abner haynes, without a doubt. i have lived long enough to have seen some great backs at north texas, including a few not mentioned, but he had the break away speed and moves like no other.as a side note, he was our 1st black player in a time of segreation, and received death threats when he enrolled. a denton native from fred moore high [the dragons], he was not allowed in local movie theaters, restaurants, etc.,. i have always said that if joe greene was the best, abner haynes was the bravest.just a old mans opinion.

hope you are right. however, with smu's experience in wac, would they move to mwc if invited?

If Offered, Should We Join The Mountain West Conference?

they may decide that houston/dfw are out of their footprint. i would expect utah state to get serious consideration, as well as utep. san jose st., idaho, and mnsu are sol. hope i am wrong. the loss of both smu, houston,or utep opens up 2 slots in cusa west, which is where i want north texas to be.
-
or, the mwc could add utah st. and utep and forget about dfw market.

Projected 2011 North Texas Coaching Staff
wardly replied to thecoachingtree's topic in Mean Green Football
coaching profession is based upon buddy system. i would expect coach mac to surround himself with coaches he knows and trusts. also, a new broom sweeps clean. question: does anyone know his start date? i assume florida going to a bowl game. hope he gets his release and can start putting together a staff and recruiting this week. -
Rv-How Am I Supposed To Get Behind Dan Mccarney
wardly replied to UNTMike81's topic in Mean Green Football
this is just an opinion, but coach chico was basically a fallback position if we we unable to hire a proven head coach. most on this board initially wanted an experienced head coach, and this is what we got. coach chico was given a small window to showcase his coaching skills, and certainly made the most of it, which should help him in his quest to become a head coach. what hurt him was the dodge disaster, which forced the decision makers to go for safe. they just could not take another chance as too much riding on outcome of this hire. while mccarney would not have been my preference, be brings a lot to the table and has had some measure of success in a difficult setting at iowa state. remember that we have had only 5 winning seasons in the past 30 years, and have won only a dozen or so games the last 6 years. even with a new stadium, which only gets us up to speed, we are not exactly a " chick magnet". my suggestion is that all of us put aside our differences regarding the selection of mccarney and continue to support north texas athletics. who knows. we may have just hired another hayden fry. -
Does Any One Know Rick Villarreal's Email Address?
wardly replied to MeanGreen01's topic in Mean Green Football
dr. rawlngs is very involved with athletics, especially football , and even more so since we invested $78 million in a new stadium. this decision was not a unilateral decision by rick, which has not always been the case in past hires. the following is just an opinion, but it has always appeared to me that historically the athletic department was basically left alone with not much accountability. no longer. this is not a reflection on the job rick has or has not done, but rather good business on the administration's part as our athletic budget continues to grow.i am a big fan of ricks, and am amazed at what he has accomplished in updating our facalities in such a short period of time. i entered ntsu in 61', and until rick arrived the only new facality was athletic administration building constructed during hayden frys tenure.[ the supper pit is actually considered a multi-purpose building, has its own supervisor, and does not report to the athletic department.]in summary, the decision to hire coach mac was a collective effort, and the only people who have never made a hiring mistake are those who have never hired anyone. while i would have gone a different direction in my coaching choice, i support their decision and look forward to a new era as we move forward. -
talent not there. canales did a hell of a job. start rebuilding next year with new coach.
-
i don't know why you would make such a statement, and would like to know what specifically you think he has been dishonest about. i graduated in 66, have known most of the a.d.'s in the past 40 years, and combined they have not accomplished what rick has during his tenure.

if we are not the doormat, you could have fooled me. overall, we have lost more conference games that won in a 10 year period. you are right. we should and i think will be at the top again in the net 3 to 5 years.

La Tech Fans Discussing Future Conference Possibilities
wardly replied to gangrene's topic in Mean Green Football
lla. tech fans live in a world all to their own. i think they would rather go independent in football and put all other sports in southland than return to belt as long as ul monroe is a member. they seem to have no problem with ull. new mexico state is in process of evaluating athletic program. their football is actually in much worse shape than ours, money is tight in the entire state, and they could even consider dropping down to 1aa. i think they would be welcomed back to the belt, but at 600+ mile to closest other member, unt, and a small fan base in a small state, they bring nothing to the table. having said that, i would be supportive of both schools rejoining the belt to get us to 12 teams,2 divisions, and conference championship game.but i would only admitt nmsu if they brought la. tech with them. just a old mans opinion. -
The Future New Sbc & With Nat'l Media Neg. Perception

3rd in a row. tcu beat them 1st bowl, lost 2nd. -
i don't think lsu would be a guality win. they have nothing this year. also, we probably would have a better chance at nit bid than ncaa at large.

The Future New Sbc & With Nat'l Media Neg. Perception

works for me, with utsa and tsu as back up. either 10 or 12 schools is a good number, but 14 is a bridge too far. -
we are in violent agreement.

explain "culture of north texas and how it relates to big 12/8 schools". [also, you didn't ask for contex. you just dismissed input without any reason.] is unt " a special needs " university?
-
one of them is my best friend and former roomate at north texas who moved to okc years ago, jerk.

i have talked to several big 8/12 fans about mccarney, and everything they said about him was positive. the feeling i got was that we would be very lucky to get him. regarding next year, whoever comes in will have little to work with, as the cupboard is basically bare.

i would think if it's coach chico you would announce it before k.state game, not after, unless he is your fallback choice. also,in my opinion, this is just not ricks decision alone. dr. rawlings is very involved in the selection process, and i don't see him as a rubber stamp kind of guy. he also will be involved in our athletic program more than any other previous president, and will demand accountability.after dodges failure, this hire has ricks career ridding on it, so i expect a safe choice with no susprises. again, this is just my 2 cents worth.

Article On Canales And The Coaching Search
wardly replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
i doubt if all 4 are interested in us, but hope at least 2 are. i think that the job of our consultant is to get a buyer and a seller together. i would expect consultant to present about 3 to 5 coaches who fill the bill to rick and dr. rawlings , who would then interview and make a collective decision. other than coach chico, i don't have a clue who will be on the short list. firefighting rick has convienced me that kragthorpe would be a good hire, and while ul didn't work out, he did a great job at tulsa. we all seem to be a bunch of kids at christmas wondering what will be under our tree. personally, i want a daisy mae red ridder bb gun like the one i got when i was 7. ist thing i shot was my 5 year old brother on the foot. he had really pissed me off, for reasons i can't recall. but i digress. happy thanksgiving to all.
