My reflection of the '90 NT vs SMU game...
DallasGreen replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
As I've said before ANYONE who uses NTSU instead of the correct name in place for nearing two decades, THE University of North Texas, is either: 1) VERY OLD or 2) EXTREMELY STUPID -
Yeah you are missing something--A REALITY CHECK. The first think I would do after an improbable win over UT is BUY SOME ICE SKATES FOR HELL WILL HAVE FROZEN OVER AND IT'S BOUND TO DO THE SAME UP HERE.
-
Thanks Baby Arm-- facts hurt those who are defending the undefendable. Your posts just proved the whole point of this thread and in their own words. To ALL the horse huggers on this board, I would say if you can't show up with a little NT Pride for this one you might have your pulse checked!! Some Miserable University vs. the grunts from UNT-- It's NOT just a football game it's ALL OUT WARFARE!!! By the way I do regret using the term "blue collar" at the beginning of this thread, I meant no disrespect to our students or successful alumni ( of which there are many--all self made individuals), and I feel the term was taken out of context by many. I was more referring to the great number of our students who are the first in their family to go to college, and their hard working parents who help them along the way to have that education and a better life. It is no secret that in excess of 70% of our students accept financial aid, just walk accross our campus and then take a trip to " Biff & Buffy's Home down on Mockingbird Lane" and tell me there is no difference. You and I chose UNT because the majority are real world people not the pompus, arrogant bunch that aren't even representative of their own City of Dallas, but they will always look down on others whom they feel are inferior to them ( by the way Quoner, I don't feel inferior no matter what your shrink has told you). There is one way to strike a blow for all those dissed by these "competitors" for SOOOO many years. KICK THE HORSES' AS_ES ON SEPTEMBER 9TH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
September 9th is more than an important FB game on the UNT OOC schedule!! It is a chance for the underprivileged to make their mark against the pampered, pompous, impowered few who thrive on the Hilltop in the HP/UP gold corridor. UNT is a diverse, blue collar, first generation university training students for careers. SMU is for the lavish society offspring of Dallasites to further their line by making the "contacts" that will usher them to the top of Dallas society. "Contacts" in the nature of former Governor Bill Clements, who once begged the NCAA to let the 'stangs continue payments to some players that had "contracted" with the athletic dept. by means of private annuities to play for SMU. The good governor did not do this as an aide to the likes of the infamous Pony Express ( probably the highest paid duo in NCAA history), he feared that those players would sue those who originated the annuities for ---breach of contract. "Contacts" like Sherwood Blount who would implement a system of pay for play so Ron Mier could give cash $$$ awards for such on the field accomplishments as most tackles, yards gained, highlight reel plays, etc. for each and every game. As D Magazine once proclaimed in this era "IF YOU WANT TO BE RICH AND POWERFUL IN DALLAS____YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE TO S. M. U." Is it any wonder that the "Death Penalty" was imposed when in the midst of an NCAA investigation a recruit from PA comes into the athletic dept. and inquires what they are going to do since he had just wrecked the brand new car that every boy needed to get around campus? Come on Folks these people desrved no mercy-- they flaunted their money and power and they got EXACTLY WHAT THEY DESERVED!!! The cheating may now be better hidden or even severly limited, but the attitude of arrogance is alive and well. Make no doubt about it. In the immortal words of the legendary Lawrence Perkins as quoted in the 1990 NT Daily " At SMU we love North Texas Grads, as we feel they make some of the best domestic help in all of Highland Park" At NT on the other hand we fight for ever once of recognition in The Belo owned press, dominated by SMU ownership, which has now even acquired the hometown DRC. More than 70% of our students are on some type of financial aid, and it's certainly not from some affluent promoters or prominent family legacy. As a student, I would ask you wouldn't it be nice to take a swat at those who so look down on you and your university? As a player, I would ask isn't it a privilege for you to defend the honor of the working class families that send their kids to UNT to pursue careers after graduation not just for the "contacts" that will help them buy their way up the corporate ladder? As coaches, I would ask don't you think that it is worth a supremely prepared game plan and use of the most talented personnel to give these players the opportunity to win against a greater funded, elitist institution? Finally as athletic administrators, I would ask isn't it worth an overtime effort to promote this game for what it is --A Battle of Class Warfare? UNT vs. SMU is more than a FB game-- when Sept. 9th comes-- It should be all out warfare, not just another ho-hum OOC game. DEMAND THIS ATTITUDE FROM YOUR ATHLETIC DEPT. AND STUDENTS__OUR PLAYERS WILL GET THE MESSAGE AND MAYBE EVEN OUR COACHES TOO!!! KICK THE HORSES' REARS!!!

Silver. Saw FFR @ Tarrant Co. NTE @ Ft. Worth Cats last night. All who came had a great time as Cats kicked the snot out of St. Paul Saints.

Haven't you heard that Flannigan has directed his knowledge ( overstatement of this century since he was a career student at Some Miserable University) toward the prize fighting ring to prepare to sparr with NT fans much like he showed in 2005. God help our offense if we're depending on Ramon's " knowledge" to bail us out!!!
-
Since it's been decades since we've been NTSU you have to be very OLD or very STUPID to refer to us by that name. When people try to use it around me I tell them I don't know who they are referring to since there is no school by that name. It usually frustrates the hell out of them.
-
Don't blame you for looking forward to playing a team that went 2-9 in 2005 and finished last in the worst D-1 conference in the nation. Your comment further amplifies the snobbish attitude that the metroplex privates have always displayed toward NT, the largest and most academically prestigious university in the region. You are fortunate that our coaches and athletic staff don't give a rat's a_s about ANY non- SBC game. You won't be facing a Corky Nelson or Hayden Fry who would have their teams prepared to cut off your pony ears and stuff them down your arrogant throats!!! After all DD & Flannigan are your own boys just as is Chancellor Lee Jackson. WE have been infiltrated from within by the enemy. As far this Alum I don't plan to be able to talk for a week after this game. I've even offerred to suit up just to take a smack at one of your arrogant horse's as_es!!!
-
I just think we all remember a grossly underfunded, no facility, little A D program that still managed to instill pride in the players when they played OOC games. They even talked with and appreciated the students and fans. Maybe we just got spoiled to coaches who weren't afraid to commnicate !!!
-
First verse of UT fight song " TexasFight, TexasFight--it's good bye to A & M" I agree that SMU is not a rivalry for NT--IT'S AN ALL OUT NO HOLDS BARRED WAR!!!!!!!!!
-
Our present players should be told the stories of the great teams of the past that were snubbed by the metroplex media because of the metroplex privates who continued to live in their glory of decades before. We have many "horse huggers" on this board who won't either admit or else do not realize the grief that these horse's as__s have inflicted on our program over the years. Since DD and RV come from other than NT backgrounds they can't or won't make this known to current players. You could all help to provide just that little inspiration to the players to give them the edge to kick some pony butt!!! I truly believe the fans and students can be the difference in this game, and a team playing duly inspired can whip one that has superior talent if they are just not at an unattainable level like UT will be. We can't say we had better talent than #18 SDSU or the University of Tennessee, but we won those games because our team wanted them more!!! As the legendary Arthur Perkins, SMU alum, wrote in 1990 " At SMU we love NT grads. We feel they produce some of the best domestic help in all Highland Park." THE ATTITUDE has not changed since, but our team may not know that, and it's up to us to make them aware of the past.
-
Why were fans/students allowed on the field around the end zone? I have never seen thay at any UT game before or since. I was in Dr. Hurley's box for the second half of that game, and when NTSU went up by 9 points in the 3rd quarter you could actually see sweat popping out on the UT president's brow in the box next door

Contact your local chapter officers, but the telecast here is regional on Fox Sports Southwest so you would have to get it via satellite. Let Barbara Sanders, Director of Chapter Development, know if someone there has the capability to pull the game in on FSSW, and she'll see chapter members are notified. Contact bsanders@unt.edu.
