  9. I second those confused/bewildered faces.
  10. nope, not that I remember - he was a tight end.
  11. Waters was not really an impact player in college. He was a tight end at North Texas and got even less playing time then Andy Blount. He has really earned every penny that he makes today, his career at North Texas definitely didn't get him into the NFL - getting a practice by the Cowboys (and excelling that day) got him a practice squad spot. Eventually they liked his size and natural ability and they moved him around until he found a position that he could grow into. I give Brian 100% of the credit for his success in the NFL, we did not groom him for it, he took his own future into his own hands and made something happen.
  12. I keep hearing Todd Dodge's name being tossed around. From what I undestand; he is very big on his offensive "system" and that he is such a micro manager about it that he has it listed in his contract that the kids from Pee Wee all the way up through High School JV will be taught the system. That way he can have them growing up learning his system (and playbook) so that by the time they get to High School Varsity; they are ready to be just plugged into the system. This whole system is one of the major reasons why Todd Dodge has had so much success (without any "rebuilding years"... "gaps"... or "learning curve years"). In his system, he has of 100% complete control, not only for his team but all the teams leading up to Varsity ball. I think that he must even have a say on new coach hirings; because obviously, they have to be able to succesfully run his playbook.
  13. Let me add one more to the list - a guy that has always spoke very highly of NT during his broadcasts... Jim Donnan. As for Corky, I did a little research and he last coached in 2004, leading Mary Hardin Baylor to the Div III Natl Championship Game. The comments that I read said that he left coaching due to poor health, so maybe he isn't an option. But maybe he left for personal reasons and is ready to get back in the game now; you never know. Does anyone have updated information on Corky Nelson? Evidently he was part of the staff that not only brought football (and men) to MHB; but had a tremedous amount of success while he was there in the capacity of Defense Coordinator
  14. You know who REALLY wants back into coaching? So much that he would probably be willing to work for less then Dickey? How about Jerry Glanville. He tried to get the NMSU position a couple of years ago but they went with the SE LA guy instead. I remember reading about it; I think that their starting pay was about half of Dickey's pay - somewhere around $115K before incentives. The problem with hiring a new coach isn't neccesarily buying out DD's contract. We could probably take that hit. The problem is hsving to buy out ALL of the contracts (including Flanny's). Any new coach will want to assemble his own staff. Dickey's staff is pretty shored up until next year. So we would have to cough up the money the way that Arkansas State did - buy out the coach and the entire coaching staff. When Roberts showed up in Jonesboro, they rolled out the red carpet for him and half of his staff from NW'ern State. We would need to come up with more then just Dickey's contract - Flanny would have to go, too. The new DC shouls be able to stay in my opinion. If the D wasn't on the field the whole game then they would be quite good. Even during the games where the Time of possesion is close; the D seems to be hanging their heads as each series goes by. I mean, if you are a Defensive player then your job is to get the offensive unit back on the field... but if you know that the O will just turn a good situation into a lousy one then you aren't as pumped up about doing your job. I would look at three people in order to try and turn this thing around: Gary DeLoach - we won the 2002 Bowl because of our D, our Offense was just good enough to not screw up what the D was out there doing. Someone like RC or even Spyke - someone that knows our situation, can appreciate how far we have come (hell, we had 17K show up for a 1-4 team yesterday folks!) They would be able to recruit locally right off the bat... maybe even get some players on those crazy lists that we "don't believe in" (LOL) Or if you want to go the Plummy route - a coach like Jerry Glanville or even Howard Schnellenburger. I think that Schnelly would actually do really well at NT. He doesn't have the resources at FAU that we have in Denton (scary, I know) - and I think that given a better set of circumstances, Schnelly could make one last run at being a national coach again. Seriously, how much could FAU be really paying him? I bet that we could double it. edited to add one more: Corky freaking Nelson... and I am dead serious. Corky could do things with this program that would have been simply a fantasy back in his day. He also would be able to truly appreciate the resources that our coaches now have and I think that he would be very humble/thankful to be given another chance.
  15. Bring back DeLoach
  16. As always, a great post by the Rickster
  17. It gets me pumped everytime I watch it. I will miss old Fouts Field when she is gone but I will welcome the new stadium like my own little football lovechild!

  19. Watch the video NOW - it will show you what Dr Pohl was trying to accomplish before he was run out of town by the tree huggers: http://www.creativeanimation.com/main/feat...rts/unt/unt.htm Make sure you click on VIDEO at the top... 8 minutes of your life and you will understand how much losing Pohl was a blow to the athletic program. You won't see Gretchen doing videos like this.
  20. Did you watch the stadium video? The 8 minute video is opened up by our President and has every coach comment on the importance of it. It then moves to RV (Rick Villareal), who is was 1/4 of the equation (I won't give him all the credit) to getting stuff done over the last 5 years. He is also the last one here with a new BOR around the corner. If you haven't watched that stadium video online, you need to take 8 minutes out of your time and watch it. This is what happens when you place an Officer from the Advancement Office into the AD and tell them to work together (that position has now been eliminated). There was open communication and a team effort going on. Now there are separate depts working on their own agendas. THIS WILL NOT WORK IN DENTON. Again, I am not going to bash on Dickey - because the problem is bigger then Dickey. This is about a coup that many of us SAW coming and could do nothing about. Wanna take back control of the program? Let's get some members of the Greenbackers on the BOR and go to town. Open up the checkbooks again and trudge forward. I don't care how much debt it puts us in, we will make it back 50 fold.
  21. Harry, in all my years of posting with you - one of my best friends on the planet - I couldn't disagree more. In order for our athletic dept to move forward, the checkbook needs to stay open and blank with the BOR and RV having the right to write as many checks as possible. We are making up for DECADES of neglect and Pohl opened up the checkbook - and basically told the guys, "Make it look legit" - they did that... kind of... we have some unpaid loans that will never be paid back. I am scared to death that our new Pres will demand repayment on those loans before moving forward. Not going to work in Denton, TX that way... you spend FIRST and then they come. Not the other way around.
  22. I didn't say that they HATED athletics. I said (at least I meant to say) that what NT requires was another Pohl. Someone to come in here on that platform of pro-traditional school - pro athletics - pro everything. Instead we have a very silent President and a very silent Chancellor. I have been down this road before and when they aren't talking it up, they could care less. Much like the apathetic students from my day. I fear that we will have a 4 year group of alumni that will look back thinking "wow, wasn't that awesome" when we could have kept the momentum going. Who knows, she might surprise me; but up to this point - she has done nothing to make me think that she will.
  23. He ran off Pohl and got that chick hired. And if you think that she is "pro-athletics" because she came from a program that had Div IA athletics then you are sorely mistaken. Her wavering comments down in Austin were enough for me to rush to judgement. When you are making your FIRST impression on the few folks that travel to see the team on the road (and fund the program); you shouldn't make statements like "Well, athletics have their "place" at every University"...
  24. Boy howdy, we had a nice little ride there Mean Greeners. For 4 years we had a President that was OPENLY VOCAL about Athletics being the "window" through which the rest of the country would see little old NT. It couldn't be more evident then watching that stadium campaign video. Well, somehow a new Chancellor snuck in on us and that Chancellor started off by ripping our logo situation apart. The end result looks terrible on TV. It looks terrible on the uniforms, it looks terrible on the helmets, and it looks terrible on all of those toothpaste green t-shirts that they keep giving out for free. We fought to be included. We were turned away. I think that was the knock-out punch for Pohl, having to answer to Lee Jackson - that is. The day that I heard that Pohl was leaving for no particular reason at all - I knew why he was really leaving... His baby was no longer his baby. With Bobby Ray and the BOR (in combination with RV, Pohl, and some winning seasons) - we were able to build some stuff and get some stuff remodeled. We just weren't done yet. And sadly - the new administration doesn't give a rat's ass whether we finish the job or not. I say this only because none of them have come out PUBLICLY and stated that we would not tolerate going backwards or even sitting in neutral. Pohl made statements like that... they always brought a tear to my eyes. I couldn't believe our good fortune. Say what you want about Dickey. I really don't give a damn. Dickey and I started off on neutral ground and I was probably the most vocal opponent of "Dickey Ball" up until he started winning. I used to rant and rant and rant about it. Then Dickey got us to some bowl games, and I bought him a nice bottle of champagne the night before I ate actual crow in his honor. Dickey was gracious in person - I think that I ended up drinking the champagne and he just wanted a few longnecks (New Orleans is usually a blurr - as you can see from those photos, hehe)... So while Dickey and I didn't really like each other at this point, I think he understood where I was coming from and I definitely understood that he was just a dad trying to put food on the table for his family like most of us. Last year, the losing came back... and I held my tongue. I told everyone that the man deserved a year to rebuild and then we would have something to REALLY bitch about. Well, the bitchfest has come a little premature in my opinion; but I don't want to argue it on here. I think that we could possibly go winless from here out. But what good will the bitching do? We have a crappy ass Chancellor and a crappy ass new President. If you are expecting Dickey to get fired; you should turn in your Mean Green card today. Mail back all those season tickets that you claim to be ripping up. Hell, mail them to me - I will find someone to use them. I will be at the games with my friends - enjoying the weekend... enjoying the tailgating, enjoying the deck, and enjoying making fun of the playcalling. These things will cycle around - but not until we have new leadership at the top. Pohl was the Jesus that we needed; we just couldn't hold onto him. ASU will be lucky to have him. Peace out and see ya at the game.
  25. omg - that is not even half funny
