South Alabama is already in our conference. This is not new news. Of course they have a good showing for their first ever game, even FIU sold out their stadium for their first ever game. If we had a first ever taking place, we would have a large crowd, too. We are also coming off a lousy season, actually a few lousy seasons. It is amazing that we had more than a few hundred at our Spring Game after the last few years. Dodge's first year had 8,000 for the game. Anytime there is something brand new, people get excited.

Is it a possibility that their fans are really excited to see the first ever USA team take the field? This is the silliest thread ever.

This ass clown came to Denton as a grad student and dropped out. He claims to be an alumnus but he never graduated. His undergrad is from Auburn and he is not in school nor is he an alumni. He has put together a website and is soliciting people to fax in an already filled out legal form to try and get the Senate to deny the fee. I have never called a State or National Congressman in my life - but today I am going to. After reading all of his comments and reading his new website - I believe that this person will go to any length to try and stop the stadium from being built. I implore you all to take a moment and print a form off from his website - put a big "X" across it - and write - I SUPPORT UNT AND OUR NEW STADIUM and then fax it to the numbers he has provided. If he is going to flood the Senator with negative faxes, I believe that we should have our voices heard too. If you can please do this - and call as well - to make sure that these Congressmen know the truth about this guy, I think it could do nothing but help our cause. The students did their part with the vote - we cannot expect them to be faxing and calling State Reps now... this is something that our alumni and supporters of NT can help with. Thanks. http://www.friendsofunt.org/

I have that bottle - with the curse word... Rudy Bazaldua bought me that in like 02 or 03, those years kinda ran together, lol. Good times.

Why do you say that? I am just curious. I don't think that you are right. It is about economics right now so I understand that. We just got done paying Dickey off this Spring, so I understand that. Dodge has what... 3 years left? The stadium opens in 2 which is when the athletic fee will start generating $6 million a year for the department. Contrary to popular NT Daily opinion, the entire fee will not be going to the stadium until $38 million is paid... it will just be used to retire bonds over a 15 year period or so. Anyway, I curious why you would consider Dodge "fire-proof"..? I think that this is his year to either perform or be put on notice. If he isn't performing in 2010, you bet your ass he will be let go and a new coach will be brought in to open the stadium. We would have one year to buy out - but the fee will kick in. Also, if we go 0-12 or 1-11 this year, he gets let go. Mark it down. Heck, he might even step down on his own... but I don't think that will happen, not with the schedule he has been given this year and next. This is a schedule built to win.

Thanks to all that came out. We lost in a heated 20-16 battle but I like everyone on the White team so I didn't even care. Thank you to the Green team, you guys are the best and we will get em next year. My knee is blown up like a balloon from my turf accident! I really hate losing but it was so much fun and my girlfriend took some great pictures... we will upload them here in a bit. Thanks again to everyone involved and for Nightmare for doing most of the heavy lifting. Thanks to UNT_92 Fan for his mohawk, dealing with my coaching tirade, lol - and for coming through with a clutch call to get the flags secured. And thank you to the ref that saved the day! Finally, thank to the players and a SPECIAL thanks to Sound man and crew that dragged the BBQ out and had tailgating food waiting for us when the game ended. Thanks to Hank from the Athletics Department - we got to play this game on Fouts and that was a GMG.com first (all bathrooms were unlocked and ready for us as well)! Thanks to Harry for running the best fan message board in the Southwest! Thanks to everyone that observed in prayer as we honored Drew, and thank you to Justin for the inspirational words during that prayer. Thanks to JayDub for showing up from Utah! Lots of thanks to go around! Such a great cause and such great fun! Basketball anyone?

This is so stupid. There were no uniforms ordered. RV and Dickey were barely speaking. The players had asked for a black uniform and the compromise was the black pants. Some of the players had requested an all black uniform, not the majority of the team - but some of the junior and seniors. Those juniors and seniors knew that there had been resistance to the black pants and were angry that Dickey had been let go after all of his bad circumstances. Dickey mae a promise that he could not keep - he did not have the authority to approve changing the school colors. I am sure that he requested them and RV said no... and Dickey probably argued with RV like always - and RV probably said - ok, I will order them (followed up by calls from Mattress Mac with even more threats to pull his donations from the department). RV (I am going to assume) tried to appease Dickey and tell him that he would look into it for the last game and when the week rolled around and Dickey asked about the jerseys, rather than argue with Dickey - RV probably said something to the effect of them being lost. It does not take a rocket scientist to piece this together. What happened next completely summed up why Dickey was let go in the first place. He went out, on his own - and ordered cheap black jerseys with ironed on numbers. Then, to make sure that nobody stopped the team from taking the field - he had them warm up in their Green uniforms. They changed into those Halloween costumes and to me it looked like the players were embarrased. I know that you have your son's side of the story - but I have another player's side of the story.. and by the way, my friend LOVES Dickey - thinks of Dickey as the father that he never had. My comment was that it was a shame that Evans could not be retained by the admin when Dickey left. He was the best of the bunch and had the most recruiting skills of the group. Going along with that stunt along with a laundry list of other things (that we have all hashed out a million times) was probably the reason why we had to completely clean house. There really was no other option. I think of it this way - I work for a company that has rules. If my boss was given two weeks notice and he decided to change dress code for everyone or whatever rules, or even flat out had us due unethical things during that last bit of time... I would have to stand up and say no - regardless of what my future was. Especially if I was in a position to influence young men. That defiant stance and those ridiculous antics are the reasons why most of the fan base was only willing to put up with Dickey if he was winning. The second that he started losing, he was going to be gone. Dodge is on the other end of the spectrum... more people are coming to see Dodge's losing teams than ever came to see Dickey's winning teams. Why? He is a likable man. We are rooting for him to succeed and willing to give him some time for that. Does that mean he is untouchable? Nope, he will be gone if he doesn't win 3 or 4 games this year. But the fans are hoping for him to get it done, with Dickey - we were only willing to put up with his antics if he was winning. one last thing - it wasn't Dickey the man, Dickey the man was actually nice. He came out to several of the flag football games and was incredibly cordial. He would give Vito an open door. He was nice to people close to him. It was just his lack of respect for the school that bothered me. It was like this was HIS team, not North Texas' team. Ok, I will shut up now, I know that we will never agree on this.
-
Knowing that his crew had been let go and that everyone was in a sense "Interviewing" for the next season at NT - I would be interested to hear why he thought it was entirely "ok" to go along with spitting in the face of our AD and wearing internet bought generic black uniforms with iron on letters. I think that a coach that loved NT and understood how much of an insult that would be would stand up and refuse to let it happen. He would have also been vocal about it. I suppose that Evans was hoping that Dickey would get a job somewhere else where he could bring Kenny with him. Sometimes you roll the dice and get craps. I really wish that you would have asked that question Harry.

If you have not submitted your bio - you have about a half hour. If you previously submitted and need to pull out, now is the time! Thanks for your patience on this! Steve
-
HAHAHAHA, y'all are funny. We will draft this Sunday. We will be using the chat room, I assume. And the rosters will be put up that day. We have been waiting on a few more players to submit their drafts... looks like no ringers this year. Emmitt, if you ever had a chance - here it is. Is everyone playing? Do you all have your bio's up?
-
hehe... looooooosing

Some of our alumni used to make fun of students that would complain at UNT... they would make comments about these students complaining about a $100 bill laying on the ground being too wrinkled to pick it up or bother with it. A wrinkled up $100 bill is still $100 bucks - haha, I get it. This Schedule: Sept. 3 at Ball State Sept. 12 Ohio Sept. 19 at Alabama Sept. 26 Florida Atlantic Oct. 3 Middle Tennessee Oct. 10 at Louisiana-Lafayette Oct. 17 Louisiana-Monroe Oct. 24 at Troy Oct. 31 Western Kentucky Nov. 7 Open Nov. 14 at Florida International Nov. 21 Army Nov. 28 at Arkansas State Is just about PERFECT. I mean, you really can't get better than that schedule as a mid major. The biggest knock on past schedules has been only 5 home games, we have 6. The biggest issues about OOC opponents have been that they are all body bag games - there is only one game on the schedule that is a most likely loss... but anything can happen with Bama, ask ULM. The Schedule CLEARLY states that November 7 is OPEN, I don't know how someone could read that schedule and think there was no Bye Week... we are not playing a team named "Open University"... the bye week is in a good space, too. 3 of our first 5 games are at HOME! We start the year with two MAC schools! Now, one of those is a very good team but we are not looking at this schedule and complaining that we are guaranteed to go into conference play at 0-5 like some past schedules have. As for having a game on Halloween, if that is the worst thing that we have - I will take that. If the game is at night, maybe the athletic department could have trick or treating at Fouts Field, it is a pretty scary place, hehe (right Rick?)... Anyway - I am just thrilled about this schedule, I will take a Halloween game over a Thanksgiving game... The Thanksgiving game an away game and that would be much worse than a Halloween night game.... but I do hope the game is during the day because parents like to trick or treat with their kiddos ) Ok - I feel bad for crossing the picket line and breaking the strike but seeing complaints about this schedule seemed a little sensitive to me
-
Hey radio, yep - no work conflicts this year (and god I hope that doesn't change!), I will be back as the Green Captain once again after a one year hiatus! I have just been waiting for Emmitt to say if he is actually playing or not... he has never won. Maybe I will draft him this year because I have never lost! Wait, that would increase my chances of losing? Yikes, well - maybe I will stay away from Emmitt... but I do like to see him get really upset and blame the loss on ringers that don't even play 75% of the game, lol.
-
I would like to add that last year was the only year that I could not make it thus I was not your coach... coincidence? I think not. You know what woulod be fun? Doing a reverse draft, like we did the first year of the game. Where the captains draft for the other team. That way the players are picked in reverse order and you are really hoping for the last pick instead of the first!

I am not sure if you are familiar with the Susan G Komen race "For the Cure" - but I would imagine that this is a very very smart marketing campaign to get the bowl certified... there are already 2 bowls in Orlando and this would make #3. By tying this to a popular charity, it is tough to get turned down... smart business move.
-
Wow, impressive! The Orlando Sports Foundation is committed to uniting the alumni, friends, faculty, staff and community of Conference USA and Sun Belt Conference schools in order to establish a premier sports federation dedicated to: Developing a premier post-season college bowl game Promoting national recognition of Orlando as the number one place for sports and entertainment Further establishing the already strong community and family atmosphere of the Central Florida region Helping to unite our community in the fight to end breast cancer
-
The list has Emmitt as available - has he pulled out? Emmitt - I want to see you win at least one GMG flag football game before you die an old age so playing every year will increase those chances. Please Please Play! Because if you don't, I won't know who to automatically not pick in order to win this.

What Makes Brett Vito A Football Guru?
stebo replied to greenblooded43's topic in Mean Green Football
I never said that I wanted Vito to put it in print - it is very obvious that he isn't. I was watching the Middle beat reporter's video blog last night and he said something like, "For those of us cheering for the men in blue..." - while this does not come right out and say it, you could tell that the dude just loves his beat that he covers. That is the way it USUALLY is. And that is the way it was before Dodge got here, Vito had no problem with DD. -
What Makes Brett Vito A Football Guru?
stebo replied to greenblooded43's topic in Mean Green Football
rcade, I did not set the precedent for beat reporters - that is just the way that things are. I am not requesting that our beat reporter do something different - I am just sad that he is not like every other beat reporter in the country. Beat reporters usually at least "like" the team that they cover and in turn they become fans... Vito once liked the Mean Green (and still likes the basketball teams), but he has a beef with Dodge (and vice versa, I assume)... You keep skewing the line between what a beat reporter really does and what Vito does. Why is this so hard to understand? Go pull up ANY of the other papers covering ANY of the other Belt schools and go back and read the beat reporters work. I do not think you will find any beat reporter using an open records act to "take down" the coach that he covers or constantly reminding the fan base how terrible the team was last year. Who reads the beat reporters work? The fans of his beat. Others just glance over it, probably looking at the title before they move on. The fans, the greenbloods - those are the people that actually read Vito's work. It is not real news - it is beat news. Am I the only one on this board that has ever worked for a newspaper? Greenbat - where are ya buddy, can you please explain to these defenders of the free press the difference between a beat reporter and a journalist? It is entry level by nature - so entry level journalists want to work their way UP from that position. The do this by keeping good relations with those coaches so that they do not have to beat report the rest of their lives. Back to what I was trying to explain - this is an entry level job and generally a beat reporter should keep good relations with the teams that they cover because if they don't, they will likely not get access to players, stories, or the field (in Vito's case). Because he does not have access to the team like he should, two things happen - he gets bitter and he doesn't get the whole story (which means we do not get the whole story, just Vito's distorted version of it). The problem is, Vito brough this on himself. Well, maybe they did it to each other - but regardless - Dodge does not need Vito, but Vito really does need Dodge. And as fans, we deserve a beat writer that can actually GET the story rather than guess what it is. Beat writers are the lowest on the food chain at a newspaper. The only way you can go lower is to be a stringer for a team that doesn't even merit a beat writer (little interest in that team). Vito seems like a nice guy and has been more of a straight reporter lately - but he needs to kiss and make up with daddy Dodge. -

stebo replied to greenblooded43's topic in Mean Green Football
Vito is the BEAT REPORTER for the Mean Green but is not a fan. Want to know how I know this? In his latest article, he admits it by saying "If I was a Mean Green fan..." because he isn't a Mean Green fan. I have met him over the phone and in person and he is a NICE GUY but when you are a BEAT REPORTER it is different than being a normal journalist. You are essentially assigned to cover the teams and MOST beat reporters want those teams to succeed. Go watch the DNJ (MTSU) video blog with Monte Hale, now that is a beat reporter. Read the FAU beat reporter - he is a regular cheerleader for them. Vito doesn't like Dodge and it is evident. If he was smart, he would stop requesting papers through open records acts to try and make Dodge look like he is out of control and concentrate on doing his job. The pot scandal blew up because of our own beat reporter and our prized WR left because of it. Its embarrasing. I do admit that he has fun with it but I would rather read Harry's articles on the team than Vito's - just because they are slanted towards being positive. I keep seeing people post that he is just being a reporter and reporters do this... well, that is true - but not BEAT REPORTERS... not that I have ever seen. -
You guys are looking at our hire against UTSA. UTSA students chose to "tax" themselves for the highest athletic fee possible a few years ago. When Dodge was hired, we were paying off Dickey's buyout and trying to find a coach that we could afford. Want to know who to blame for having to find a coach on a budget? How about - blame ourselves. When the students rejected the first athletic fee - the alumni did not jump in and subsidize that potential income with donations... they just screamed about how the students were apathetic. We have had ZERO "extra" money to hire anyone. People on here scream that we lost out on Harbaugh. Harbaugh was hired that year for a half million a year. We never even had a chance to get him, he simply interviewed and I would bet that once he found out that we were willing to pay at the most $200K, was never a cosideration. The facts are - this program has had to hire coaches that we could afford. With no athletic fee to speak of and a $3 dollar supplemental fee being used to pay for Title IX upgrades along with the Athletic Center - and a Dickey buyout on the books for the next 3 years - the only path that NT could have gone down was the afford route. We went with the affordable gamble that could get us the most media coverage and most local support. It worked initially. It still may work. When real Div I programs let a coach go, the alumni pay for the buyout and raise money for the new coach (see SMU) - not at North Texas. Our fans get on the one fan meesage board and bitch and moan about how our athletic director can't hire a coach. You get what you pay for and our fan base has not paid for shit.
-
Vito is a nice guy - a very nice guy. Vito has a problem with Dodge and he lets that get in the way of his career. Bad mistake in my opinion. A beat reporter is usually a fan of the team that they write about. Vito seems to like it when Dodge fails... I dunno, nice guy - wrong beat?
-
I would like to add a little bit of history to the origin of the game. Basically everyone on the board was fighting. I mean - everyone. So we had a thread about how when it is the offseason, guys get all hormonal because they have not had their fill of football and there is no end in sight to the end of the off-season. We organized the GMG.com bowl to cool everyone off and give people something to rally around (and quit arguing). I organized the first couple and they were fun... Medpilot took over around the 3rd one and it became a charity deal and really started getting big. So it started off as a way to get everyone together and fight out some message board aggresion... it turned into a charitable contest after Drew passed and the athletic department started to get even more involved than they had been in the past. I am very glad to see the spirit of th game continue, charity aside. This is a fun event and is a great way to meet the other posters on GMG.com. I hope that everyone is able to make it - t-shirts or not.
