  1. on paper a bumblebee can't fly, and stephens can't coach.
  2. another problem is that we are trying to make our home schedule more attractive, and its difficult to get the bigs to come to denton. we can probably get all the road games we want, but it would be great if we could get some 2 for 1's.
  3. i know its been a long time, but i could have sworn i saw him introduced at senior day in uniform. oh well, i'm an old man with apparently failing memory who can't spell.
  4. thanks for clarification. also,if memory serves,Helwig's son was on the bb team under Trilli. don't know if he was on scholarship.perhaps you do.
  5. simon was "pushed out", jake leaving was mutual according to what helwick told me at the time. i am getting my information based upon facts as i know thenm to be. however, i have slept since then.
  6. actually, our former bb coach who is now at ill.state quit , as did fb coach matt simmon because of a.d.craig helwick [sic?] insane oc schedule. he basically was funding the athletic dept. with body bag games in both sports. i don't see jj moving west, as his recruiting base seems to be more s.e. based. the troy bb coach just finished his 29th season there, so perhaps jj will stay put. however, if a major conference has an opening in the s.e., then i'm sure he would be interested.
  7. a senior team should not lose with a 7 point lead in final 1:50, so its hard for me to blame the refs.we committed 3 fouls and 2 turnovers during this time.[ triston missed a layup, and hogans a slam dunk in 1st half as well as well.] biggest difference i saw was in previous games when triston drove to middle and there was contact, a blocking foul was almost always called. in ular game it was reversed, with charging called on triston 2 or 3 times. i thought this was a major difference which hurt him and our team. however, it was our game to lose, and we did. we just ran out of gas at the end.
  8. i agree. however, if we were to add a basketball only school i would vote for uta. they are building a new arena, have a good baseball program, and would give us a natural rival, something we have never had.
  9. i sugested to rv several years ago that we "cover" the upper deck during games to reduce seating and make the arena more intimate, but quite honestly he had bigger fish to fry. i don't know what cost would be, but it would bring fans closer together.
  10. your comments are appreciated! regarding the band, most bb bands i have seen [sons went to arkansas, auburn, and uab] tend to dress down and just have fun.[ my favorite is the RICE m.o.b.]the cheerleaders share time with the UNT DANCE team, and spent most of their time entertaining the student section. i have court side seats, so i can't comment on the lighting. a jumbotron would be great, and perhaps its something that we could work on in the future. i don't know if you are aware of the fact that the super pit is a university multipurpose faciality with its own management, and not under our athletic department. we schedule time for it like all other university departments. this was only way state would fund it, as the state of TEXAS will not pay for athletic sticks and bricks. in summary, hope you and your friends come back next year.
  11. excellent summary! thanks for your thoughtfull answer, which answered my original question,at least for me.
  12. lets not get our panties in a bunch.i have a hard time believing that your reguest will not be accomodated. the goal is to sell club seats, not piss off long time supporters such as yourself. just send rick an e-mail explaining your situation and requesting clairfication. i assure you that he will respond in a positive manner.[rick.villarreal@unt.edu
  13. thanks for the heads up regarding this program. it was the most positive interview i have ever seen regarding unt athletics, and i go back to 3 channel black and white tv with rabbit ears and no remote.
  14. then who should we compair ourselves against? again, just asking.
  15. we averaged same the 2 years when we went to ncaa's, so i tend to discount our recent slump as reason for poor attendance. also, when we won 4 belt football championships in a row i don't remember a spike in basketball attendance ,so i tend to discount that logic also. it just appears to me that the 4th largest university in the state should be compaired to other large state schools, such as houston and tech. susprisingly we do about as well as houston, but not in ballpark when it comes to tech or utep. perhaps our benchmark should be utsa and uta. those schools are of simular size, either are or were commuter schools, play in a conference simular to ours in basketball, and are in large metropolitian markets. it would make us look good, but certainly is not where we want to be.again, just an old mans opinion.
  16. but we are not in cusa, and won't be as long as smu is. we are in the belt, and our real number is 3,500. if playing in the belt hurts bb attendance, what will it do to football in our new stadium? probably question for another day.
  17. which bodes another question; who should the 4th largest university in texas with 36,000 students compair their bb attendance to? the belt? tt,uh, sfa, utsa, uta?
  18. probably very true, but that doesn't mean that the bb program turned a profit that year. it probably just lost less.
  19. i don't begrudge jj a dime, as he has built an excellent program the past 10 years. however, attendance still hovers at about 3500 per game. for the sake of discussion, assume that 1,500 are students, and 2,000 are paying customers[i realize there is a student athletic fee, but i'm talking about gate receipts]. how much can north texas afford to pay a head coach? should it matter? with all the cost cuts in higher education in Texas, should athletics be held to a different standard? bottom line:is it ok to pay big bucks to a head coach whose program appears to loose money? just asking.
  20. i went to texas/n.texas bb game in austin a few years ago. they have same problem. one side yells "texas", other "longhorns", and then it just peters out like our "north-texas" chant . i understand the problem, but don't know the answer.
  21. how about one from the 60's;"hell no, we won't go!"
  22. isn't disgrace a little harsh? its not like we are cheating, throwing games or shaving points. we are just not playing well. this happens in all sports to all teams.
  23. i have not been there in person, but heard that HOG BAR has c&w music, and free drinks on fridays for all toothless women. word is that you need to arrive early to beat the crowd. however, this could just be another urban mith.
  24. should be able to drive and fine room for less than $100 per nite. best option would be to contact cooper jones at athletic department. he has a number of rooms blocked off at tourny rate, which offers slight savings.
  25. rv may be a lot of things to a lot of people, but he is a yes man to none.he has accomplished more in his tenure than all other unt ad's combined, and you don't do that by not standing up for your convictions.
