You guys apparently are correct regarding when the usage of "Mean Green" as a reference to our entire football team instead of just the defense.I don't know if that applied to the basketball teams as well.I was in St. Louis 68/70 and Indianapolis 72/74 so I missed these seasons. However I did contribute to the athletic department when Fry was AD/HC receiving a paper weight engraved with North Texas State University and had a flying worm in center above "MEAN GREEN". I just looked at it and realized that Fry did promote the nickname.I also got the ugliest green polyester jacket i have ever seen that should of had a no smoking sign on it. In addition I got a flying worm helmet that was actually a working telephone that I lost in a move 25 years ago. Regardless I think we can agree that our nickname is unique even if we don't always play to it and wish that we had kept the flying worm which really popped in electric green.

A lot of us old timers didn't want to make a change from NT to UNT. He went through 4 or 5 presidents while he was AD, I each who had their own idea as to how to market North Texas.In addition his budget was pocket change. You can thank Rick and C.Dan Smith for your new football stadium.

Opps! Jim Hobdy created the UNT Battle Flag in 1986 and WAS NOT involved with Rick Spear's design of the flying worm which was adopted by Hayden Fry and used during his tenure.My bad. It is a shame that we didn't stick with it and it certainly separated us from any other eagle mascot. However if you google history of Mean Green knickname you will find the credit for its universal usage by UNT attributed to Rick Villareal, not Hayden Fry.

I don't think Hayden did this. Perhaps you could provide some reference as I can't recall the term "mean green " applying to our team as a whole until the 2000's. Yes the eagle is our mascot and mean green is the nickname of our team. Also I believe Jim Hobney [sic] was also involved in the creation of the flying worm bet can't exactly remember how. Maybe you know.

Rick told me he changed the nickname from Eagles to Mean Green because of all the local/regional high schools that had an "eagle" as their mascot.This is first time I have seen Mean Green on our helmets and I really like it .

Go to YOUTUBE and request Army/UNT highlights. They had them a few hours after the game yesterday. I don't know about the entire game.

Three trips into the red one. Army stop on 2 yard line, interceptions inside the 15. Zero points.

I would love too, but at 81 with severe spinal stenosis [narrowing of the spine in lower back]I have chronic pain and just can't walk that far from parking. The last time we played at Army[ we won ] I took my 15 year old grandson. Great trip!

In my opinion UNT is just a 1/2 a step behind Tulane and Memphis, and probably Army. However I think Morris will light it up against the Black Knights and if we can get just a little help from our defense we have a decent chance to win. Of course I voted for Harris so what do I know.

UTA is playing UNT Dallas instead of UNT Denton.

Saturday we host Army, who is an undefeated top 20 team. I don't remember us hosting a team ranked this highly before, the weather is predicted to be sunny in low 70's, and we have no reason other than apathy not to fill the stadium.

I really think we can beat Army if their starting QB doesn't play.If he does itmight be a different story. No rain would help us as well.

If he is able to play he will.If he is and they don't its because Army thinks they don't need him to beat us, which they do.

I can only assume that our history of attendance pushed UNT to the top.

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but why is not TCU hosting this event? Anyone have a clue? I mean we play no men's sporting events in Ft. Worth that I am aware of.
