Mean Green Scores A Season-High 90 Points In Victory Courtesy: University of North Texas Release: 12/20/2005 Courtesy: Rick Yeatts DENTON (12/20/05) – The North Texas women’s basketball team returned to winning ways with a 90-59 victory against UC-Irvine on Tuesday night in the Super Pit. The Mean Green (8-2) responded with a high-tempo offense after Texas snapped its five-game winning streak on Sunday night. NT took the advantage, 4-3, in the series against the Anteaters (1-8) and improved to 6-0 at home for the third time in eight seasons. “I was very pleased with the way we came out and played the first and second half,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “We needed to get back on track offensively, and we were able to do that tonight. I was very proud of the way Mian and Mia played this evening. We really played well defensively and were able to create a lot of turnovers." The team scored a season high in points, tallying the most points scored in a game since 2003 against Denver. North Texas scored 90 points for the 17th time in 17 years in the Tina Slinker era. The 31-point margin was the largest since an 82-54 win against Alcorn State in 2002. Senior guard Mian Williams led three players in double figures with 15 points, including 12 in the first half. Senior guard Erika Bobo posted 10 points and led the team with seven rebounds. “Texas showed us we need to play 40 minutes,” said Mian Williams. “We just tried to play 40 minutes strong tonight.” The Mean Green jumped out to a 10-0 lead with four of the five starters contributing to the score. NT continued to extend the lead to 17 points, 24-7, in the first half, finding the post players and running the court in transition. Junior Mia Ajekwu contributed 12 points, while Amber Jackson recorded nine tallies. The team shot a season-high 46.3 percent from field-goal range. The Mean Green started the second half with a 15-5 run and increased its advantage to as many as 34 points, 86-52, with 2:32 left in the game. North Texas returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 22 when it faces Prairie View A&M at 6 pm.

Men's basketball: UNT set for tough test vs. Angelo St. 07:59 AM CST on Monday, December 19, 2005 By Brett Vito / Staff Writer On the surface, North Texas’ game today against Angelo State looks like a mismatch stacked in the Mean Green’s favor. UNT plays in Division I, one step above the Division II Lone Star Conference where Angelo State resides. Throw in the fact that the Mean Green are playing at home and it appears as if UNT should coast to a win at the Super Pit. UNT’s coaches and players are convinced beating the Rams won’t be as easy as it sounds. “Angelo State is a lot better than advertised,” UNT coach Johnny Jones said. “They only lost to UT-San Antonio by three and have transfers from Southern Miss and some California junior colleges.” Those transfers have helped ASU run out to a 7-3 start. One of the Rams losses came when they failed to complete a furious second-half comeback against UT-San Antonio. ASU outscored UTSA 46-39 in the second half, but fell short in its attempt to knock off a Division I opponent by an 81-78 score. Quinn Barfield, a 6-4 guard, has helped spark ASU’s quick start by averaging 19.3 points a game. The Rams also feature a pair of highly regarded transfers in senior forward Ronald Pittman (Southern Miss) and junior guard Turner Phillips (Baylor). “Any team with a lot of transfers and a good coaching staff will be a challenge,” UNT junior guard Calvin Watson said. “You can’t ever go into a game underestimating your opponent.” That is especially true for UNT in a game the Mean Green see as a potential turning point early on in the season. The Mean Green improved to 3-3 with a win over Nicholls State on Dec. 10 and can win back-to-back games for the first time this season with a victory over ASU. “It helps a team’s confidence to be over .500 and put some winning streaks together,” Jones said. “When you do that, you develop a different attitude.” Jones would like to see his team’s confidence continue to develop before the Mean Green face their biggest challenge of the season thus far on Dec. 23 when they host Houston. The Cougars are ranked No. 25 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 Poll. “We want to build some momentum going into Houston,” Watson said. “We know that both Houston and Angelo State will be tough games.” UNT appeared as if it was building toward its game against the Cougars on Dec. 10, when the Mean Green hammered Nicholls State, 98-82, in perhaps their most complete performance of the season. The Mean Green improved to 3-0 at home behind 21 points from Kendrick Davis. The junior guard has scored at least 20 points in four straight games and leads UNT with an average of 18.2 points a game. Davis’ surge has helped the Mean Green win two of their last three games. The streak is one the Mean Green would like to build on heading into their game against Houston. “We have gotten a lot better defensively, are more patient on offense and have better chemistry now,” UNT senior point guard Isaac Hines said. “If we continue to do what we do best, we will be ready for Houston.” BRETT VITO can be reached at 940-566-6870. Longhorns Snap Mean Green's Five Game Winning Streak Courtesy: University of North Texas Release: 12/18/2005 AUSTIN, Tex. (12/18/05) – Texas forward Tiffany Jackson scored 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to power the 19th ranked Longhorns (5-3) past the North Texas (7-2) women’s basketball team 69-49 at the Frank Erwin Center. The loss ends the Mean Green’s five-game winning streak is only the second loss of the season for North Texas. “I thought that we played well but you can’t turn the ball over as many times as we did and beat a team like Texas,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “We showed that we can play with teams like this but we still need to make some more shots and be more consistent on the offensive end”. Texas used a 10-0 run to take a 17-6 lead midway through the first half. The Mean Green responded to slice the Longhorns lead to five points at 24-19 with four minutes in the first half. Texas held a seven point halftime lead at 32-25. The second half never saw the Longhorns lead get any higher than 14 points until the final five minutes of play. Texas closed the game on an 11-1 run fueled by Jackson who tied her career-high with 16 rebounds. Sophomore Talicia Sanders had her second straight game with 10 rebounds or more as she scored seven points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Freshman Sanetra Jackson and junior DiDi Wali led North Texas in scoring with eight points apiece. North Texas returns to action on Tuesday night with a game home game against UC-Irvine.

Those JUCO players who are elgible to transfer at mid term and enroll for the spring semester will sign LOI November 21. Those Juco players who are not elgible to transfer and will not graduate until May sign with the HS players in Feb. The rare HS player who graduates in December can go ahead and sign and enroll in a college and be elgible for spring training. -
of operations. I sure had my hopes up for a release today. At least one more possible JC recruit to visit in the next week.

I received a recorded telephone call this afternoon requesting that I purchase tickets for the UH game in the Ft. Worth Bowl this year. I'm sure it was made because I received my MBA from U of Houston a long, long time ago and they still have me on their alumni list, even though I haven't joined or contributed to UH and because I live in the DFW area...south of Arlington in Mansfield. Just another publicity effort to encourse their fans to go to their games. NT could take notice.
-
Brian Carlson is a TE doesn't play defense as far as I know. He will primarily be a blocker not a receiver but did catch 6 passes for 40 yards.
-
I talked with Eric Caper around 1:00 and he said he had received no information at that time. That doesn't mean letters of intent haven't been received...they may be waiting for one more who knows.

I thought there was a team "limit" of 105 players who could be on a team, but only 85 ships authorized.

Posted on Mon, Dec. 12, 2005 UNT has its way at end By JEFF WILSON Star-Telegram Staff Writer DENTON - North Texas' second-half rally Sunday against UT-El Paso had a little bit of everything -- good defense, good inside game and timely bench contributions. But the 60-58 victory wasn't secured until the Mean Green got a much-needed dose of luck. Miners forward Whitney Thornton's short jumper with two seconds left kissed off the glass and rimmed out, and UNT left the Super Pit with its seventh victory in eight games this season. "We got a little lucky, didn't we?" Mean Green coach Tina Slinker said. "For us to win without some of our key players starting off well, that says a lot about where we are." Senior guards Erika Bobo and Mian Williams were held to a combined 13 points by the Miners' 1-2-2 zone defense, but UNT's post players found success in the second half. Amber Jackson scored six of her team-high 12 points in the second half, and Talicia Sanders had eight points after halftime as the Mean Green rallied from a 30-24 deficit. Interior defense was also key. UTEP's two leading scorers, forwards Kasia Krezel and Izabela Piekarska, were held to only six points, 24 below their combined season averages. UNT (7-1) led 54-48 with 2:41 remaining and had several chances to ice the game from the free-throw line. Jackson, though, missed four of six free-throw attempts, including two with 12 seconds to play that gave UTEP a final chance. The Miners eventually worked the ball to Thornton on the left block, but the game's leading scorer (14 points) watched as her shot spun out. UTEP (3-4) closed the first half with a 13-2 run to take a 30-24 halftime lead. ONLINE: meangreensports.com UNT WOMEN 60 UT-EL PASO 58 IN THE KNOW breakdown Why North Texas won: The Mean Green took control inside in the second half. UNT had 24 of its 45 rebounds after halftime, and posts Talicia Sanders and Amber Jackson scored 14 of their combined 23 points in the final 20 minutes. Sanders added 13 rebounds. Why UT-El Paso lost: The Miners committed only 10 turnovers, but eight of them came in the second half and allowed North Texas to charge from six back to eight ahead with 2:41 remaining. Ten missed free throws also hurt. Notable Two freshmen contributed key points and minutes. Jo Hall scored only four points, but she was on the floor down the stretch. Sanetra Jackson had six points and was one of UNT's few perimeter threats. Up next: UNT at Texas, 2 p.m. Sunday

Women's basketball: UNT must solve UTEP pair from Poland 08:47 AM CST on Sunday, December 11, 2005 By Brett Vito / Staff Writer In college athletics, it isn’t all that unusual to have high school teammates continue their careers at the same university. The pair of players North Texas will face today when it takes on Texas-El Paso at the Super Pit is a little out of the norm, though. Kasia Krezel and Izabela Piekarska are unique not because they are impact players from the same high school, but because that school is located in Poland. Krezel, a 6-1 forward, leads the duo from SMS Sport High School with an average of 15.5 points a game. Piekarska, a 6-5 center, isn’t too far behind with an average of 14.3. The pair will start along UTEP’s front line and present a rather large stumbling block between the Mean Green and their goal of knocking off the Miners (3-3) and improving to 7-1 heading into a showdown with Texas on Dec. 18. UNT’s lone loss of the season thus far came against Boston College, a team that features a pair of 6-4 post players. “The girls asked me today who UTEP was like,” UNT head coach Tina Slinker said. “Boston College and SMU are good examples. They are starting to understand personnel and how to play certain types of teams and players better than they have in the past.” The progress UNT has made was most apparent between the Mean Green’s games against Boston College and SMU. UNT struggled to find a way to stop 6-2 forward Brooke Queenan and 6-4 forward Kathrin Ress in a 62-46 loss to the Eagles in the Mean Green’s third game of the season. UNT had a second chance to face a powerful front line when the Mean Green took on SMU and ran the Mustangs ragged in an 84-69 win. SMU’s interior players Sarah Davis and Janielle Dodds combined for 39 points, but the Mean Green out-rebounded the Mustangs 48-37 and used their size and quickness to run away with the win. The result is one the Mean Green would like to duplicate against Krezel and Piekarska. “We definitely want to run, get them tired and try to get them out of the game,” UNT guard DiDi Wali said. “SMU was a good example of how we want to play. Other teams may be bigger, but we are athletic and have to take advantage of that.” UNT has size, but its strength is the athleticism of its front line. The Mean Green have been successful using Mia Ajekwu, Talicia Sanders, Erica Howard and Amber Jackson in various combinations throughout the season. All four stand at least 6-2 and have the ability to get up and down the floor with a host of quick guards. UNT sees its athletic ability as a way to get past UTEP and head into a showdown with Texas on a five-game winning streak. “This is exactly where we wanted to be,” Wali said. “We have a chance to finish the pre-conference season with only one loss. Texas is a very worthy opponent. We want to go out there and give them a run for their money.” BRETT VITO can be reached at 940-566-6870. His e-mail address is bvito@dentonrc.com .

Ajekwu Scores Career High In Victory Courtesy: University of North Texas Release: 12/08/2005 Courtesy: Rick Yeatts DENTON (12/8/05) – Junior Mia Ajekwu scored a career-high 23 points to lead the North Texas women’s basketball team to a 73-55 victory against UT-Pan American on Thursday night in the Super Pit. The Mean Green won its fourth straight game; its first four-game winning streak since the 2001-02 season. North Texas (6-1) is now a perfect 4-0 against UTPA. Ajekwu came off the bench to score 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the field. She has scored in double figures the last three games. Amber Jackson joined her in double figures with 10 points and chipped in five rebounds. The Broncs held a brief lead, 7-6, at the start of the game before North Texas jumped out on a 26-7 run that gave the Mean Green a permanent double-digit lead. Senior Mian Williams capped the first-half run with a jumper, giving North Texas a 20-point lead, 36-16, with 3:40 left in the first half. The Mean Green extended its lead to as many as 19 points in the second half, aided by Ajekwu’s 18 points in the latter period. Senior Erika Bobo dished out a season-high seven assists in the game and recorded five steals along with nine points. Talicia Sanders led the team on the boards with eight. She scored the team’s first six points and added two free throws to finish with eight points. North Texas returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 11 when it faces UTEP at 2 pm in the Super Pit.
