  1. So we are approx. 12 short in the scholly players department this year. We will lose 14 to graduation and we will add 25 new ones next year. That would be 84 if there are no losses to injury, academics, love of the game, etc. I can see us still being short 5 - 10 scholly players next year. I like that Mac is preaching redshirting so we can at least have a full allottment of scholarship players some day. Here is my question - is this a Todd Dodge hangover or do a good number of schools go through this from time to time?
  2. I noticed a big difference in the type of athlete on the floor between the SLC and the SBC days with the SBC being a big step up. Of course there are good SLC teams these days i.e. UTA this year and SFA has had a nice run but overall the talent level is huge. Kinda like the difference in the SBC and the Big XII. I know we played a tougher OOC schedule back then but we always had a horrible record going into conference play. We have been far more competitive against the LBSU's and Colorado State's of the world in the last 5-6 years. So much so we are bitching when we do lose one of those games. I say all of this going back to - no way the '88 team hangs with next years team even without Tony Mitchell. I do believe Cooley when he says the teams of the mid 70's were so much better. The reason is we were coming out of the MVC - a top level conference for basketball. Even though we were pretty much a mid to lower level MVC team, a lower level MVC team had better players than most conferences i.e. the SWC. The best players want to play against the best competition. Pecking order. We should see better athletes in general when in CUSA. We were the class of the SLC in '88 and '89 but it was the SLC. Solid bench with Keevie and Whittington? I don't think so. The most solid thing Whittington did was propose to his fiance at the Super Pit. Remeber that? I can't remember if it was during or after - maybe halftime.
  3. I Loved that team. Morgan was a beast on the boards for sure and Worrell was a great overall player. Having said that - no way that team hangs with this years team. The thing I noticed then was how scrawny (sans Morgan) our players were against even the SMU's of the world. Our tall players were toothpicks. That team rolled in the Southland but lost a great majority of games in OOC. Our record was 17-14 for the year. We won 12 Southland regular season games and 2 more in the Southland Conference tourny. So...14 or our 17 wins were against SLC teams. We were 3-12 in out of conference games. Jones > Hunter Mitchell > Worrell Morgan > inside presence we don't have - yet Every other player on next years team > the best player in '88 not named Worrell, Hunter, Morgan
  4. Wahhh, my water is too wet! Wahhh, my ice cream is too cold! I am soooooooo sick of the poutrage.
  5. So true! My wife is a Tech alum and we go to Lubbock every year for a game and meet up with several of her friends. The pervasive attitude is that any non-conference game must be an absolute canned hunt. Their entire future OOC schedule includes Texas State, Northwetern State, Central Arkansas, New Mexico, and SMU - which I'm sure they are trying to find a way out of.
  6. The only teams willing to do a 2 for 1 at our place would be NMSU, Idaho, and a big stretch here - Texas State. Texas State only if they saw value in coming to the Metroplex twice in three years and the opportunity to knock off a CUSA team in San Marcos every third year. I am shocked they got Tech to play at their place this year but maybe Tech saw the value in rewarding their hill country fans with a game. I just don't see TCU and SMU playing in San Marcos. The question is would Texas State see value playing in the Metroplex against SMU, TCU with no return games greater than playing UNT with a return game every third year. If not, would a 3 for 2 work? They might see this as a good opportunity for their DFW fans and exposure against a team in a conference they want to be in. The only other teams from the Sun Belt that recruits DFW pretty hard that I can think of is ULM and ULL. I can't see ULL doing it. I suppose ULM might be willing if it made sense for them.
  7. I here ya man. As a parent who will be sending his first of three children to college in 3 years cost is very much an issue. I don't think anyone is "enthused" - more like grim reality if we want to compete in the current environment. I just think we need to maximize everything we can and unfortunately that falls on the students and parents of students.
  8. True and I believe the State of Texas has determined the ethical limit to be $20. So a full time UNT student pays $300 a year to fund athletics currently and a UTSA student pays $510 and a Texas State student pays $480. So maxed out a full time student will pay $600 a year. I'm torn on this but my final answer is that I think we have decided to go down the athletics route and the fee should be maximized, I don't think $10 per hour is going to get it done in CUSA. We need to be "all in". I too am shocked that an opportunity for a fee increase was not taken.

  10. I am encouraged Mac and staff are on these guys first!!!! I like that Mac and staff know who they want and go get them. They signed 2 LB's with size and speed. Let me repeat that - they signed 2 LB's with size AND speed. These two recruits will be courted and offered by other programs. The fact that we were in on them first is a great sign. Patrick Cobbs is another player we were in on first and because of that we were able to fend off Oklahoma State who offered late in the process.
  11. Yes, it's gonna happen. As far as the star stuff goes - if this guy can play he will be a 3 star because of the size and speed. We have 10 LB's on the roster and here's the breakdown: Six are listed at 6'0'' One listed at 6'1'' Four listed at 6'2'' One listed at 6'3'' This kid has not even started his senior season so I'm guessing he's 17 or 18 years old. This kid has at least another 5 years of growth in the height department. He will get bigger.
  12. Yes, please explain. This is a big and fast linebacker. His size (6'3'' 200 lbs) could easily (probably) be 6'4'' 230 lbs by the time he hits the field for us. That is an NFL sized linebacker bro.
  13. Who are the four? Lance Dunbar - has not made a team yet Jamize Olawale - has not made a team yet Craig Robertson - Darrell Dickey recruit #4 ??? Oops, how can wone forget the great Brian Waters?
  14. I know you received a J.D. from Tulsa and follow them closely but why do you think that? They have 12 players from the North Texas Area on their roster. They do have a total of 27 from Texas.
  15. Funny, as a lifelong North Texas resident I have no idea where Alvin and Angleton are located until I looked it up.
  16. Exactly. It was my attempt at making fun of let's change the helmet/uni threads.
  17. We need to make a splash with our uni's in CUSA. Yep, we need to BeDazzle. Look at what this dude with a mullet did with a sweater paired with gold football pants. Don't say it can't be done.
  18. Yes, I know this is the wrong forum. Joel is a great guy and one heck of a teacher. Go Mean Green! Cool article on Joel. http://www.pga.com/seniorpga/2012/news/joel-edwards-loves-competing-and-teaching-052312.cfm

  19. Why can't GL2Greatness have a hard on for Western Governors University of Texas instead of us? He could argue the merits of an online degree. It is the Online University for Texas after all.
  20. Makes me glad we have RV. All of the "Assertions" in the article are spot on for UL. All of the "Assertions" were spot on for North Texas 10 years ago but we did something about it. They are where North Texas was a decade ago. They "plan" and we "did". Farmer can spin this until the cows come home but we earned this. I am already tired of the sour grapes by our conference mates. We addressed the budget and facilities issues and they didn't. Make no mistake - CUSA is a huge step up from the SBC.
  21. Some make it work, others don't. I would think candidates would have to be vetted even more selectively than HS kids to make it work. It just seems we have missed alot more than we have hit with JUCO's. Troy is just in a world of their own. It looks to me like they use the JUCO route as their farm system - to get kids eligible. It will be interesting to see how Troy responds this year. Talk about gaming the system. They signed 13 JUCO's in their last class and have 21 on the roster. Only 11 of their 40 (yes 40) 2009 signees are on the roster for 2012. They are showing 118 kids on the roster for 2012.
  22. Same thing happened to me in a Turkish prison.
  23. Hopefully is the key word. Houston, SMU, Memphis, Navy, Cinci, UCF, USF, Rutgers, and UCONN could cherry pick whomever they wanted from CUSA, SBC, and MAC. Fact is existing CUSA membership are not thrilled about the new additions and would bolt with that group in a heartbeat. We would leave for that conference in a heartbeat.
  24. That is the point he was making. It's one of the few "gotta watch live" programs on TV.
