I think the "Master Plan" has a 6,000+ seat arena across highway 35E where the rest of our sports facilities are.

UNT Athletics Strategic Plan Update- 2023
wardly replied to DentonLurker's topic in Mean Green Football
We didn't have the money then to be a SWC member then nor a P5 program now. When Fry was AD and Head Football Coach the only way the football program was financially viable was for then president Jitter Noland to illegally transfer money from funds designated for a new music building to athletics. When this was discovered Noland had to resign as president and was fortunate to escape criminal prosecution. I was on the North Texas Foundation Board in the early 90's . Our mission was two fold; to refuse donations of junk that people wanted to dump on us for a tax deduction, and to try to condense non designated contributions into one fund as well as convince donors of small designated funds to allow their contribution to go into this general fund. This non designated general fund was created so that our current president, Al Hurley, had a financial resource that he could access for speakers, seminars, etc. However to get a release of this money Dr. Hurley had to jump thru a lot of hoops, which I didn't understand until it was explained to me the history of Jitter Noland's abuse of the system while he was president. -

UNT Athletics Strategic Plan Update- 2023
wardly replied to DentonLurker's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, this looks more of a wish list than a strategic plan. For example, secure $35 million in gifts in four year with $10 million coming in both 2023 and 2024 seems more like spitballs on a wall so I assume there is a written marketing plan that is measurable with time lines .Goals and objectives must be reasonable and obtainable with a little pie in the sky. UNT has defined "where are we now" and"where are we going" [or want to go]. The hard part is "how are we going to get there, " which is the hard part and isn't shared in this communication. I would think that implementing a plan such as this is a big bite to chew and can only applaud the university for their efforts and wish them [actually us] well.- 40 replies

Actually their location in Dallas puts them in a better position, as our being 30 miles from both Dallas and FT. Worth hasn't equated to fans in the stands for our sports nor a ton of media coverage. I would compare the UTA program as a benchmark for comparison as to the success or failure of one at North Texas. Both T.C.U. and T.T. are in the top 25 with average attendance of 4,000. I have been unable to find DBU's or UTA's. However with DBU's small enrollment and location I doubt that its much regardless of their on the field success. Also UTA doesn't support basketball so I guess there probably isn't much interest in baseball. I would like to think "build it and they will come" but that hasn't worked out for our football program. I also would like to think having a highly successful men's basketball program would increase our average attendance of 4,000 but it didn't. In summary, for the size of our student body and the thousands of graduates in DFW our athletic programs don't garner much interest by either.

So which one of us is going to write the $10 million +check to create a venue for a sport that will draw 10's of 10's? Being in DFW hasn't helped attendance in any of our other ports so why does anyone think baseball will?

UTA hires new basketball coach KT Turner

I would be very skeptical of UTA bringing back football. There seems to be no interest in their administration and the low turnout by the students in a recent referendum doesn't support this rumor. -

UNT Basketball Team honored by Denton City Council

Where's the parade? -
LSU Women's basketball team had 9 players transfer in this year and on the NCAA tournament . We may not like this change in college sports but it is what it is. I am so old that I remember when college football players played both ways , ran the single wing, and wore leather helmets. Oh well.

Breaking: Tylor Perry enters transfer portal

That would be my bet. Best to him! He seems like a fine young man. -
Unlike football, non conference basketball games are normally scheduled by the school's head basketball coaches.

It's hard not to have a distinction between P5 and G5 programs when UT has an athletic budget of over $120 million and La. Monroe is less that $20 million. In my perfect world athletic programs would be classified based upon their budget. and separated into 3 divisions, class 1, 1A, and 1AA . UNT would be a 1A program, which would have their own football playoff system like 1AA does now.

What do you mean "selling out for the money"? You are telling us that you would turn down a job in your chosen field in a location that was acceptable to you and your family at 3 times your present income guaranteed for 6 years. Right.......
-
Difficult for UNT to justify spending millions of dollars to build out an end zone in stadium that seats 30,000 and has average attendance of only 20,000. I don't know what our demand is for suites, but if there is one then adding them along with needed ancillary athletic facility square footage might make some sense, not that anything regarding R.O.I in athletics does.
-
Just asking but why do you think Hodge won't go with MAC to Tech?
-
They are a package deal in that Arizona State makes the decision for both of them. If the Sun Devils decide Arizona will go with them. However the opposite is not the case. Arizona by itself is not that attractive as the Phoenix market is the key.
-
From what I have read over the past few months is that while Arizona is open to the Big 12, Arizona State is not,and they are a package deal. The TV networks want the Phoenix market with Tucson being just an add on.

Has anyone ever seen this called before? I'm 80, watched a fare amount of hoops in my day, and don't remember ever seeing this called.
