  1. It was posted here a year or so ago.If memory serves it listed Texas D1 programs, size of student body, number of donors and total amount given. This may have been before indoor facility was constructed but this was a one and done deal of about $15 million. Our budget was a consideration in gaining entrance entrance into the AAC , not alumni giving. In addition, the new stadium constructed a decade ago just brought us up to speed , while the indoor practice facility gives us a leg up for the time being.
  2. Well, our alumni give the least of any other D1 program in Texas so I assume there will be no change when it comes to funding NIL.
  3. So does anyone know why we gave up the "Flying Worm"? With so many schools having eagles as a mascot it was the only one that separated us from the crowd. While I like our "eagle wings" they look nearly identical to the Oregon Ducks.
  4. One of the points of my question is that the transfer portal rule makes it much easier to recruit players from other programs, and whether that will adversely affect G5 programs more that P5 schools. Texas losing a few players will have a lot less impact than us having key players move up to P% when the opportunity presents itself. Also while we are just dipping our toes into the NIL water I assume schools loke SMU will be able to easily fund it while UNT will not, which puts us at a competitive disadvantage.
  5. How old is UTSA's program?
  6. Well they have over 40,000 students so I would tend to disagree with your Filipino friend. Now Cricket, that's another story.
  7. At present we are ranked 11th out of 14 in CUSA recruiting .If we were in AAC and with their existing membership North Texas would be ahead of only Navy.
  8. With the advent of both the transfer portal and NIL will the G5 programs evolve into basically a P5 farm system ?
  9. If memory serves we have ranked high in CUSA recruiting rankings for the past few years. However we have not been able to turn our recruiting success into wins on the field. Perhaps the best way for G 5's to go is follow SMU down the transfer portal as it certainly has worked for them.
  10. My bad. I meant the MVC, not the MWC ,and thought they had an offer from them.
  11. No. when I was in high school they were Arlington State. I think they made a big mistake moving to the WAC instead of the MWC.
  12. I saw that La. Tech had 4,000 in attendance for the North Texas game, drawing from the large metropolitan area of Rustin and student body of less that 20,000, and was wondering what our largest home crowd this year has been.
  13. At that point in time UTA was basically a commuter school like we were in the 60's and 70's.
  14. I don't think the UT system made that decision for UTA. It's always been my understanding that UTA pulled the plug on football.
  15. So UTA just joined the WAC. That's a shame as they are going backwards.Too bad they didn't get in the Missouri Valley Conference.
  16. USF is not. They don't have their own stadium and are still working on an indoor practice facility. I don't know about their basketball arena. They might have a problem with UCF. The president of USF blocked UCF's inclusion into CUSA for years. I think that SMU's biggest problem is that the Big 12 already has 2 small private schools and do they really want another one.
  17. I didn't say we couldn't play them them. That would not change. You would still see Georgia playing SE Louisiana or UNT. At present the NCAA only allows one win by 1A programs against 1AA schools to count towards bowl eligibility. I don't know if the same applies to P5 schools vs G5 programs. I am just advocating classification of all D1 football programs based upon athletic budgets which seems to be an equalizer. High schools do their classifications based upon their student enrollment which seems to work. I don't see why doing the same with college football based upon the size of their athletic budget wouldn't work as well.
  18. The P5 programs are going to spin off at some point. If I were king for a day I would separate all football programs into three tiers based upon their athletic budget. The big boys, lets say $ 50 million or over are tier 0ne's. Those programs $25 million to $ 50 million are tier Two's, and those below $25 million are tier threes. At present both the top tier [ Georgia vs Bama] and lower tier [NDSU vs MSU] have a playoff system. We just need to establish one for tier 2 programs [G5's] and move on with our lives.
  19. Texas came to Denton in mid 70's and we beat them in what seemed to be a full house.
  20. I can't recall in the last 20 years "several 6,000+basketball crowds" but will defer to your better memory. However , if you can count them then its not very many. Over this same time frame we hovered at 3,000 average attendance and some of those no name opponents are moving to AAC with us. When you can't draw 3,000 for a home game with UAB you have a problem which my result in our men's basketball coach moving on when the opportunity presents itself. No coach likes playing in a 10,000 seat venue with only 2,500 in attendance.
  21. Graham is new OC at West Virginia.
  22. They need a new conference and new coach for their basketball program. Regarding lack of interest by their fan's, those of us who live in glass houses shouldn't throw basketballs. With an average attendance hovering at less that 3,000 its hard for UNT to justify anything venue larger than 6,000. With a guestimated cost of around $100 million I wouldn't hold my breath for a new arena.
  23. They invested millions in a state of the art basketball venue that I would love to have at North Texas. The Sun Belt told them and UALR to fine\d new homes. The Trojans are moving the the Ohio Valley Conference, while the Mavs have applied to the Missouri Valley. If they are accepted I would think the move up in competition would warrant more interest and fan support. The administration just needs to step up to the plate and spend money on the right coach. There is no reason that they should not have a basketball program that is tops in the Metroplex.
  24. My grandson and I had lunch at Kenny's on Legacy today and talked to an older couple from NDSU. They had no tickets but drove from Bismark for the pep rally and before and after game events. I said to myself that they really need to get a life. Then I remember that while living in St. Louis 1968 to 1970 one year my wife and I drove to Lebanon Missouri and rented a motel room to watch North Texas play Tulsa on television in black and white, a distance of about 175 miles one way. We lost the game. She divorced me. I considered that a win.
  25. So back in the day the state of Texas looked around and noticed there were more qualified applicants to UT Austin, A & M, Tech, Houston , and UNT than they had dorm space for. However, Arlington State, East Texas State , West Texas State and Texas Women's University had excess housing. Rather than spend millions on new construction they encouraged these smaller schools to become part of a larger system with the idea that schools with no available housing would increase admission standards to the Mother Ship but admit students who could not meet the new standards to the smaller campuses within their system. West Texas State and East Texas State joined the Texas A&M system, Arlington State changed from the A & M system to the University of Texas System. I don't remember when Texas Western became UTEP but it was probably in this era. However, TWU refused to be buffaloed into joining UNT playing "the only women's university " card. The above is based upon the memory of a 79 year old geezer but should be close enough for government work. Regarding a Ft. Worth Campus , we may be a day late and a dollar short. UTA has a small branch in Cowtown and Tech just opened one on the same block. Assuming both Texas and A & M have a presence I don't know what we bring to the table. Also I would have thought Midwestern State would have been in our domain but them joining the Tech system just shows how little clout we have in Austin.
