. Linemen at our level need time to put on weight/strength (something Mac has been complaining about for 2 years). I'm nervous about DL and offensive playmakers as well, but that has nothing to do with these JUCOs.
  14. Losing the starting C and an OT. Mac signs a JUCO OT and C. People throw fits. This isn't about Mac's recruiting classes. It's about those BEFORE that and the lack of relative depth. It's about experience and size along the lines. It's about competition.
  15. Absolutely on both counts. Depth and stamina are ALWAYS issues in the trenches. He wants to beat our opponents down physically, and you'll need the bodies for that. And also what I think you're seeing is a desire from Mac for more competition - from the weight room to the class room to the film room to the games. Just because some guy had a decent year last year doesn't mean he can sit back and count on starting the next. Always compete.
  16. While I would like more in the defensive front, I'm not about to get upset over mass recruiting of linemen on either side of the ball. Linemen linemen linemen linemen linemen linemen linemen.
  17. Elvis is a Boras client, and MI is one of their strongest positions in the minor leagues. That generally doesn't lead to an early, 10-yr deal.
  18. The victim's family requested that they support Brent and wanted him on the sidelines. I certainly wouldn't... but I can't be offended by the wishes of the VICTIM'S family. That's the message that I think some people are missing. If you have a problem with it, take it up with the VICTIM'S FAMILY. That is not something to get confused with a criminal trial or some kind of societal statement. If this were a member of MY family, you can bet I wouldn't want this guy seeing the light of day.
  19. It's been reported in a couple of articles that the shooter was a parent, but like almost every bit of information in these early reports, it's not been verified. I'm willing to bet they've even removed it from a few of them. "Journalistic integrity," don'tcha know.
  20. I noticed that as well, but yes, hopefully coaching can correct it. Makes good reads though.
  21. If that's the case, though (and I'm not arguing that it isn't), then the idea that "Mac just has to get his guys" seems a little far-fetched. Following this logic: We can't win until Mac gets his recruits in here. We can't recruit better because we haven't won in forever.
  22. They actually beat out the Big 12 on kids, even back then. Not your Texas or OU types, but a lot of Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri types. TCU did it with more 3 and 4 star recruits than people think, and even a lot of their 2-stars, while "unheralded," had offers from other D1 programs.
  23. I watched our defense this year. Sure, teams didn't have to pull out all stops to beat us, because we couldn't score a lot of points. But we couldn't even run appropriate nickel and dime packages with personnel, and our defensive line is lacking in depth and quality. All that MORE SCORING would have brought us is back to the Dodge days. We would've lost more games 61-47 instead of 41-27.
  24. Agreed. The issue with Mack isn't recruiting. The issue has always been development. He recruited Simms and Young, but he didn't develop them. If you're a self-motivated, football-smart type kid, you'll be fine. Otherwise...
