  1. They certainly have the talent. Last year after they prison raped us in the opener, they beat Louisville and UCF in consecutive weeks. They lost by 5 to ULL and by one to WKU. Their only questionable Sun Belt loss was to Ark. St. 16-34. Yes, they were fourth in the SBC last year but were picked over the third place team for a bowl. They are only a few seasons away from dreadful records but they have been recruiting fantastically. That talent is starting to stack up and they are building depth. Their coach has rejected offers from several high profile positions because he thinks something special is happening there. In the pre season coach's poll they were picked to win the conference. Anyone paying attention knows they are about to be really, really good.
  2. You aren't going to hear much. I just hate having closed camp. I used to really look forward to Harry's reports every summer.
  3. Tony Mitchell on the opening kickoff. He is lined up on the front line and skies up to snag the opening kickoff then just waltz's in for a TD since the coverage has already run by him - except for the kicker but that doesn't count.
  4. You really can't control that. These guys are young. Hell, I'm 47 and I still pitch a tent on occasion.
  5. I hear you and I think our AD agrees. Unfortunately what we have been doing is not working. We are both blessed and cursed by being in a large market. Our situation is different from Hatiesburg or San Antonio. I personally know of some super cheap ass alums that would spend as much money in time and gas snagging free tickets than season tickets would cost - but those are in the monority.
  6. Yard signs - intruiging. I think you keep it simple and just give them away. You want 4? Here's 4. You make it as easy as possible for a person to attend a game.
  7. I think we need to fill that thing up by giving away tickets. The AD could figure out a reasonable conversion rate from the tickets they give away. Let's say they give away 30,000 tickets and 2,000 actually use them for a non-marquis game. These people will have to pay for parking and concessions so it really isn't a loss of revenue for people that weren't going anyway. Maybe a few cheapos will find a way to get these tickets who intended on attending anyway but it is crucial for this program to get butts in seats. I'm guessing the Wing holds about 8K - 10K people so give away 100,000 tickets. Just figure out the formula. In the extremely unlikely event of a sell out because of giving away too many tickets, say you are sorry and give them tickets to the next 2 games and credit for some concessions. It would be a bummer but it is more important to start filling up the App. Just figure something out in this unlikely event. Groups you could give to and feel good about: DISD - hey little kid, how many family members do you have? Four? Ok, here's four tickets. City of Denton - see DISD Religious Organizations (Have it be The First, Second, Third, and Fourth Babtist Church's of Denton night at Apogee) Youth Sports Leagues Your own donor/season ticket holder base - give them 20 extra tickets to give away to family and friends. I idea is to start this with the hopes of eventually having to stop this because the more people you expose to a great college game day atmosphere the more will want to come back - paying on their own. Please give me your feedback. I will go to the AD with this if you convince me this is not hairbrained.
  8. You know those obnoxious little signs that builders put out for their new developments they are trying to sell? They hire a service that will put out the signs for them. Do that around Campus and Denton to advertise. Anyone who drives around Denton and pays attention will know there is a game.
  9. Nice try but dogpiling is more fun.
  10. I missed this story - do tell.
  11. Future generations will view the gay marriage issue like we view things like child labor and women's suffrage movement. The obvious eventual outcome on this issue will be that gay marriage will be viewed as a fundamental right - which it is. In the meantime we will waste valuable time, money, and resources on this idiotic debate. Thank you founders for doing your best to keep church and state seperate.
  12. The "true death" is the worst.
  13. 1) Six McCarney recruited guys that become difference makers (all conference types) early in thier career. We already have a few role players but we need the true difference makers to show up this year. Last year there was no way I would have predicted 5 wins. I saw us more as a 0-3 win team. I am completely sold on McCarney if he gets us to a bowl this year although getting to a bowl seems a bit of a stretch.
  14. Liberal ideal? Liberal ideals like supporting capitalism, human rights, free and fair elections, and free exercise of religion? Could it be like the liberal philosophy that justified the armed overthrow of tyrannical rule i.e. the American Revolution? Nope, none of those - just the stupid stuff you want to believe a liberal is. What a crap ending to otherwise solid post.
  15. Meh. Film didn't show much at all.
  16. College sports are uniquely different from the pros and it needs to stay that way for their own self preservation. What you are suggesting is basically a minor league system to the pros. If college football/basketball/baseball becomes more exclusive and more like a minor league to the pros then it becomes less like the college game that is popular. Minor league teams are not a big draw and don't have big TV paydays. Are NBA fans really followers of the D league? I know I would never watch a college game ever again if what you are suggesting came to pass and I think far less people would care about the sport. Additionally, do you think Texas would ever agree to a level playing field with Texas Tech or Baylor so they could be in a NFL minor league situation? Never in a million years. The college game has to remain different from the pro game to stay relevant.
  17. Did everything come out ok?
  18. Follow the money. If the most lucrative four conferences think they can make more money by seperation there will eventually be separation. If they think otherwise there won't be a break. Like Stebo said about Vandy and I can point to Texas Tech. Just look at the way Texas Tech schedules. They have scheduled 3 or 4 OOC games every year against opponents they think they can beat (throw in a FCS here and there) and they usually win those games. Yes, they scheduled TCU and Houston but that was set up before they were as competitive as they are now. Anyway, if you take out those almost gimme games they are a mediocre team. Texas Tech's record since 2000 when they started their longest bowl run in FBS. 2000 3-5 vs. AQ 4-1 vs non AQ (Bowl loss to ECU and first of three bowls without a winning record against AQ) 2001 4-6 v AQ, 3-0 vs non AQ (Second bowl without a winning record against AQ) 2002 7-5 v AQ and 2-0 vs non AQ 2003 5-4 v AQ and 3-0 vs non AQ (Bowl win against Navy) 2004 6-3 v AQ and 2-1 vs non AQ 2005 7-3 vs AQ and 3-0 vs non AQ 2006 5-4 vs AQ and 3-1 vs non AQ 2007 5-4 vs AQ and 4-0 vs non AQ 2008 7-2 vs AQ and 4-0 vs non AQ 2009 6-3 vs AQ and 3-1 vs non AQ 2010 5-5 vs AQ and 3-0 vs non AQ (Third bowl without a winning record against AQ) 2011 2-7 vs AQ and 3-0 vs non AQ and bowl run over This was the most successful run in their history. If you take out last year they are 60-44 against AQ in their most successful era EVER. They went 34-4 against non AQ. Mike Leach is gone and he ain't coming back. Tuberville is a proven coach and he can't get it done there. That school is at the absolute breaking point right now. They have to have non AQ wins to count for them to stay relevant in their fans minds. If they aren't relevant in ther fans minds, they won't be relevant in a super non NCAA breakaway conference. Although a school like Texas Tech doesn't want to admit it, they need us. Without non AQ, they are no longer "winners" - they are just mediocre. Mediocre doesn't sell well. And remember this, Texas Tech has been a "successfull" program during all of this "mediocreness". If you were to look at the Vandy's, Baylors, Iowa State's, Washington State's type schools their records must be awful.
  19. History will tell if DMAC was the right hire but he sure seems to be doing everything right. Check out these comments from a reader and the writer. Mr. Mac, Obviously, the situation Pelini inherited did him no favors, but the vitriol that is on and off the record amongst some high school coaches in Palm Beach County is something that certainly made his job harder. I just got done covering high schools, and not once did I have a coach in Broward or PBC say that Pelini was doing a "great" job. Perhaps silence implied that from some coaches, but there were eight that I can recall off the top of my head that didn't have a nice word to say about the man when it came to how he recruited the hometown boys. I don't think that vitriol will carry over — it was likely just a bad first impression, but there's no way that doesn't make his already tough job tougher. --Dieter Posted by: Dieter Kurtenbach | July 8, 2012 9:29 PM guys,,,,pellini was wrong hire from outset...what the program needed was a coach with deep florida ties and to bring in one or two top hs coaches along with thier players.the other route was if we able to get a game changer well known coach ..look only to this years FAU HS team camp..they had ONLY 5 TEAMS ...in the past it was at least 15-20.... lets see where the conversations are this time next year... final thoughts...The new AD is going to figure out that the program needs a game changer at football coach...Jim tressel anyone???? that move is a real possiblity and would change everything. 20. That 59-7 dismantling was the largest margin of victory ever in a Sun Belt game. We attempted 7 forward passes that game.
  21. I find sofball very entertaining. It's played at a faster pace than baseball so I find it more entertaining than baseball - and I like baseball!
  22. Nah, that was the Sun Belt board. I always looked at the Sun Belt as stable. I prefered the stability of the SBC over that of the WAC. It was a good home for us when we needed it. I think a more accurate attitude of 90% of the posters on this board was "get us the heck outta here", while another 10% were supportive of the SBC but wanted CUSA/MWC bad. I honestly can't recall one poster much less multiple who thought the SBC was in any kind of position of strength and be able to "raid" CUSA.
  23. Mac is doing what WKU did a couple of years ago - getting bigger. I watched them against UK and LSU last year and they weren't getting pushed around like Bama did us. Their QB alone cost them the UK game. The size issue had to be addressed. Mac is recruiting what he likes - big and physical players.
  24. Vaya Verde Mezquino!
  25. Good articles about the realities these kids face in big time college football. There is a ton of talent out there. It looks like this is how we got Trice and Peagram.
