Unt Women Vs. Nicholls State
Mean Green Matt replied to Mean Green Matt's topic in Mean Green Basketball
The game has picked up a lot. UNT ball, down 5, with 14:45 left. -
If we get trough conference only dropping a few games, and then win the tournament, I don't see us any lower than a 13 or 14. The only OOC game left that I see a chance of losing is LSU. I don't think this years team will have as many losses as the UNT squad last year (I think it was 10 or 11). Hopefully we can catch a few breaks with the other conference tournaments as well.

Unt Women Vs. Nicholls State
Mean Green Matt replied to Mean Green Matt's topic in Mean Green Basketball
UNT down 11 at the half, 33-22. -
There are a couple hundred people here. UNT is down 21-9 with 5:11 left in the first half. Nicholls State is 2-5... Coach Stephens talked about the importance of Free throws in the pregame. We missed the first half of three straight 1 and 1's. Very ugly game so far.

First off, if you HAD used some paragraphs, it would be a little easier to give a direct, and orderly response to that load of garbage. But the fact you just went on an unsubstantiated rant, I really don't feel the need to directly respond (but I'll give it a shot below). Instead of wasting a lot of time replying to you though, I am going to head over to the women's basketball game to support my school. Yes, women's basketball. I may be wrong about this, but in the case you ARE from SMU and just over here to make trouble, I will leave you with this to dwell on: You did a good job of nitpicking all the little jabs you could take at UNT, but at least the greatest successes that we have achieved in our history as a program, we did not have to cheat to get there. Have we ever been ranked #2 in the country, of course not; but cheating is the only reason SMU was. No matter what SMU achieves in the future, they will NEVER be able to shed that black mark in their history. Thankfully SMU decided to grow a pair and schedule us in the future...it is in 2012 or 2014 when the series starts again...I can't wait, and when you come, I HOPE YOU HAVE TO SIT IN THE WINGZONE!!

Hank mentioned very close to the end that the Green Brigade would be in the middle of the student section. This would be a mistake. The band should be in the endzone, not taking away a whole section from the students, particularly in the middle of the student side. If we experience even a shred of success in that new stadium, they are going to need every student seat possible, becuase they will fill up quick. I would not be opposed to putting them on the edge of the student section though.

It is going to be a great day of football at Cowboys Stadium on Saturday. Ryan, Guyer, and then Euless Trinity all play. I'm thinking about heading out there...not sure if I can make it until September 10th with no football.

Is it out of the question for the season opener to be @ Tulsa?

Just because everyone was doing it does not mean that SMU deserved any less then they got. They had their chance to stop after they got caught, but kept doing it anyway. The death penalty rule was even fresh in their mind when they decided to keep the payroll going. SMU went down because of SMU, the media wars just got the momemtum going.

I watched it after the basketball game last night. SMU was even more slimy then I thought. They deserved everything they got not only because they cheated, but because they were stupid, and kept doing it over and over again. Also, does anyone else think that Eric Dickerson is one incredibly arrogant SOB. Good grief. Same goes for all the other morons that basically said, "well, we may have done it, but I'll never say a word about it." Sherwood Blount has never even talked on camara about it. They can all suck it, because at the end of the day everything that SMU accomplished was tarnished, and their actions damned their program for 25 years. I'll take the UNT football history ANY DAY over theirs. I can't wait to play them in a couple years.

It was really good to see us bend but not break when playing with a lead. They cut the lead down to 14 at one point, but we never let ourselves even get close to blowing it. If Ben Knox had thrown down that dunk the place would have gone absolutely bonkers...he had a few good rebounds as well...when Knox looks pissed off his game seems to improve some. When Hogans went down, it was more silent in the Super Pit than it was for the actually moment of silence for Francis Stroup. Attendance: 3177. Not bad during finals week. I saw highlights of the Ok. State game on ESPN earlier, and their arena was almost empty as well. UNT is not the only place that happens.

He is not a HS running backs coach, he is a HS Head Coach. There is a big difference. He has been at the college level before in the exact position we are hiring him for. I do not see the problem. Making the jump from HS to college is not as big of a jump if you move down to a position coach.

He was a running backs coach at the college level, and then took a HC job at the High School level.

There are three keys to winning women's basketball games: 1. Defense: We don't even need 94 feet of heat...seriously...47 feet of heat...wait, nevermind, 23.5 feet of heat will do. Let's work our way up to 94. 2. Free Throws: The great equalizer between the Mens game and the Womens game. A FT is a FT. When our player (I think Torru) went to the line tonight to shoot two, with UNT down two points, with .2 seconds left, the UTPA announcers said she was a 20% FT shooter on the year. I don't know if that is true or not, but that is what they said. Godbolt also missed two when she had a chance to tie the game (one airball). 3. Layups: Well, only a chosen few can dunk, so the war in the paint is won and lost with layups. We missed a bunch of layups just in the last 10 minutes. Most of them turned into momentum changers that allowed UTPA to get back to a two possession lead. I don't usually get too excited about WBB, but it is an off night for the Men, and it is a UNT sport, so I care by default. Very frustrating game...especially losing to a school like UTPA. We play Nichols State on Monday. We are undefeated against Southland teams at home this season so I fully expect a win. If not...well...Go Mean Green!

UNT goes to the line to shoot 2 FT's. .2 left in the game. Down 2. First FT is.....no good. UNT loses by 2....
-
Down 2. 1.8 seconds left. NT ball.
-
UNT down by 2 with around 20 seconds left...If we could make our layups and block out on FT's we would be winning right now.
-
UTPA is up 55-54 with just under 8 minutes left. The video on the UTPA website is free....if anyone is interested. Here is the link: UTPA Athletics This would be an abrupt step backwards after a good win on Wednesday if we can't pull it out.

Todd Dodge?

I would take Texas State over UTSA in a second. The name sounds better, San Marcos is close enough to San Antonio to gain that market anyway, and they have played more than zero downs of competitive football.

Unfortunately that is how most of our student body thinks right now...I just graduated in August and I have never understood why people don't just take a 2-hour study break and enjoy a basketball game. If Coach Mccarney goes out to the student organizations, and the dorms, and Greek life as he said during his press conference, I think we will see that excitement and passion spread over to the basketball attendance next year. There are two things that would significantly change the student culture as far as basketball attendance concerned. 1) having a successful football team get students excited early in the year, and this will spread to basketball. 2) Athletics actually marketing more than just the big games against OOC opponents. Not every student is like the students here on GMG.com that check MeanGreenSports all the time. Even people that pay NO attention know when the football games are, but that is not the case with basketball.

Awesome! We have a quality coach here. Hopefully his stay in Denton is longer than his stay at WKU! It sounds like he is going to be a target for BCS level gigs during his tenure...which makes me believe we got a good coach in Bowen.
