What I said was that the value athletics bring to the table is greater than band members [although some are on music scholarships] hence what they get from the university is greater. If you must work for something in order to receive it then its not free. So if you must mow your neighbors yard in order for him to wash your car then the car wash is not free. Finely, if an athlete must perform in exchange for an education then the education is not free.

So if your neighbor says he will wash your car if you mow his yard are you getting a free car wash? The service that athletics perform has a higher value that the others mentioned by you hence their quid pro quo is greater, but certainly not free.

Why risk injury? Players who plan on going into the NFL after the regular season often don't play in meaningless bowl games.

I agree, but if you push it back 30 days players who plan on entering the portal will just opt out of a bowl game.

UNT has 14 players in Portal. Arkansas has 25, Tulsa 23, Marshall 22 so it could be worse. Also Stone who transferred from North Texas to Marshall is on the move again.

Players are looking at sports as a job, and if you have an opportunity to significantly your income go for it, just like in the real world. Students attend college to learn how to improve their future financial opportunities and athletes are no different. There is no corporate loyalty to employees so why would expect them to be loyal to corporations . Players have learned from their coaches and administrators that its okay to leave for a better opportunity so I don't see how we can criticize them for it.
