w.k. does not begin conference play until next year.
-
their is no money for a buyout. all our financial efforts are going towards a new stadium. please rembember that our entire athletic program is woefully underfunded. t.d. will be expected to put "more" wins in the column next year, and be "competative" in conference play. if not, it may be a different story. its going to be very to recruit quality players to a 3&21 program, but i think he will get at least 4 years to go from worst to 1st in conference. on a personal note, i am afraid he is a one dimentional coach who knows offense but little else.

What I Think Is Needed To Have A Better Team
wardly replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
this team is worse than last years, and i see no improvement. we have only been competative against w.k., offense scoring less and defense giving up more, plus for the 2nd straight year we have no kick return coverage. this is a very bad team. -
i have been attending n.t. football games since my freshmen year, 1961, and this is the worst college team i have ever seen. while the offense can sometimes score, the defense is terrible, and as my army drill instructor used to say, our kickoff coverage is "worst than terriable". last year t.d. inherited a defense with 9 returning starters who gave up 25 points a game in 06 and turned them into the worst defense in nation in 07, giving up 50 points per outing. i see no inprovement in defense, and have concluded that while t.d. may know offense, he is over his head when the other team has the ball. i realize that some of our players are young, but they are not going to be but 9 months older when the 09 season starts. in addition, how do you recruit above average players to a program that will have gone 3and21 in 2 years under t.d., and 9and59 the past 5 years?
-
we have yet to beat fau, and probably won't this week, because after we score we are required by rule to kick off. since td became head coach, we have evolved into the worst kickoff coverage team in football, and it's only getting worse. last week we gave up 200 kick return yards to a glorified 1aa team. i think our best option is to punt, either on or off the field.

while not condoning the use of drugs, i wonder if the percentage of players testing positive doesn't mirror the gereral student body.

you would think that a well coached team, regardless of the overall talent, could play just one facet of the game well. we are near the last in everything.

Now That The Athletic Fee Finally Passed
wardly replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
its great to have a new football stadium, but the truth is that the entire athletic program is significantly underfunded, and does not make a profit. there are almost no discretionary funds, and untill the athletic department gets on solid financial ground, it has no business adding another non revenue producing sport. its just not sound business. -

why add another underfunded program? s.m.who dropped baseball 40 yeats ago because its a money pit. -
if some corporation does not buy naming rights, i would like to see joe greene and abner haynes honored. if joe was the best, abner was the bravest. you might want to see the movie "the express" to get an ibea of what haynes went through. i was a freshman in 61' . while north texas classrooms were intergrated, the dorms were not, and the city of dentor was segregated. that ment restaurants, theaters, etc.

t.d. should be able to recruit receivers/q.b's, and probably running backs. his problem will be linemen on both sides of the ball and d/backs. look at tx. tech.

the present a.d. or football coach world not be responsible for the failure of the students to tax themselves for a new stadium. it would just afirm the the students don't want it and the graduates won't pay for it. the historical problem goes back decades and rest on the shoulders of previous university presidents and regents. if you can't do it right, don't do it at all. wihtout a new stadium, we are in an arms race that we can't compete in. should the students say no, the my voice would be to drop the program rather than move back to 1aa or continue to be 119th out of 119 1a programs. there are only so many beans in the pot, and my money would go to the basketball program. having said this, lets not get the cart before the horse. we will know the future of our athletic program this saturday.

How Ignorant Are People Towards Unt Football !
wardly replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
you can't blame our drop to 1aa on the "wicked" administration. life is "what do you want, what do you need and what are you willing to pay for". at that time, 1a required 15,000 butts in the seat in a 30,000 seat stadium. we didn't average 15,000 during hayden fry's tenure, and the only way we were able to meet stadium reguirements was when a grad gave $1 million for 10,000 bleacher seats. since my freshman year of 61, there have been no major improvements to the football facalities untill the new ad building, and none to the stadium. the problem is money, or lack thereof. n.t. grads want some one else to buy them fine wine when they are only willing to pay for ripple. if r.v. can pull a new stadium off in the economic enviroment, he can probably walk on water. -
its just like the market. someday it will bottom out and begin to come back. so will we.
-
either we did't realize how far down in the well we were, or t.d. is over his head. i think the former rather than the latter. a former head coach told the that t.d. will have little problem recruiting receivers/q.b.'s. the hard sell will be linemen/d.b.'s. look at how long it has taken texas tech to get a decent defense to complement its high powered offense. he has a 5 year contract. let's let it play out.

f.a.u has a city owned soccer stadium that the owls play in which seats 10,000 or so. while they also are trying to build a new stadium, no ground breaking yet. however, their staff is able to recruit. let give dodge 3/5 years to rebuild.

i don't think we are ranked much higher than utah state. are you unhappy with our o.c.? before you continue to bash d.d., go back to the end of hayen fry's era and do the following: 1] how many head coaches since fry? 2] how many winning seasons? 3] how many conference championships? 4] how many bowl games?
-
basketball schedules, unlike football, are created by the head basketball coach, not the athletic director.
-
we are about 116 out of 121 1a programs, so i think not. wardly

student athletic fees should be an indiciator as to the interest/support for athletics from the student body. if so, then ours is very low, which begs the question, " who are we trying to build a new stadium for?" it appears that the students don't want it, and the alumni won't pay for it. appears to be a formula for failure.
-
our team may be the "mean green," but our grads are the " lean green" when it comes to giving. in addition, our student body shows no interest in contributing to athletics via student fees. this history of non giving, coupled with our past idenity as a teacher/comute school, and no positive direction until recently from administration , is why our athletic program is underfunded and most facalities outdated. money can solve these problems, but it musy be a grass roots movement, as i see no boone t. pickens on the horizon.
