  3. I am listening to the First Round game of the tourney - UL and USA, link to listen if you are bored: http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/krvs/ppr...krvs-sports.m3u
  4. Well, that pretty much blows the trip. Thanks for the info Matt.
  5. this weekend, leave Friday after work and rush hour (around 7 or 8) drive through the night.. most likely back by Sunday night if we lose first round. If we win then we will be back early Monday morning (drive through the night after game) - get back around 5 a.m. Monday morning. If we somehow win the 2nd round game then you would need to take off for Monday. I would say those chances are very small.
  6. Thinking about doing the roadie to BG for the b-ball tourney. Should be 10 hours to get there. Leave Friday, drive through the night.. go to game... stay the night. If we win stay another night, if we lose drive back. If we win second game then stay for Championship game on Monday, if we lose, drive back Sunday night. Anyone else going? Want to split gas/hotel? I think I have someone to go but the more the merrier.
  7. While I agree with you, allowing them to stand up is just asking for trouble. Say your team makes a great play while they are standing behind the goal and it gets discounted because of a technical. Or if the other team has a fast break and gets to shoot an extra free throw because of a T and also gets the ball back. You just cannot leave "discretion" up to students, they will get caught up in the emotion of the game and an overzealous whistle happy ref will make you pay for it.. .could cost you the game. I went to a Big 12 game last Saturday and their cheerleaders are not even on the court during game play, they stay in the corner. The band however is a major factor. Maybe it is the sitting down that bothers you, having them stand up in the corner would probably be ok; but if they are standing up behind the goal and something big happens, a cheerleader will jump up and down and "cheer" by natural instinct... and if you get the wrong ref it can erase a basket or add onto the opponents basket. Some conferences might allow it; but the Belt doesn't... and I am guessing that the Big 12 doesn't either because I was watching the Baylor cheerleaders to see what they did during game time. I think we should be doing what the Mavericks do to get the crowd incolved - use those Mini-Trons as much as possible. It is up to the fans to get noise going when the clock is ticking, cheerleaders are limited to what they can do. We could probably push the enveolpe but I don't think that JJ or RV wants to risk handing over that type of thing because it just takes one bad apple to ruin it for everyone. And by bad apple, I mean a bad ref, not a bad cheerleader.
  8. I posted this below in another post but I thought I would make a topic for it to see if anyone else would like to see our band do this... I went to Waco and watched the Baylor-Mizzou game this last weekend and our crowds are every bit as big as theirs. One very cool thing that they have done is place their band in the corner behind the visitors bench. Whenever there was a timeout, the band would play a little song and then just blow away so that the players in the huddle could not hear what the coach was saying. I mean a constant horn blowing, no song at all, just a long screaming horn blowing until the timeout was over directed right at the Mizzou huddle. The Mizzou coach was PISSED, I mean PISSED; but there is no rule against how a band plays during a time out. The Mizzou team huddle cannot pass half court during timeouts for their huddles and they were warned several times for huddling over the half court line trying to get away from the horns and the noise being blown directly at them. I would LOVE to see that in the Pit. At least one good idea came out of Waco! Baylor almost won that game and when you take into consideration that Mizzou beat OU in Norman this year that is a pretty big deal. Their coach is for real, I think he will have Baylor turned around in a year or two. If he is doing this well with all those walk-ons, I would hate to see how they do when they get ship players in there.
  9. It is a conference rule Mini Aaron. We used to have cheerleaders stand behind the basket and make noise during free throws; the Belt got rid of that. We can get a technical for doing it and the refs have their own discretion as to what is interfering with the game. 10. Hey Deb, you know I love ya; I would never get mad at you. But to dogpile on the cheer squad when they are a volunteer group is just taking it too far. Where were all of those "spirited" band members during the non-paid games over the break? What about the one tv game from last year where the pep band didn't show up because they weren't being paid. That was last year, not in 1999. And Debbie, you told me that you were the exception when it comes tot he band. You told me that yourself just last summer. Is the band getting into the games more? Heck yeah! Why? Because we are winning. They were just as much into the games in 1994 when we were winning. It is not because there is some new philosophy being preached, it is because the band, like the whole student body, likes to cheer for a winner. So whether they are on scholarship, getting class credit for it, or being paid cold hard cash; most members of the band are getting "something" for being there. That is more than can be said for the cheerleaders. Even those non-music majors enroll in the class and get elective credits towards graduation. Part of getting your grade is showing up to stuff. If we had an all volunteer band, I bet it would be just as sporadic at the basketball games as it is with cheerleaders. In fact, it would probably be worse... well, in fact, it flat out is worse... they have shown that they simply will not show up at basketball games if they are not required to and not getting paid to be there. They have shown it this year, not in 1999. So let's cut the cheer squad some slack on the participation thing; but go after them on their everything else. I totally agree that they need to get a clue as to how to get the crowd into the game.
  11. Debbie, That is silly. If the band didn't require music majors to be in the marching band we would have a band the size of the pep band for football games. Along those lines, the pep band ONLY comes to the basketball games when they are PAID. On top of that many of them are on scholarship so they are essentially getting double paid. If our football team did not have an opportunity to compete on the field then why would they play, just to entertain us? Play scrimmages against one another? No, they play because they have the opportunity to play other teams and even get to play in a championship bowl game. The cheerleaners are a volunteer organization. They are not paid. The only things funded for them are their uniforms and their coach. They often have to pay to go to road games and are definitely not compensated for performing at basketball games the way that the band is. We should be fighting for more money for our cheerleaders so that we can ask more of them rather than complaining about what we have now. There is an old saying, you get what you pay for. Right now we are getting what we are paying for, a volunteer cheer squad with no scholarships at a Div I institution. The only reward that they have received in the past is the chance to compete and show off their hard work in a national competition and that was taken away from them this year due to switching organizations. Now, I do have complaints about the cheerleaders, don't get me wrong. It is impossible for me to believe that they cannot come up with a cheer that gets the crowd to chant in unison. A little bit of effort in working with the jumbotrons, the band, and the stadium/arena annoucners and we could have a signature crowd cheer within a year or even a few games. That effort never seems to be made and it flat out pisses me off. If the very best we can do is to hang out balloons to bang together than we are in bad shape. We should not have to rely on artificial noise makers alone for our crowd to become involved in the game. This is one area that the cheerleaders need desperately to address and it would not cost them a penny, just a little effort and time.
  12. Hmmmmm, this could be interesting. Let me know how this shakes out. I might be on board with a couple of gal pals.
  13. CO, I didn't mean to play down the past championships one bit, I hope I didn't do that. I had a good friend that was a cheerleader and another that used to work for me and both have told me the different positives of the two associations. Both of them did seem to have an inferiority of the other league but those were just two guys out of the hundreds that have held those positions. I am very surprised about ULM winning the Div IA competition over Kentucky, are they in the same level of competition or are they considered "small school" IA?
  14. Just announced on the radio broadcast that the Sun Belt conference tourney will have expanded TV this year - both men and women's games, all rounds except the very first round will be televised. The final round will be national on the Deuce again but added this year are the 2nd and 3rd rounds (both men and women) on ESPN plus/regional. So hopefully Ch 52 will pick that up and if they don't we can order them on the dish to watch the Mean Green in Bowling Green.
  15. I couldn't make it out to little D tonight so I will be chillin' in the chat room and listening to the game, hope to see the usual suspects in there as well as some new folks. Chat Room Link
  16. So have we moved over to the strong Cheerleading Association now, just can't compete for this year? From what I understand there are two major competions/laegues and we were prviously in what was considered the "easier" league. From your post, I take it we have moved on up with the big boys of cheer? When will will resume competition, next year? I would like to see how we do in a more competitive league. I just can't respect any league that ULM can win.
  17. From everything that I am hearing, the last of the Eagle name (held onto by one team out of the 17 - the women's basketball team) will be gone after this year. Personally, I think the Lady Green sounds pretty good but I mentioned it one time on the board and was really torn into. Mean Green is a fine name for all teams, all the other women's teams seem to really like it's uniqueness and I think that the lady basketball team just needs to move on and accept it. Maybe they can be known for being a more dominating team with a tougher nickname. I don't know why any women's team would want to play down their name by putting "Lady" in front of it, sports are supposed to be fierce competitions whether you are a guy or a girl. A female soldier fighting for our country isn't referred to as a Lady Soldier, they are just a soldier.
  18. I went to see Miracle last night, the story of the 1980 US Olympic hockey team that beat the Soviets and went on to win the gold and it was great. They try to paint a picture of the US in the late 70's and do so by showing footage of oil strikes and commercials. The most prominent commmercial is the Mean Joe Greene Coke commerical essentually pitting itself as the exclamation point of US culture for the late 70's/early 80's bookmark. Made me all warm and fuzzy inside
  19. Smoking Gun busts good Old Bobby
  20. I believe that we got it for 2006 as well.
  21. Well, I know that Zeke, CMJ, and our usual anonymous guest will be in there, anyone else that wants to join in would be welcome. Chat Room KNTU Live Game Link The women's game is going on right now (5:20 p.m.) I think the men's game starts at 7:00.
  22. The most ironic thing is that there is no Eagle anywhere in our name. It was changed to the Mean Green 4 years ago for ALL teams (men and woman) except women's b-ball. The reason why our releases always get screwed up is because we contradict ourselves.
  23. Just wondering.. we play at Lafayette on Thursday. Would any of you be up for a road trip down there to watch the Mean Green, we could even go to New Orleans afterwards for a one night deal before heading back... just testing the water of interest here.
  24. Even better guys, I was at the game tonight but had to leave a little early to take a friend home, anyways, the crowd was mostly locals. Students - maybe 300 or so, the Pit is filling up with real basketball fans that are starting to take notice. I think I am correct in this - we are basically 4 points from being 7-0 in the Belt. We lost to NMSU by 3 and to UNO by 1. Not only are we winning games that we would have lost just last month, but we are playing every game close no mater the opponent. That shows me good coaching. Coaching that knows how to adjust to the opponent rather than just throwing out the same game no matter who we play. JJ is a good coach and RV is proving himself to have a real eye for seeing that a program is being built the right way, rather than just looking at the W/L record. That contract extension is looking better every week.
  25. Well, I finally found the online broadcast of the Men's team. You have to go to www.thewordfm.com and click on listen live in the top left corner. If you are out of town and want to listen/chat I will be hanging in the chatroom. Chat Room
