DT has taken a lot of flack on this board. He is severely limited w/o Chancellor, our only playmaker at receiver. I remember one play in this game when he threw it perfectly for Delgado and the receiver gave up on the route which would have been a long touchdown if he keeps running. How quickly 25 of 28 against the #1 team in the nation is forgotten. DT doesn't play defense and there are plenty of fingers to be pointed on that side of the ball. DT may not be perfect but he is one helluva lot better than what is behind him. If anyone saw McNulty/ Osborne last year against Tulsa you know what I mean. Brock Berlund may be as great as everyone thinks, but I'm leary of anyone who has been around that many places in that short a time. As Coach Blakeley used to say people only go to JC because they are dumb or they are outlaws. At least w/ DT you get maximum effort and character albeit not always perfection.

One observation is instill some measure of FEAR in this team. Make it so tough in the next practice after a game like MUTS that the team is AFRAID to come out flat ever again. I knew a defensive player in the 80's who told me he literally dispised the defensive coordinator, but he played his guts out on every play because he FEARED incurring the wrath of same DC. Usually these are the type coaches that players come back to thank after they are alumni for not having led them down the easy path. In football more than any other sport the losses become easier to take with each consecutive loss and winners become more afraid that they might lose with each consecutive win, i.e., winning begets winning and losing begets losing. I will never accept that in the SBC that the talent level favors one team so much that an "inspired" conference foe can not compete against any other team in the league. This team was neither inspired or confident at MUTS or U of H. MT hit so much harder that it looked like UNT had substituted a middle school to make the trip. It was not just embarassing, it was shameful and humiliating. And don't start telling me about the BB team. I am a Texan by birth of three generations and FB is the ONLY sport that matters in TEXAS.

Announced Attendance at MUTS--14,102
DallasGreen replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
And when are these "winning seasons" coming? I'm really tired of excuses and rah rahs before the start of the season only to see ill prepared, undersized teams that seem beaten before they step on the field. The MTSU game was among the most pitiful in our football history. No wonder we got a lot of players hurt as we seemed dazed and confused at the start much like at Houston a few weeks before. -
San Antonio Express News article about fans not showing up to game
DallasGreen replied to STE's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't think their attendance is "pretty good". I think it's great. From what I've seen in two years at Apogee it would take a Notre Dame game to fill the place, and ND would have to furnish 2/3 of the fans -
Apparently the hundred students that showed up for last year's game didn't think it was very important either. After all they would have only witnessed what has been done five other times in NCAA history (Dunbar's records)
-
Agree throughly FFR, but I would add why do we keep recruiting DBs who are so short they can't reach the receiver's shoulders much less the ball. Also Zac Whitfield was suppossed to have great speed. Why hasn't he recovered when beaten anytime this year??

As Dandy Don once said if ifs and buts were candy and nuts we'd all have a Merry Christmas. Still doesn't address the success at ULM, UTSA, WKU and others who were in just as bad or worse shape a year ago, but don't have to endure three years of losses before they competed

If this is true it certainly does not bode well for 'Stangs.

Tell me one other school in Texas that puts BB first and I'll show you a school that has no respect. FB drives the bus in Texas the rest are just hitching a ride!!!!

I attended the KSU game. This is not even remotely the same team that played KSU. OLine was blowing KSU three yards off the line of scrimmage. Now virtually no run blocking. Not a quitter but this season is over--give everyone on the roster that might remotely help next year a shot at this point. D'ont tell me about BB starting. I am a FB fan first and this has been an extremely disappointing season.

Average Home Attendance SBC and CUSA

We did plenty of lying last year in the final game against MTSU. I bet less than 100 students showed up if you don't count the band. -
Heart of Dallas Kickoff Classic at Cotton Bowl
DallasGreen replied to EAGLE83's topic in Mean Green Football
RV is on record as saying this will never happen. Even before Apogee he asked Delois Dodds for a 2 for 1. The response was you want to get UT to play at Fouts Field??? The fact is T$M @ TX Stadium is still the biggest "home" draw in history and about doubles the next closest. There is a reason that a team that travels that well will never come to Denton, and we continue to ignore the potential exposure and fan base that a game like that can draw. -
TXST correct acronym for Texas State
DallasGreen replied to Boko Dweller's topic in Mean Green Football
The Texas State University SYSTEM includes several schools, Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin among them. The correct name is Texas State University @ San Marcos. The others mentioned could call themselves Texas State University @ Huntsville or @ Nacodoches if they chose. Actually if you notice every other "State" out there, these names were meant to denote agricultural schools with vet medicine ,ranching, and ag studies, i.e. Oklahoma State, New Mexico State, Kansas State, etc. In the 70's when North Texas approached the legislature about changing the name to Texas State ( as set out in the movie Necessary Roughness)we were told that the name was reserved for Texas A&M should they ever want to get in line with other state ag schools. IMHO San Marcos has stretched the truth when it says it is Texas State without adding @ San Macos to it. -

Just went to KSU game with him. He and his wife have really gone the extra mile in caring for their elderly parents in a family environment. I know that he is a great comfort to his father.

Will someone please tell the ESPN...

Two things with people who call us North Texas State---1) Very old 2) Very stupid Take your choice. -
How fast they forget-25 of 28 against the upper echelon of the Big 12. I agree with a previous poster that Berglund will never take a snap at UNT --just what we need another head case from juco ranks. I agree that Osborne may be due a shot but just go back to the Tulsa game last year if you want to see what a game with McNulty looks like and he had Dunbar to boot. If your special teams have failed you miserably in four games no QB is given any options. At least DT shoulders the blame for his mistakes. Also he does not bask in the glory of a good performance like KSU. Personally I'm glad for only 3 more home games (one on a Tues. night that will play to an empty stadium on national tv and the last to a start up that will have 5K or less announced at 18K).

Derek Thompson is the key to the season. I like our O line and receivers and feel we're fairly solid at running back. The move of the fast kid from Sherman to CB greatly helps the secondary. I feel 7-5 is a realistic possibility. Far from being atrocious I feel our depth at QB is an asset, McNulty & Osborne are both gamers.

Hudspeth Has Cajuns On Track For Gridiron Greatness
DallasGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Having attended last year's ULaLa game I can assure you that we were not overmatched even w/o DT, our best QB. We were still very much in the game in the early 4th quarter before the largest crowd in LaLa history. The lack of speed in our secondary became obvious as DBs who timed at 5.2 in the 40 in pro trials( Coach Mac at one of the caravans said he could outrun our DBs) could not keep up with faster ULL receivers. I do have to agree with KRAM that LaLa fans are the best in the SBC. I hope we can treat them to as great hospitality when they come here this year as they did us last year at their place. It was Cajun Fest and they all invited us to stay over and celebrate it with them. They even sent jumbalya to our tailgate.- 17 replies

Back in the day...Flashback 1977.....High hopes...
DallasGreen replied to Evan's topic in Mean Green Football
We were not just that strong in the late 70's but the late 60's as well. Corky Nelson absolutely amazed me in the eighties with his ability to have a I-AA team go toe to toe time and again with D-! teams. Victories over Rice, TT and very closes misses to OSU,UT, and KSU. You just have to wonder what Fry and/or Nelson could have done with today's resources at their disposal. -

DallasGreen replied to Evan's topic in Mean Green Football
You are definitely correct about SMU, TCU opposition, but I'm not so sure about Baylor. Fry was a Baylor alum and close to the BU AD at the time. Don't know for sure about Rice, but all the rest gave positive vibes. I even heard former TT AD Dewitt Weaver say that TT really thought NT would get the SWC bid that TT secured after the loss TT suffered in Fouts in the 50's. -
Hotel and Conference Center "Deal in the Works"
DallasGreen replied to UNTLifer's topic in Mean Green Football
Amen Brother this City had plenty of funds to throw at the A-train and the DISD at the building of C.H. Collins. Why not at something that has such great potential as this? Little "d" is brought into the real world of the metroplex though it may be kickin' and screamin'. -
New Map for College Football could include Everybody
DallasGreen replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Why not if high school teams play that many games to get to the state championship? Why would colleges be any different. Your pay for play reference has no relevance to this topic. I am sick of the media blitz in the DFW market for the pro teams, when all any of them care about is the $$$$$ and corrupt the minds of college athletes into thinking they should point all their eforts toward going pro rather than taking advantage of what a college education offers them. Think of Vince Young staying for his final season at UT vs. his failure by going pro early. Think if Colt McCoy would have gutted it up in the National Championship againsr AL instead of taking a dive to preserve his pro hopes where he has failed miserably.
