The rest of C-USA had better look over their shoulder 'cause the 'stangs have the leadership and the $$$ to fund a D-1 program and are closing the gap quickly. By the time we play them in 2014, we will be 1-AA or worse the way we fund athletics with a $3. student use fee!!!

Bataille Imposes New Requirement For P C
DallasGreen replied to DallasGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
This was instituted by Dr. Hurley more than 20 years ago, but he only asked that half of the P. C. donation be designated to his discretionary fund. When Dr. Pohl's administration began he stated all donations were appreciated, would count toward P.C. in full, and that the donor's wishes would be honored. It has been that way since until now. This is not new only much more controlling than it ever was before. P. C. under Dr. Pohl was an institution showing graditude to major donors, and its program showcased NT's brightest students and most successful supporters. Now just a social event that costs double the price of admission to such as the Ft. Worth Zoo and King Tut, this is further evidence that the meaning intended by Dr. Pohl has been totally lost. As a side note I have heard that Dr. Pohl presently suffers from pancreatic cancer. May all our thoughts and prayers go out to he and his family--a truly great man and far and away the best President this university has ever known. -
Bataille Imposes New Requirement For P C
DallasGreen replied to DallasGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Bingo!! Same here. I hope others do the same and let it be known that they are going to a higher level in MGC with their "Discretionary" dollars now that Dr. B feels she knows better where she should apply your hard earned$$$ -
We now are asked to return to the days of Al Hurley when your hard earned money that you donated to help the part of the university that you felt benefitted from your donation the most was instead funneled to the pet projects of the faculty and students as designated by the President. You will still be able to contribute to MGC, COBA, Alumni, etc. it just won't count toward your being in the President's chosen few unless you give her complete discretion as to how your money is spent ( or at least $1,000. of it). Those of us who favor strong athletics, business leaders, and successful entreprenuers and professionals are asked to again subordinate our support to benefit the arts, humanities, culture and the other artsy items whose alumni do absolutley nothing that enhances the visability of the university. In the words of Boone Pickens I will give to what I feel best benefits the university--a strong, competitive athletic program. Secondly I will designate my money at my own discretion not at the discretion of the Pres because it's my damn money. Good luck with the President's Council as I will cease to be a member on June 1. I hope those who stay like being told that the President is the best judge as to how THEIR MONEY should be spent. We have been down this road before--oh for a real leader like Dr. Pohl again.

Sure winning cures all, I won't argue the obvious, but if you are a top 25 team would you rather come to Denton or DFW to play even when we were winning? I am saying if you get the chance for a marque game, play it where you get the most exposure. As long as the program is underfunded w/o a dedicated, competitive athletic fee and we have uninspired athletes that look for an exit rather than gutting it up and competing then the bunker mentality of staying in little d sells best. If you want to be all that you can be, you first fund it with a fee that can let you compete, schedule teams that draw both from the DFW area alumni base and the visitor's alumni base, and you play such games in a venue that gives maximum exposure which I assure you is not little d.

It is a proven that quality opponents want metroplex exposure, and they know they won't get it in Denton. The A.D. and others must come to the realization that at least one home game per year be played in the metroplex be it the Cotton Bowl, Jerry's World or any other venue that gives exposure that neither we nor our opponent can get in Denton. There is a reason that our largest crowd ever was at Texas Stadium. Look at the great Hayden Fry's schedules--he knew that the program could not thrive with Denton alone--SMU, Miss State, OK State, U of H were games he lured to Texas Stadium that would not have given a game in Denton even a consideration. Metroplex exposure is the only way this program can grow and prosper.

Unt Hotel and Stadium Deal Announced!!!
DallasGreen replied to GreenAlums's topic in Mean Green Football
In the words of the chair of BOR last night no deal is done until it's signed and sealed. Still a waiting game in my view. -
Is there really hope that NT can win or are these changes just blowing more smoke??? Hopefully the past four years is not indicative of the future of NT FB. I truly hope Riley and Craig Roberson can be the leaders that inspire this team. In the past it seemed the fans cared more than the players. Coach Gandy what those not so special teams need is speed, discipline, and a kick in the butt. The speed they have to provide--you can handle the rest of it.

If as it states the fee increase will make us competitive--why was it not instituted NOW vs. being tied to the stadium? Perfect example of RV held hostage by Dr. B while she is held hostage by students/faculty. Why would you not want to give the athletic dept. the funding it so desperately needs as well as showing a committment from the university that can be used to rally alumni? Gutless move as it stands because it is too much of a long term affair 2011? 2015? never? Waiting only puts us closer to the SLC than Mt. West or CUSA and noncompetitive now in SBC. No AD can win with a $3. student service fee !!!! Again why do we fear these students? Where else can they go fee or not? Show some guts Dr. B-- show a real leader's committment to D-1 athletics. Oh for another leader like Dr. Pohl!!!

I realize state funds can't be used for athletics unless maybe you are a land grant school like the giants of Texas-- UT & T$M. However as a grad of UNT I pay state taxes by the bushel that go to support other programs at UNT. Other than sales tax these "poor" students pay no such tax, become do nothing for their alma mater alums, and feed like parasites getting the education and giving nothing back to the place that made them able to make an above average living. Call it a tax if you want to, but I call it progress to get a better caliber of student more representative of other state universities. I'm sick and tired of being that "little ole music school up in deadbeat Denton." The apathy and non-support have to stop here. These students voted for something that won't happen to them and will never happen if no "field of dreams" materializes--in other referendums the $$ to athletics began flowing the next semester. Look at UTSA--they are going D-1 NOW and talking to Larry Coker about leading the FB program!! Of course you need community support as well ---someday maybe even "DEADBEAT" Denton will as Obama would say "get it"
-
Don't worry she has always been subserviant to the will of students/faculty. That's why we only have a $10. fee that can't be collected until a "field of dreams" is built. Even though 1/2 of what 3 SLC schools are now collecting, and ours not even close to being collected, these "hippie wannabes" still bitch and moan. Why are our admins so afraid of the students? We need a dedicated athletic fee YESTERDAY. We are the ONLY state university that has to fund athletics out of a student services fee!! We are fast becoming non competitive in the SBC, and if Dr. B thinks you have ANY SHOT AT ALL at being a Tier 1 university in Texas w/o an athletic program she is blowing smoke. It may work at Cal Poly or Long Beach, but NEVER in the state of Texas. Put the fee in place and let them not let the door hit them in the butt as they exit!!! They'll never find the same quality of education for the price they are getting it anywhere, fee or not! If you want to give the image of a major player then think like one---do you think UT,T$M,TT give a damn if their students like a fee? Hell they just add it on as FEES w/o further explanation, and any protestors can leave if they don't like it. What do we have to fear so much from these third rate students that would probably improve the quality of student if they did leave?

Thanks for letting me know this is old news--what a fine paper that DMN almost as good as DRC!!!

Surprised I have seen nothing today on above development. Much was made of him in the fall until he broke the collar bone. Now he's not in school and facing felony credit card theft charges. Yet they still say he could be eligible this fall. At lot was made about DD getting outlaws in here, but with the crew that played the race card, Niwigwe's legal problems, scores of positive doping tests, the harshest academic penalty handed down by NCAA ( 5 FB & 1 BB ships lost), can you really contend that the present regime has players that are of any better character or more committed. It happens when you have four years like the last have been. Players wear thin and it gets old when you're already out of nearly every game by the end of the first quarter, a la, the exit of quality players like Dibrell and Vizza.
-
I certainly would not want to see NT play Baylor in the next two years with their QB. NT in the Big 12 is a ridiculous pipe dream initiated for hype. We are much closer to competing in the SLC at all athletic levels.
-
Saw something here that I have not seen at NT since the days of Scott Hall--The will to win and refuse to lose philosophy. Down 13-0 you still felt TCU was in the game due to ferocious hitting and a gutsy QB named Dalton. No finese or fancy exotic plays just in your face attitude that took them to victory against a talented, underrated, undefeated team. I only wish our team could ever return to the attitude shown by TCU and its coach. Even loses would be easier to take if you saw this kind of effort.

Dr. B wants $30 million put up by the alumni before dirt is turned in spite of the student vote. Bonds can't be floated in this economy, the City of Denton only wants to siphon off sales tax and hotel occupancy tax if and when the stadium comes, they show no support unlike Arlington and Jerry's World. The vote was great, but right now that's all we have and a damn sorry product on the field that won't encourage any donors to open their wallet. Dr. B continues to stick to her "sometime, some day" attitude toward funding the stadium. Yes she is playing politics with a controlling faculty, but o/s Norval Pohl what Pres. hasn't? And look what it got him in bucking the "tenured, uninterested, unmoved".

Pour House Game Watching Event for WKU This Saturday 3pm
DallasGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Is this for the channel 21 replay @ 10 or is the game live? -
Not since DD's firing of Chuck Mills has there been any semblence of a recruiting coordinator @ UNT.

This article pretty well sums it all up. We have to have players who have ablility and desire. Sometimes you have one without the other. Personally I'll take that burning desire to win in a not so athletically talented player. I've seen it proven true in David Kervin under Hayden Fry,Lester Harper under Corky Nelson, Greg Matthews under Dennis Parker, Mitch Maher under Matt Simon, Chris Hurd under DD, and Casey Fitzgerald under TD. I saw all the signs of a great receiver in Sam Dibrell, but failure to even attempt a tackle on interceptions right in front of him at ARK & SMU convinced me he had no heart for the game long before his quitter mentality finally surfaced to all.

If you know what deal ASU got, send it to the City of Denton. Arlington is seriously rolling the dice in tax support to the $1.2 billion, Jerry's World. It's time for "little d" to step up and show some community support for this stadium. Tax incentive funding as support for a major entertainment venue is common, and it reaps great returns to the city and county in hotel occpancy tax and sales tax. It is the seed money that will ultimately prove a good investment for the taxpayers, and we are asking a pitance compared to what Arlington has already done.

Special Announcement To The President's Club
DallasGreen replied to VideoEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
I agree that Dr. B is not anti-athletics, but I also believe she manipulates her statements to cover herself either way with a mostly apathetic but sometimes hostile anti-athletic portion of the faculty. Case in point at the Rice tailgate was a difference in the way RV approched the stadium issue and the subtle difference when she approached it. RV's address indicated it was ready to take off and we all need to get on board now. Dr. B's was we will have a stadium sometime someday. I can't blame her for being politically correct with the faculty she heads up, but never mistake her support for that given by Norval and Barbikay Pohl. Dr. B may get the glory from this, but make no mistake as to whom laid the groundwork for all of this. -
I have spoken with RV at the Cookout about smaller donations to the stadium. Development has a card specifically for athletic facilities donations. The reason that the card is not directly for the football stadium is that pledges for facilities can be used as collateral for a bond issue if one can be raised in the current tight money environment. RV assured me that all funds pledged to athletic department facilities would be used for the stadium, but the pledge can't be directly to the stadium if you want to help toward a bond issue as well. I would urge all who have connections to the City of Denton ( Joe Holland are you listening?) to urge the leaders to give some help from the city or county. The Barnett Shale has produced a windfall of property tax dollars for local government. This stadium will further boost sales tax and hotel occupancy tax revenue. DISD may be a separate entity but they put $15 million into a state of the art HS stadium that is never half filled. It's time UNT began calling in some markers as the largest employer in Denton. Revenue sharing of some small percentage of property tax revenue or even a quarter % sales tax increase are both reasonable requests of the city/ county. Use the city of Arlington's investment in Jerry's World as an example. Arlington knows that in time it will reap the benefits of its investment many times over by having Jerry's World in Arlington. Denton will on a smaller scale also find that this stadium will be a wise use of public funds for a project that will keep on benefitting the taxpayers of Denton city and county for many years to come.

The First Opponent In The New Stadium...
DallasGreen replied to BIG DAWG's topic in Mean Green Football
How about NMSU or even NM ? There have been some great games over the years with New Mexico State. I miss having them on our schedule since they left the Belt for the WAC. -
If this vote fails it may mean the end of our football program. Title IX works both ways. If football is dropped many women's sports will have to be eliminated for male gender equity. I can only hope that saner heads will prevail and that at the very least our athletic dept. can be funded to a level to give our athletes the opportunity to compete. A no vote says NT wishes to forever remain perceived as a large community college with no self worth. The quest for Tier 1 status will also be gone. It will be time for "Gutless Gretchen" to depart as well leaving behind an institution unable to take its rightful place as a leading university.
