even if we could aford him, which we can't, why would you hire him or leach or any coach fired for abusing his players? where is woody hayes when you need him? -

it would take 10% of our annual athletic budget just for leaches salary, plus another 10% for his staff. get real. -
probably the only reason that you let dodge go after his 6th loss and make canales the interim hc is if you are considering him for that position. otherwise, get thru the season as best you can and then off with their heads including deloach. a new broom sweeps clean.

This To Me Is More Heartbreaking Than Embarassing
wardly replied to pogWo4life's topic in Mean Green Football
in hind site, no, it was not worth it. it was a bad hire, pure and simple. however, for the 1st 2 or 3 years, td did not have the full number of scholarships to give due to an academic mess he inherited. if i had a mullinan, i would 1]have hired him 2] not allowed him to bring his southlake staff with him, which was r.v.' biggest mistake, and 3] would have fired him last year. now, we will end this season with 6 years and maybe a dozen wins going into a new stadium and the shelf bare of any quality player depth. we need, in my opinion, to double our budget to $500,000 and hire a head coach with a proven track record of successful recruiting in texas. -

bull shit! when td was hired, you couldn't find a fan or sports reporter that didn't think it was a great hire. didn't turn out that way, but the only people who havn't made hiring errors are those who have never hired anyone. rv is same man who hired our mens basketball coach, a successful program that is still poorly suported by nt fans. before rv, the only new sports faciality we had built since my freshman year of 1961 was the old adm.now ticket office building when hayden fry was athletic dir.[ the super pit is considered a multi purpose building.]i don't see rv got as much built with no construction budget and alumni who are mainly all mouth and no money. -
if memory serves, we fired dd a few days after he has released from the hospital after being admitted for a suspected heart attack, so i doubt if rv is going to cut td any slack. the injuries are significate, but bottom line is when we hired dodge we thought we were getting a t-bone and enden up with chicked fried steak.

i have been following program since my freshman year 61', and the only 2 coaches that i can remember leaving by choice are fry and moore. all others were fired, including corkey nelson and darrell dickey. so much for loyalty.

who ever replaces td must have the same offensive scheme or something simular, otherwise it will take a few more years of looseing to flush out our existing players. i don't know the name of the oc at houston, but he would be high on my list. they have shown an ability to recruit texas players and win with an excitihg offense. also, he must be afordable. if we payed dd and td $250,000, then that is what was in the budget. i'm think we probably could afford more at this point, but i don't know how much.for the sake of argument, lets assume we can up the base to $4000,000 x 5 years = $2 million. who can we get for this amount?[ the head coach at sam houston was a finalist for the houston job.]some of the names listed are just not affordable, so if we are going to get real with this exercise, lets eliminate those who are not and expand those who are. i also would eliminate coaches who were fired from their previous job, but thats just me. i tend to compair them with my x-wife.
-
i don't know if being a oc immediately qualifies you as head coach material or not. dd was oc at smu before joining nt, and my top replacement for td would be the oc at houston.when it becomes mathematically impossibled to win 7 games, i would fire td &let mc coach the rest of season.we must get someone in who can recruit. for a successful head high school coach, td did a terrible job of bringing in new talent.
-
jerry moore replaced fry, went 11&11 in 2 years, got the texas tech job, was fired, and has had a great career at app. state. those are only 2 head football coaches since my freshman year of 61' that moved up instead of out. can you name a basketball coach that did the same? we should name our new football stadium "the boneyard".

agreed! our players and coaches don't know how to win because they havn't. after 5 years and only 10 wins, we have become to accept close games as some kind of a moral victory, even if we don't win them.in fact, we were happy with a 25 point lose at clemson because we had the ball 42 minutes. when td was hired, i thought it was a good hire. however, he brought his high school staff with him, which proved to be a disaster. i was a supporter of dd, but agreed that it was time for a change. its time for another one. as long as we set our standards low, we will meet them. i am not even upset with our recent loss. i am afraid that i have reached the point of acceptance, and am approaching "i just don't care anymore". someone throw me a lifeline, quick.
-
at least we agree on the main issue, that our depth was damaged with loss of 3 starters in 1st game of season.
-
a lot depends on mt. west. if they stay with 10 teams, then we are probably stuck in the belt for the forseeable future. if they expand to 10, lets hope a combination of utep, smu, tulsa, or houston fill those 2 slots, creating 2 vacancies in cusa west. looking forward to report coming out of our athletic department soon.
-
watching marshall vs west virginia. i like the herd's uniforms.
-
any way you "spel" it, 3 starters hurt and out for the season in 1st game is tough on a program with limited depth. sorry if my reasoning "loost" you, but money games are usually against bigger, stronger teams where the risk of injury is greater.
-
still, a costly outing at clemson. these $ games are necessary, but we can't afford to loose 3 starters for season in 1st game. may come back to haunt us.
-
do they still make geritol? actually i fondly remember valium as a substitute for all that ails you. i do follow and actually play golf, but have never gotten into tennis because of the celebrations. i also don't like tatoos and taunting, but hey, i'm just a n.t. fan of 49 years who is tired of loosing. when we are 10&2 instead of 2&10 then i probably won't care if a receiver spins on his head and fire shoots out of his ass after he scores. winning cures a lot of ills. until then, pass the geritol.
-
what nt needs is to get rice down and beat the snot out of them, just to prove to themselves that they can do it. we are desperate to be on the giving end of a blowout instead of the receiving end.
-
when you have only won 10 games in 5 years, you can't afford players whose selfish actions [look at me] cause a flag that leads to your opponents scoring another touchdown. regarding our ranking of 129th which includes 1aa schools, it seems about right to me. why is this negative? untill we actualy beat someone other that western ky.,perhaps we should quit whinning about our sargin ranking and "unfair" celebration calls and just play football.i am just tired of excuses for our being the worst team in the worst 1a conference. i guess that is my beef.
-
is this the same hot dog that cost us a touchbown by his selfish "pose" in end zone after scoring t.d.?

it includes 1aa schools as well, which means that a number of them are ranked higher than us because we probably couldn't beat them. jackson state and s.dakota st. come to mind.i have found his ranking to be very accurate over the years. don't understand your "apples to apples" coment.
-
my concern also. not to belabor the point, but in fact, to belabor the point, we had ball for 42 minutes and only scored 10 points, while clemson scored 35 points in only 18 minutes. i just can't get confortable with those sats.however, when your program has only won 10 games in the past 5 years, i guess we are all looking for a silver lineing. rice should be a fair test of our teams ability, as should army. middle tenn.,troy, and k-state are probably out of reach, but the rest of conference games appear winnable.

Key Play Of The Game.........gosh I Hate That Rule
wardly replied to calvin's topic in Mean Green Football
it will be interesting to see if he starts this week. also, his "pose" was not a celebration. see clemson for flag free example. -
we played them in boise 11/26/94 in a 1aa playoff game and lost 24 to 20.mitch maher was our qb. we beat them 30-27 in 96, lost 14-17 in 97, won 21-13 in 98,won 17-10 in 99, and lost 59 to zip in 2000. since then our programs have gone in different directions.
