  1. The video Billy posted and the link to the medium article are key in understanding the point about removing the Eyes of Texas as a song. It is amazing that so many aspects of university life and traditions are really just fossilized pop culture of the 1920s. Marching bands, dancing girls, and minstrel songs were super popular in the first half of the 20th century and are only maintained in high schools and colleges. Its fine until you realize that means the problematic aspects of that popular culture is maintained. The answer is to create new ones. Think of how silly it is to still be singing the same song some students thought up in 1901 (in the case of Yale's Bola Boola). Most of these songs were just rewritten lyrics of popular songs. So if the students want to come up with new lyrics to Drake's new song and that becomes the school/fight/whatever song at UNT or UT or whatever that is the answer to this thing. (Ours was written in 1939 by Francis Stroup).

  3. The money thing is not what worries anyone the most. It's the controversial politics. Not even being a religious university -- there are plenty of those -- but the controversies and the president of the university firing off HSOs. Smastresk and Baker would be asked to comment about scandals here and there. That's not a headache anyone wants. Stuff like this https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/09/09/jerry-falwell-liberty-university-loans-227914 is dealt with by Falwell and co themselves. The teams that schedule them get a little flack but it ends fairly quickly. Going into business with them? That's another thing entirely.
  4. I wrote about this on CR a couple of days ago. I think moving is ridiculous, and the rationale doesn't make sense to me. I get that nearly every member program is "unhappy" but that is no reason to leap when we don't know what is on the other side. The writers repeating themselves saying "yeah they should merge" are never super familiar with either of the leagues and think of them as interchangeable. That is fine, for their entertaining HSOs, but not good analysis. There are few good answers. https://cusareport.com/2020/05/25/cusa-is-hanging-on-by-a-thread/
  5. Hey guys, you all know my love for all things UNT. You might not know that I am a huge Channing Tatum fan, as well. I figured that in these challenging times, where the man is trying to make us wear masks and everything, you might help me come up with a subforum here that reflects my twin passions: UNT and Channing Tatum. We'll take these suggestions to the mods and see what they think. Of course I chose the high poetry of anagram creation as our method of choice. Achtung NT Main! -- Doubles as a warning to the NT main campus. We should all be vigilant in these troublesome times. UNT Chat Naming -- Well, that is what this thread is about, isn't it? Ma UNT Thing Can -- Well, this one is a tad bit tawdry. I am blushing. A UNT Can Thing, M -- A nod to all our 007 fans! Also, The Tatum can totes play the role! An UNT Might Can -- A fun way to use the kid slang. Let's get the kids in here to see what all the fun is about! I'm "UNT CAN" Thang -- RU? GIANT UNT Can!, TM -- Strength in numbers! We'll get it trademarked! Woo! Or maybe we get a giant can for realz? No bad ideas! This is brainstorming! Ma, Can't. UNT nigh -- Let your mom know you can't even right now, you know? Because totes UNT!
  6. Got to bring them in, develop them, and then game plan to win. Wilson did the former, meh on the middle, awful on the latter.
  7. Nah. We absolutely should care what the Cowboys think because they are a pretty average NFL organization. You can go through the entire league. Which teams should we give this flying f uck about? I mean, that just strengthens my argument that getting an UDFA contract is the best thing for him because he has some control over his future. The Patriots are the gold standard but some of that is because the rest of the AFC East sucks and makes stupid decisions. But they get Draft picks, too, so we need to care about what those terrible organizations think about a player. The Giants suck, and also the Washington squad. The Bears, and Lions are laughable. The Packers have Aaron Rodgers and that has been holding them up for a while. The Vikings though the "You Like That" guy was the answer. The Bengals and Browns are jokes. The Ravens have their future and the Steelers have their rapis- guy. We could go on.
  8. Mason Fine was always going to be a long shot in the draft. His size is still an issue for everyone. UNT only failed him in that it couldn't get to bigger games against tougher competition where he could have more game tape against NFL talent. In the games against good and physical defenses, he struggled in the ways that concern the analysts: seeing the field, throwing under pressure, and making difficult throws (UAB, UTSA (with Davenport), Troy, Utah State, FAU). His best option was always getting a FA deal, and finding some place where there is a good culture of development. I mean, Kellen Moore had a bigger resume and more name recognition and also went undrafted.
  9. I didn’t write about it, but the start of the game NT benefited from Tech playing a high press. They broke it pretty easily and that led to easy, wide open looks from three. Also got some run-outs off steals.
  10. https://meangreennation.com/mbb-lets-talk-about-execution/ We wrote about the NT offensive struggles and what they can do to improve, or what they are simply doing poorly. There is a lot to like. Contrary to some opinions about how Mac runs things, they do a few things to get Zach some post touches but there is some limited ball handing on the perimeter that mean NT is foregoing solid opportunities for chucking it late. For further reference, when we talk about ball handling, we mean all aspects of it: dribbles, passing, catching it, etc.
  11. There is a bye-week. There is no press conference during a bye week. This is standard. As far as the podcast, we had a scheduling snafu, but we are looking at alternative times this week!
  12. Haha look at you reading my mind. I choose based on what I thought were some momentous occasions. Either big winning moments or just some gutsy throws. The Darden one was that I just like him throwing to Darden all the time. @golfingomez wins the mythical poster of the year trophy.
  13. 1. to Rico Bussey vs UTSA 2. to Rico Bussey vs USM in 2017 3. to Tee Goree vs Army 2016 4. to O'Keeran Rutherford vs Rice 2016 5. to Jaelon Darden 5.5 Turner Smiley 68-yarder vs Army 2017
  14. Fixed!
  15. What’s up creatures of the night. Links to MGN stuff. UTSA recap Podcast
  16. I got GA through the University Away option. I haven’t got any notice about how to get those tix so I’m guessing it is at Will Call?
  17. I am in Berkeley -- I am also staying at the Double Tree -- Marina.
  18. God forbid a forgettable restaurant is removed --- next you will tell me they plan to knock down some dusty old building that smells like arm pit to build a modern, maintainable one that is nicer to look at and has nice internet. The shame!
  19. Criticizing the teaser headline is one thing, using that as an example of an entire paper's coverage is another. I think the supporting criticism brought forth in this thread by the OP and others is woefully short of the claims put forth. Also, given the paper has to resort to reprinting the Sports Information-provided game story is evidenced that any bad coverage are likely mistakes borne of a tiny budget than any grudge or overt bias. Same deal with the Daily -- it is run by glorified amateurs learning on the job. If we expect Pulitzer-worthy stuff there that is our mistake.

  21. I wonder if NT switches back to IMG after this considering everything.
  22. The foundation of democracy is a well-informed public. The news media does try to perform that function but ultimately it is our responsibility to not be stupid and not fall in love with the sweet nothings whispered in our ear by opportunistic politicians, company presidents, or snake oil salesmen.
  23. I think it is silly to attack journalism as a whole for one failed piece by student journalists. It's like attacking the game of football as a whole because a senior QB throws a bad interception. This is one writer failing, and the paper's EIC that effed in making sure the whole piece was solid. Failure is part of learning. Does it suck? Yes. Is it reflective on journalism as a profession? That's a giant reach, and an entire standard deviation of an overreaction.
  24. While this is very true and obvious and known by all, I think we are forgetting the other factors. I don't see the draw for K-State. No one has won there not-named Bill Snyder, and it is a slog of a gig. Texas Tech, UNC, Louisville -- even right now with the crazy AD and the ridiculous lawsuits -- is a better gig. To me, battling Big 12 foes with half a deck and one hand behind your back is cool and all, but one more season with Mason Fine, a chance for a CUSA title, and SL can get a really good gig coming up next season. If he wins big next year, Lincoln Riley may move on to the NFL and _that_ dream gig could open up. Sure, it is possible to parley the KSU job to OU, but that's tougher. 5 is more than 2, which you were so helpful to point out, and I don't know SL personally so it could be so simple.
  25. This is why you get a good agent. This is what they do, get you your market worth and you can concentrate on the stuff you are good at. Seth Littrell very well may be out there recruiting hard for North Texas and his agent is out there recruiting organizations on his behalf. Agent comes back with a big offer -- "yo Seth, they offered X+1. We should get WB to give you a raise" SL: "sure" **gets raise**
