Here Is What Recruiting Success Would Look Like
Monkeypox replied to MeanGreenMailbox aka TFLF's topic in Mean Green Football
Agree. I definitely think there's room to criticize Fine. The problem is that not a single individual offensive unit (well, maybe RBs) performed adequately. We did not have good QB play (from either QB) last year. We also didn't have good OL play or good WR play. It makes it incredibly difficult to parse just HOW bad any individual was. Last year, we could assign them all excuses... True Freshman, New System, Whatever... doesn't matter, it's over. This year, those excuses die. Players and coaches need to get it done. Recruiting success will be increasing, consistently, our level from 90-120ish into somewhere in the 70s-80s in ranking. And that's not a huge jump individually, but it will make a difference. Doesn't have to be linear. Doesn't have to be perfect. You do that, and with good coaching, you'll put up wins at this level. You do THAT, and then you can make the next jump up in recruiting. Rinse and repeat... and then don't risk it by covering up a bunch of crimes. -

The American declares itself a "Power 6"
Monkeypox replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Football
SO what'd I miss? I was out getting my North Texas Mean Green 2016-2017 College Football National Championship Ring engraved, since I was the starting QB/S/KR/PR/PK for our record-shattering team this past season. That's how you do delusions, folks. Delude bigly. Power 6? WTF is that? That's setting your crazy-bar way too low. UNT - Power 1 Football Program since 10000 BC. -
DRC: Could 2018 be the year UNT has a player drafted?
Monkeypox replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm gonna say no. A far far outside shot for McClain, but compare him to Xavier Woods, who was a 3-time First Team All-Conference player and tallied 6 career FF and 14 INTs. Woods was taken in the 6th round. A lot of premier athletes from major programs end up UDFA. Our guys will have to check a LOT of boxes to get their shots. -
He wasn't even at FB when he came out of school. The Cowboys had him tryout, signed him as a rookie, and moved him there. They liked him a lot and he had a great pre-season, but he got waived and signed w the practice squad so they could keep another RB (Tanner?). Maybe halfway through the season, the Raiders ran low on RBs (McFragile, you know), and they signed him. He made his bones on ST and over time got more and more looks. And they kept him. UDFA, special teams, hard work. That will be the common thread for most of our guys to make it in the NFL.

CUSA and Sunbelt Merger About to Happen Folks

Paper? Like what fer da terlet? -
Same as it ever was. If there's not a QB on the roster that, even at this point, appears to be lights out, head and shoulders better than the rest, then we're in very familiar territory.

Is it time to drop "North Texas" and become UNT?

Dickey's Spring practices were held in the dead of night under the cover of darkness in the catacombs beneath the Super Pit. Members of coaching staffs would be cloaked, assigned a code name of 32 random characters, blindfolded, and led through a series of tunnels to the Matt Simon Viewing Facility. Here they would be sequestered into individual viewing rooms. For every golden Rod Rust coin they put into the slot, they could watch 15 minutes of Spring practice. Stealth Spring Practices.

Pretty soon we'll be able to bitch about not getting the sons of guys we bitched about not getting on this forum.

Getting in with players early is a GOOD thing, especially for a school like us.

He must not fit The System™

No, YOU missed the point. Hitting on a '10 class every year isn't a thing that happens. Hitting on a bottom 10 recruiting class happens every once in a while, especially if what you're looking for is a single decent season. It's not like the '10 class only played one year. The POINT is that what you want to be done isn't a thing. Seth's going to HAVE to hit on 2 low-rated recruiting classes, but if he doesn't recruit better soon, we'll continue to be what we are. Find me someone who recruits consistently in the bottom 20 and wins a bunch of games.

Wait... where are you finding ANY ranking of ours higher than Holliday's at Marshall? 2008 Marshall (pre-Holliday) #4 CUSA, #68 nation 2009 Marshall (pre-Holliday): #8 CUSA, #86 Nation 2010 Marshall: #2 CUSA, #77 nation 2011 Marshall: #1 CUSA, #60 nation 2012 Marshall: #3 CUSA, #77 nation 2013 Marshall: #1 CUSA, #57 nation .......... 2014 UNT (pre-Littrell): #9 CUSA, #102 nation 2015 UNT(pre-Littrell): #6 CUSA, #95 nation 2016 UNT: #9 CUSA, #102 nation 2017 UNT: #11 CUSA, #114 nation ............ And since you brought them up: 2007 Baylor (pre-Briles): #12 Big12, #77 nation 2008 Baylor: #9 Big12, #55 nation 2009 Baylor: #10 Big12, #52 nation 2010 Baylor: #8 Big12, #40 nation Briles immediately improved the recruiting enough at Baylor to get them competitive, maintaining classes around top 50. The next few years he had top 3 classes in the Big 12 and nationally ranking just outside the top 25 (the cost of course, is a whole other matter). So no... It doesn't look anything like those other programs. We recruit significantly below the level they did even before the coaching changes, and have received no bump in recruiting from a new staff.

Daaaaaaaammn. Can't say I'm the least bit surprised, but still...

One 9-win season surrounding years of losing seasons doesn't do anything for me. That's the problem. One bad class, ONE bad season, ONE good season... It's not about that. If you can't recruit well, you have to rely on finding diamonds in the rough. Since all we do is dig in the rough... of course we'll find diamonds every now and then. But if you consistently can recruit, you can consistently win. Doesn't mean you WILL, but you can. If you CAN'T consistently recruit , you CAN NOT consistently win. Winning 9 games one time doesn't mean what you're doing is working. If it did, McCarney would still be here.

247 Final 2017 C-USA Recruiting Rankings
Monkeypox replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
So did you take the 4-star QB recruit off Marshall's last year and add him onto this year's since you did that to Hoston for ours? -
'17 WR/CB Justin Cain (Woodrow Wilson HS)
Monkeypox replied to AustinFromUNT's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Unless those "random opinions" are the cumulative evaluations of all FBS coaches + more tape. I always like the tape we get on kids. But I'm not a professional coach. The guys who extend the scholarships are. When the guys we offer, depite their tape and production, don't get a lot of scholarship offers from those FBS coaches, that says a lot more than an 8 minute highlight reel. And it says a LOT more than a non-professional's opinion on a message board, just because they think they're the only ones who see what they see in a highlight reel. Our 1-11 team had a highlight reel. -
247 Final 2017 C-USA Recruiting Rankings
Monkeypox replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
There's no math to doubt. Just a guy on a message board. 116th in the nation. 12th in CUSA. That's the math that actually exists. You should also note that Jenkins and Hoston WERE counted on last year's recruiting class (our 9th ranked one). So are you removing them from there to do so? -
247 Final 2017 C-USA Recruiting Rankings
Monkeypox replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I don't see any math, player names, or numbers to verify that. And 7th or 8th would still put us where we usually are. It's bad. And that's with your questionable favorable math. -
The consequences are that we'll continue to be what we are in football... might get an occasional winning season with a ton of seniors, but overall... suck.

247 Final 2017 C-USA Recruiting Rankings
Monkeypox replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I'm not the one trying to make up my own system. I can just stick with 247's 116th and 12th in CUSA. Until I'm shown otherwise, that's where we are. And to adjust those rankings accurately, you have to do it for everyone in FBS.
