  1. The next time someone calls you a "compass point" school then you will have a great comeback - until then you are a directional school just like us.
  2. Tubbs retired from TCU and then Lamar hired him as the Athletic Director. He now serves as their AD and basketball coach I believe. I think he wanted to coach the team for a couple of years to get it out of the cellar so that he could bring in a good coach to move it forward. He has done a fine job so far. Tubbs is doing for Lamar what Lou Henson did for NMSU, helping out an old friend that was in trouble of losing their program's storied history... I believe that Tubbs is a Lamar alumnus. I made the game tonight. We are about 200% better then we were two years ago. JJ is the real deal and now that he has "his" players things are really clicking. There is one true star on the team and that is Hopkins but the surrounding cast is filled with people that can take his place when he graduates. I was very proud of the team tonight.
  3. They actually had 9 days, you can't really prepare for a game Saturday night after your game ends. If they get an invite this Sunday it would give them 17; plus they are the ONLY CUSA school that would be done with finals plus they do not have the Dickie V Classic beign played on the same night with their storied basketball team participating in it right up the highway in which those fans have had months to plan and pay for the basketball trip. We could do a lot worse than Cinci.
  4. Actually they are getting $13 million bucks to go to the Fiesta Bowl to take on a very beatable #21 Boston College.
  5. He was asked if he was in talks with any other schools, he said "no"... with the first non-BCS team to burst into the big money riding on this last game against BYU I would imagine that he was being completely honest.... no coach worth his value would be entertaining job offers during the week before the biggest game of his career. After the Fieata Bowl invite is extended and accepted, I would bet that Meyer will start answering some of those calls and returning the countless phone calls that have come from Gainesville over the last two weeks. The big question is this, will Meyer stick around long enough to coach his team through the bowl game or will he pull a Franchione and let his assistants coach the game?
  6. Especially since he turned down the job and is on his way to South Carolina to replace Lou Holtz. I would look for Urban Meyer to take that Florida job after he is done knocking off Oklahoma/Boston College in the Fiesta Bowl.
  7. Rudy, no offense but Meyer is headed to a BCS school more than likely. Even if he stays at Utah, it will be with a HUGE contract (in the 7 figures) and it will be with the hope that the MWC will replace the Big Least in auto BCS bids. He is about to be the first coach ever to burst into the BCS system with a non-BCS team. Having him on a "wish" list would be equal to listing Bill Parcells as comig to North Texas, just is not going to happen. Not even the slightest chance that it will happen. If Dickey is offered another job and decides to take it (that is a big IF - he is still 10 games below .500 and has shown that he builds programs very SLOWLY, not on the fast track that most high profil jobs want to see)... but if he leaves, I would expect Kenny Evans to be promoted from within the same way tha Patterson was promoted at TCU when Franchione left. My realistic wish would be for DeLoach to come back and be head coach with Evans as the top assistant.
  8. Dickey has been here like 7 years now and is 10 games below .500. You may be a new fan but some of us have been around for awhile. It is not acceptable to lose to FAU and Baylor. ULM and Troy have both beat FAU, they are not the giant killers we all thought they were. Hawaii will not even have the 6 wins to make thier own bowl so that win is not nearly as spectacular as it was at the time. We should have beat them, it was poor preparation and execution (along with a slew of silly penalties and god awful special teams) that lost those games. There will be no apology from me (or anyone else I imagine) for getting angry about an 0-4 start. We should have won at least one of those. Winning out and winning the bowl will make up for it but the 0-4 start did incredible damage to our fan base and at a very volatile time. If you take a look at our attendance this year than you will see why a lot of us were pissed and quite frankly scared after that start. We finished last year 9-4 with a loss. We opened up this year 0-4 bringing out last ten game record to 5-5. That is fine, it is .500. But one of those losses was to a IAA school and the other was to a school that we beat by over 40 points last year. Not sure what you want from this whole BS arguement but I am certainly not going to apologize for being mad about losing 5 games in a row, 2 of them to games that were penciled in as W's on most people's schedules.
  9. It was a tough race, almost "sports" like - I know this is the football board but if we cannot break the rules for one day for one thread after the largest election in the history of the country then we need to re-think the rules. So, I hope this stays, and nobody gets too mad - but thank you to Kerry for running a tough campaign that was honest and showed the differences of the two groups and thanks to the President for working as hard as he can to keep us all safe. God Bless. -steve
  10. Well, I have asked two of the mods and they have all said they did not do it. Would the person that did delete it please explain to us why? Heck, one of the mods even responded to the thread and added to the conversation (ArkStFan) saying that this was a common thing for fans to do but we would have to figure out how to pay for it. By the way, the way I would propose to pay for it would be to hire a reduced staff. Go after DeLoach and have him be Head Coach and D-Coordinator. If he is not interested, there are tons of othetr coaches out there. Hell, ULM got Weatherbie for $15K a year. Money should not be the problem. Dickey would get picked up by someone in some sort of capacity and we would only have to pay the difference of the salaries... If nothing else, Dickey should have fired Flannigan by now but he is choosing his friendship and "fatherly" position with him over the advancement of our program. We can't have that, we need a true offensive coordinator, and we need it NOW.
  11. I posted about the talk that is going on about taking out an ad in the paper to show the BOR our displeasure with Coach Dickey and asked people interested in being involved to e-mail me at stebo1@gmail.com, I did not mention any players names - I mentioned a basic rationale behind the ad - and I expressed that the ad would encourage others to show up to the game and voice their displeasure there as well. This was NOT an offensive post and I did not break any rules whatsoever; so why was it deleted? Have we gotten to the point where GMG deletes posts about things that they do not agree with? If so, that is fine - I am not going to huff and puff and say that I am never going to post again - but I would really like an explanation for deleting my post. If I take the time to type it all up and inform other fans about a group willing to back up their message board talk then it should be left alone even if you don't agree with it. At least esplain to me (and everyone) "why" the post was deleted, a few people had replied - I had 4 e-mails pledging money to it, one from a very influential donor to the program that I would have NEVER guessed would have been 100% for taking such an action. Why delete the post to try and censor what a lot of fans want to talk about and take action. I am not calling for riot, I am not making any personal attacks... in fact, the ad wasn't even my idea - it was posted on the other board, has a few people that are willing to put up money for it and is a normal thing that is done at many schools when fans are unhappy with the regression of one of their teams through poor coaching. So tell me why in the heck we cannot have a civil discussion about getting rid of a head coach that MOSTof us do not even like?
  12. I would totally encourage that. Remember, this was the "hired guns" (funny phrase for an usher) first game. I watched countless exchanges between the usher and fans that got sick of showing their ticket everytime they left to go get a drink. I get the feeling that it will be adjusted... but they had to come out strong their first week to let people know that the funny business had come to an end. The ushers, like the additions in the Sun Belt, will make our life a little tougher but will inevitably be part of the puzzle that save us from ourselves. Every time we give something away at a game there is someone that paid full price that feels like he/she just got ripped off. I have listened to it countless times on the deck from the people that actually spend money. I really don't give a damn if a moocher gets scared away, that is one less moocher we have to deal wih for decades to come. It is time to start acting like a IA program. Wait until they start scanning ID's.... and yes, they were supposed to start doing that this week but there was a software glitch. Those students that wait until the last minute to go in will be rolling in about halftime when they start scanning ID's next game... and I am sure they will be all over the boards complaining about it even though there is a huge ass sign hanging up saying that they are going to do it.
  13. Something strange just came over me. I was trying to get to sleep, thinking about the whole damn game and I realized how two people can see one thing and think two completely opposite things. When I left the stadium, I told my girlfriend that the one good thing about the day was that it wasn't a conference game. We talked about it for awhile and I told her that I was wrong, that I was so happy to see that the athletic dept had finally gotten serious about having REAL ushers at the stadium. It has pissed me off to no avail watching all of my old friends take advantage of the lack of man power at Fouts for all these years. I was actually very very happy to see some ushers at the game telling people to get out of the seats they weren't supposed to be in. You know, we all go to the games and know that you can pretty much just sit anywhere that you want (up until today)... we know the system and when yuo know the system you take advantage of it. It sucks now; heck I will be the first to admit that my seats aren't in the best section and that this will force me to upgrade. I got lucky today because a group of my old fraternity brothers had two extra seats in their section and my guests that I was supposed to get tickets for didn't show up so I got to sit in my "mooched" seats rather than the ones that I would have had to sit in. But I don't care. It is time that we start acting like a Div I school. And I don't care if seats are empty, you just can't go sit in them... go outside to the ticket window, walk up to it and say that you want to buy a ticket in that seat. I have tickes to the Mavs as well and when a seat is empty in the lower section I can't just mosey on down there and proclaim that it is my new seat since it is empty. I am stuck in the middle balcony (along with Chaddy ... Can't bring water in? Hell, you can't bring outside drinks into any sporting event... you can't even bring it into a movie theatre, why should you be able to bring it into Fouts? NT needs the money more than any other place that I can think of, they are the last people that shoudl just continue to let people take advantage of them. I don't know about them running out of water, I was drinking Power Aid and they never ran out of it... but if they did (run out of water) than that sucks BUT it also means they must have sold a hell of a lot of it. Why do you think that is? Could it be because they actually made a few pennies off of concessions today? You say that ran out of water in the 2nd quarter? That pretty much pisses me off even more. If they could have been selling 4 times as many drinks all these years instead of letting people bring their own in then we might not have had to sign two money games this year. We might not have to go to LSU next year. Folks, our athletic department has the right to try and make some money off of these games, this is not a socialist cause where we are all entitled to our own space at no extra cost. There are water fountains in there, I took a drink out of one tonight. Buy one drink and fill it up out of the fountain if you are broke. And you can damn well be sure that they will be enforcing it even harded next time if they were able to sell that much water today. And since they now know that the problem was that people were just bringing their own in ... they will be better stocked next time. I know that this whole new system is going to cost more for us to go to a game but quite frankly, it is about damn time. I don't feel "entitled" to anything at NT for free; expecially when there are others that are paying full price. As far as the students are concerned, the section needs to be expanded. That is a good problem to have. But the way to do it is to ask the dept for more seats through your student government association; not scream about the ushers that are just doing their job. This whole day just has a bad taste in our mouthes and we are looking for someone or something to take our frustration out on. Lets just be happy that they are finally enforcing the rules that should have been enforced since we moved back up to Div I in 1994.
  14. No, they wouldn't let outside drinks in (which I 100% agree with) and they wouldn't let the student go BACK to sit in the bleachers because she did not have a ticket for that section; but rather a pass to sit in the student section-which **sorry** I agree with that 100% as well. North Texas fans are way too used to treating Fouts like their living room, coming and going as they please - sitting in any section they want - using student ID's for decades after graduation to get in free. The dept hired an outside firm to fix these problems, this was their test run. It was a shock to most people to see the game actually run like every other IA school in the country. Eventually they will get used to it. The student could go to the bathroom, but she would have had to go sit back in the student section because she was sitting in seats that are not free to sit in. If you want a drink, buy one in the game, they are $2.00. In order for us to stop playing UT and getting our asses tanned - we have to learn to make money at our home games. Granted, it was a shock to actually see these rules be enforced tonight and since it was the first time, the company probably did not realize that the majority of our fans are spoiled.... but still, we have to eventually start acting like a stadium with rules.... I would fix this problem (if I were RV) by expanding the student section to include some of the end zone seats for people that don't like "crowds".. but I think the whole point is to get everyone in a concentrated plce to generate a better atmosphere rather than have them speckled throughout the stadium.
  15. Damn, I miss Denton pizza. The Tomato, TJ's, even Andy's Pizza is great. As far as the Shorthorn is concerned; I think he should enroll in English Composition 101 at North Texas. His grammar is a bit on the weak side... or as Shorthorn would write "A bit week side".
  16. http://msn.foxsports.com/story/2638378
  17. Drew got benched because he woud go in (against very tough teams) and screw up... and then Scott would go in and do considerably better. If the reverse happens this year ten just as many people will be wanting for Drew to start again. Drew had me rooting for him... and then he lost me when I saw in person how much better Scott was playing. If Scott screws up and Drew is able to give relief, you can bet your grandmother's pension fund that Dickey will play Drew more. Dickey gets bonuses for having, 7, 8, 9 win seasons, a bowl visit, a bowl win, certain rankings, etc... and he is going to do everything that he can to make as much money as possible and win as many games as possible. Last year, Scott was the better resource for that. Even with all that being said, there are some players that are untouchable. A good example was BK last year. Look, BK didn't exactly have a stellar year last year and some fresh legs MIGHT have helped out quite a few times. But he earned his spot, he has the respect of his teammates, and nobody would ever try to bench him. Hall is the same way this year. Awasom, Bazaldua, Hall... heck, probably about 6 or 7 guys are untouchable. They are the backbone of the team and are going to be starting unless they are hurt. Smith will be that guy next year I hope. I personally don't think that Byerly is that much better than either Hall or Smith.
  18. Look E-Bone, I didn't say that I knew why Smith lost it last year, pehaps it was because he had someone looking over his shoulder constantly and he couldn't handle the pressure. But the Air Force game and the Arkansas game showed split time betwen the two against the same defenses and Scott was far superior. Smith got in for for more time than your stats skew.. you are right, he only atempted 3 passes. Because he was either being sacked, fumbling the snap and jumping on it, or scrwing up a hand off. And all of this wa because of the chemistry issue. Andrew is a fine QB, I don't know why he cracked last year. I remember him saving the day in Jonesboro and I remmeber him having some moderate success in 2002; but that defense in 2002 was incredible. Our offense ended up ranked in the 100's even with a bowl win in 2002. Last year we had a more balanced team. Scott just has the "it" factor and I am not going to change your mind on that. You and your brother and JD like Drew better, that is great. all fans have the right to have their favorites. But Scott is untouchable this year to start the season and unless he really screws up or gets injured then it is his job all season long. Accept it or be miserable. Did you go to Air Force or Arkansas last year? If you ahd seen the difference that was made once Scott went in than you would not be able to argue this. Even the most biased fan could not argue who was the better player if they went to those games.
  19. That is not how it works. We have invesed time and money into these players and they have invested their future in us. You try telling Awasom that his starting spot is "up for grabs" this year, or BK last year, or Cody Spencer last year... any number fo the marquee players would apply. There are some things that can be messed with, the QB is not one of them. A QB has to have chemistry with his surrounding coast, everything ferom the line, to his blockers, to his receivers, to his runners, everything. So, no - not every job is up for grabs every single year, only the jobs of the mediocre, broderline, or bad players are up fro grabs this year. Hall went 8-1 last year with his only loss being in a bowl game to a VERY GOOD Memphis team. If you put his job up for grabs as you suggest, just to appease a few botter fans; then the team will be split right down the middle on the whole thing again. We have already gotten past that, we do not want to bring it back. Scott is the starter unless he gets hurt. Drew will be the starter next year or if Scott gets hurt this year. The only way you see Dreww start a game this year is if Scott goes down, or if we lose a conference game or two. Then - and only then - would Dickey give Drew a shot at trying to get his spot back and start rebuilding Drew's confidence siomehow. Andrew Smith last year was not the same Andrew Smith as 2002, he has lost his confidence. The mop up time that he would get was absolutely horrible. He couldn't even perform against the 3rd stringers in the 4th quarter mop up time against Sun belt compeition last year; Dickey had to keep Scott in and risk injury so we wouldn't lose the game in the 4th. I don't know what happened to him, maybe it really was the defense that helped lead Drew to the bowl and the win in 2002... but he will always have that on Scott and Scott HATES that... which gives us a hungry Scott, not a content Scott. He wants to win his bowl game, too. So don't be worried about him slacking out there. Wait till he lights up Baylor for another 30 or 40 points, all of these stupid arguements will stop - just like they did last year.
  20. Completely agree, Signed, Staunch Republican... hoping for Edwards as a running mate for Hairy Kerry or no vote from me for either one.
  21. I am offended EXTREMELY by religious television but they have every right to broadcast it. I am much more offended by scamming preachers that flat out lie to little old ladies over what others consider to be vulgar (and I consider to be just funny and innocent)... Point of view is a state of mind and nobody in this country should have the right to decide what is vulgar for someone else. The old rules kept things in line. They are taking it to Nazi extreme now. I voted for Bush and have fought for him for 3.5 years, he has let me down on one thing (no, not the war) - the restriction of the 1st Amendment. Reminds me of the Political Witchhunts and the Hollywood Blacklist days. Just sickens me, sickens me to death. Lenny Bruce was a brilliant man, we see that in retrospect. People like Stern will be dismembered by our government and will be martyres just like Bruce was/is. Eagle D, I have always told you - I am a social minded Democrat and an Economic minded Republican, when you own your own business you can't help but see both sides. But Bush ran on COMPASSIONATE Conservatism, he has gone back on his word. Howard Stern will win this vote for John Kerry, you think I am crazy but with 30 million listeners that get to listen to him talk about it every day for up to 5 hours a day (and don't want to see it go anywhere), they will do exactly what Stern says and vote Democrat. Stern has been the biggest supporter of Bush and the war that there is. That is not the point... this is the 1st Amendment, and you don't mess with my rights.
  22. That is just not true. Pearl Jam got sued by their recrod company for their colllege tour. They also played SMU. All tickets were sold through UNT and you had to wait out all night long to get them at the pit. You could only get a ticket with a student ID and were limited to 2 per person. I just have to say, thank god for pledges.... they would only let you get 2 per student ID. I think Wes (Greenballer) might have been my thump to freeze all night for me. As for why NT doesn't have any more concerts at the pit.. uhhhhh... beer? It is wat actually wahst makes the money at ALL venue events, no beer, no profit. Simple enough. Little tidbit.... the drummer (have no idea who his name is) went to NT for a semester and they announced it at the show. Later that night he showed up at a Sigma Nu party and actually passed out on one of the couches there after sampling some of Denton's homegrown. Pearl Jam is infamous for going against "the man"... they were the first to refuse to play any Clear Channel venues (years and years before the Janet Jackson/FCC/Chris Rock/Stern situation) and have ben trying to get other artists to join in with them since that time. They were very unsuccesful and eventually caved (ever notice how Pearl Jam went from being played every other song on the radio to not being played at all?).. Their fight is being picked up by plenty this time and Pearl Jam is at the front of it again, this time not alone. Recently Chris Rock had a tour where his stipulation was that the tickets be not more than $100 each. Since Clear Channel couldn't hardball him with radio airplay like they do all of their artists, they simply sold all their good seats to their own ticket "brokers" (scalpers) for that $100 price and then those same "brokers" - scalpers - turned around and sold them for up to four times that for a kickback to Clear Channel for the rights to get the tickets; making even the worst seat $400.00 bucks at some locations. Who got screwed? the customer.... they paid a 400% increase. Who else? Chris Rock and everyone that worked on his tour; they got a percentage of ticket sales... the $100 a ticket percentage, not the "real" tickets' price. And Clear Channel can't be touched because they are in bed withthe FCC and George W. I am a staunch Republican but while we are fighting (and dying) for freedom of speech and the right to show freedom of expression for the Iraquis overseas; back at home we are putting down the iron fist on censorship all because of a 1/4 exposed nipple for less then one second that most people didn't even see because it was so fast. We have taken this too far. I have lived overseas and nudity is nothing, they even have nude newscasters to get people interested in the news right on regular TV. So we comdemn harmless nudity or jokes about sex yet we allow a a monopoly like Clear Channel to go along untouched. Just makes no sense. MGW is going to freak at ths one but if George W. doesn't call off his religious FCC chairperson - who just happens to be Powell's son (what has this guy ever done tp deserve this position anyways?) than my vote might not get cast this year or even worse.... if Edwards runs with Kerry I might be forced to vote Democrat. I understand wanting to clean up the airwaves; but it is hypocritcal for us to fight for free airwaves in Iraq; complaining about anti-US propaganda by Al Jazeera; while at the same time performing our own witch hunt and censorship right at home. Shock Jocks like Stern walk the line but rarely cross it without being bleeped and he being persecuted by the FCC and Clear Channel because he is backing anyone against Bush; Clear Channel has every employee donating to the W campaign because they want to be protected from an obvious anti-trust/monopoly lawsuit... that is dirty politics. For those of you that don't know, Clear Channel has slowly built up their conglomerate to be untouchable. They own the rights to almost every major concert venue in the country. They also own the most pupular radio stations and do the bookings for the the majr venues as well as the small clubs all the way to the smallers clubs like Trees in Dallas. It is nearly impossible to perform any type of tour and make money without going through them and if you don't go through them you are mysteriously taken off their playlist for the entire country. If you aren't that big yet, they make you sign a deal that if you don't play a place like "Trees" then you cannot play the Granada (or any of their other venues)... you are just screwed as a bad trying to get heard. BACK TO THE SUBJECT, this is nothing new; Pearl Jam fought this once before; that is the REAL reason that they did the college tour. They barely broke even; only playing college campuses for a steal (I think my ticket that the thump stood in line for me was less then $20 bucks)... they had to play college venues beause they were literally the only venues not controlled by Clear Channel even way back in 1993. As for the other question... it isn't a matter of being lazy. Ever wonder why we don't have better bands come through the Pit anymore? Two things, no beer seals and no smoking is one part but the most important reason is the evil of Clear Channel. I encourage you to write your congrssman and voice your displeasure on this travesty and hypocrisy. Save guys like Stern and Pearl Jam; you may not agree with what they say or "how" they say it; but I am willing to bet that 100% of us would fight for their right for free speech and anti-monopolies. It even trickled down to my little bar way back in 1994. Deep Blue Something loved my bar and wanted to play an "unannounced" jam session one Sunday night back when "Breakfast at Tiffanies" was really hot; Clear Channel caught wind of it and threatened to pull the whole tour... after about 4 more of these occasions Deep Blue tried to call their bluff on it; their next CD (the follow up to Breakfast at Tiffany's) was finally released in the US 7 years later after being tied up in court by Clear Channel overseas. They turned what could have been the next big NT band into a one hit wonder. Bastards. They did the same thing to Tripping Daisy, Daisy told them to go screw themselves and they were dropped from their Jay Leno gig after a succesful Conan gig. They are doing it right this time with Polyphonic Spree but are forced to play overseas for half their dates and free concerts all over the US at wierd venues because of CC... ever hear Polyphonic on the radio? Wonder why? Their independant debut album made it up to #1 for 3 weeks straight but the best they could get was a clip in a commercial about the iPod and a clip about the 4 show Fox Flop "Wonderfalls"... they stuck to their guns and are headlining a watered down LalaPalooza now after a succesful run opening up for David Bowie.. By the way, they finally are getting to play Leno, this time on their own terms. http://www.thepolyphonicspree.com/press/Lo...lasnews.com.jpg
  23. I hate that they repealed that rule. It is that rule alone that has given the smaller schools a way to get quality recruits when the bigger schools reached their quota.
  24. Take this little online test, it takes less than a minute. But also read the Dr Phil Bio (they actually got our name right)... http://www.superlaugh.com/1/drphil.htm
  25. Well, it took three years but the girls have finally given up their stubborn plight to be called something different than the other 15 sports at NT and are now Mean Green just like everyone else. At least that is what they are saying on the radio now and that is what they are calling them in the broadcast. About time.
