  1. open scholarship. The 6-10 center from Alief Hasting did not qualify academically according to an article in the DMN. NT has been hoping he would be a partial qualifyer. Tough luck for NT.
  2. NORTH TEXAS Softball coach hired for inaugural team DENTON ? North Texas officially started its softball program Wednesday with the hiring of coach Stacey Segal. UNT will field a team in the fall of 2003 and begin competing in the Sun Belt Conference in the spring of 2004. Segal, who compiled a record of 136-49-1 in four seasons at Navarro College, played at Texas A&M from 1991-93. From 1994-96, she was the head coach at Northwood University, where she had a record of 71-40.
  3. I left out her record at Ryan...from the same DRC article. Latricia Trammell?s at Ryan 1999-00 ? 17-13 (6-4 in 7-4A). 2000-01 ? 25-9 (9-1 in 9-4A). 2001-02 ? 22-11 (9-1 in 9-4A). Total ? 64-33 (23-6).
  4. In the article where the asst mens coach at NT resigned to accept a position at Florida State...it stated Slinker expected to have a replacement within 10 day...state law requirement re employment offers. Now Trammell resigns. I would bet she is the new asst bb coach at NT. Seems to be a top notch coach based on her record. Trammell resigns as Ryan girls coach Athletic director to choose between Denton, Ryan assistants as replacement 08/13/2002 By Chuck Cox / Staff Writer Ryan girls head basketball coach Latricia Trammell resigned last Wednesday following a very successful three-year stint as head coach of the Lady Raiders that included three consecutive trips to the post-season, the program?s first playoff victory and its first trip to the regional finals. Latricia Trammell Trammell, the all-time winningest coach at Ryan with a 64-33 record, led the Lady Raiders to District 9-4A titles the last two seasons. Trammell did not return repeated phone calls requesting comment. Trammell?s replacement will be either Ryan assistant coach Janelle Dreiling or Denton assistant coach Monesha Allen, according to DISD athletic director Ken Purcell. He also said the district hopes to have a decision made by Wednesday. Dreiling came to Ryan in the off-season after serving as head coach at district rival Frisco. She decided to become an assistant coach to spend more time with her family and has requested that if she takes the head-coaching job she does so as an interim. Allen has been a coach in the district for several years. Trammell is a leading candidate for the assistant job at North Texas recently vacated by Scott Stoehr, who is leaving for a similar position at Florida State. "She?s a person I?ve always highly regarded," UNT coach Tina Slinker said, "and she?s being strongly considered for the position." "I?m tickled to death for her," Purcell said of Trammell. "I hired her three years ago and she?s done a great job for us, but I told her the other day her timing is terrible. "We?ve had two or three top-notch coaches call us about the job, but they couldn?t take the job because their current districts wouldn?t let them out of their contracts. Within 45 days of the beginning of school, school boards aren?t required to release coaches from their contracts." Purcell said if coaches leave without permission of the school board to take another job in that time span they would have their teaching certificated revoked by the Texas Education Agency. "If there is a coach that says their board will let them out of their contract, you?re kind of like, ?Whoa. What?s going on here?" Purcell said. "It?s really a Catch-22." Purcell also said there were a couple of college coaches interested in the job but neither was certified to teach in Texas. Jim Hardin coached the Ryan girls for the program?s first four years of existence. He was 53-67 and led Ryan to its first playoff berth in 1997-98. CHUCK COX can be reached at 940-381-9587.
  5. Stoehr leaves Lady Eagles after five seasons for Florida State 08/13/2002 By Tim MacMahon / Staff Writer After five seasons as an assistant for the North Texas women?s basketball team, Scott Stoehr is leaving for a similar position at Florida State University. During Stoehr?s tenure at UNT, the Lady Eagles recorded three of the four winningest seasons in the program?s history. UNT won a school-record 21 games last season and made its second consecutive appearance in the WNIT. "It?s kind of bittersweet leaving," said Stoehr, who worked primarily with the guards and was in charge of the team?s conditioning program. "I appreciate everything [head coach Tina Slinker] has allowed me to do here and really enjoyed my time here. I?m very proud of what we accomplished. "At the same time, it?s an opportunity that I just can?t pass up professionally." Slinker said she expects to fill the vacancy within 10 days, acknowledging that former Ryan girls coach Latricia Trammell will be strongly considered for the job. Slinker added that she was proud to place an assistant with a program in the prestigious Atlantic Coast Conference. "It says a lot for what the program has accomplished and what he has accomplished," Slinker said. "Scott was really an integral part of the turnaround here." TIM MACMAHON can be reached at 940-381-9572.
  6. Sam Byrd wound up with 8 pts and 8 rebounds and if I remember correctly blocked at least one shot , it did seem he stood around a lot. A solid performance from a big man.
  7. two points, but led the TX squad with 7 rebounds.
  8. to conference games we will play Indiana, Southwest Missouri and Tennessee Tech....I would presume away. We play TCU in Denton and SMU in Dallas. We also play Baylor...don't know whether it is at home or away. NT is trying to schedule one additional home game. All of a sudden no one wants to play NT anymore...whereas in scheduling last year everyone wanted to play us. I understand NT had an agreement to play Texas Tech last year and TT dropped the game.
