  1. Bleacher report, for what its worth, listed 10 head football coaches that they felt were ready to move up to next level. Of the 10, 5 were from the Sun Belt, plus Dykes from La. Tech.
  2. FYI, i mailed R.V. the UNT desigh from mghelments.com. suggest you do the same if you have any new ideas.
  3. R.V.'s opinion is not to use initials, such as U.N.T.,U.A,B,U.C.F. ,etc. He feels that most people from other parts of the country might not know what it stands for, as we are still known primarily as a regional university. life is a comprise, and i have seen several attractive blends of S.O.W. and NORTH TEXAS posted. might i suggest that the designers of these logos send them to Rick for his consideration at rick.villarreal@unt.edu. it will do more good than singing to the choir.
  4. best i remember is in high 60's or low 70's during D.D.'s run.
  5. i assume Coach has met with Tony Mitchell. not puting Odoh at same level, but if we really want him i have a hard time believing that we have not met with him. if not, then he doesn't fit , and let him go anywhere he wants to. to hold him to a l.o.i. if he wants out will come back to bite you. i don't care if he goes to LSU if he has a chance.
  6. UTSA comes to mind, but thats a stretch.also, now that CUSA has schools in DFW,Houston, and San Antonio, i don't think UTEP would want to move west.
  7. NMSU is sol unless ODU turns down offer to join CUSA and MTSU accepts. then the Belt might reach out. otherwise, the Aggies are in the same boat as Idaho.
  8. just put "NORTH TEXAS" on one side and SOW on the other. that would solve the complaints and look, well, different,or strange. it certainly would gain attention, or ridicule. this suggestion came from the University of Maryland.
  9. historically all of our sports have been underfunded. this is in the process of change since the new student fee, but i just don't think that we can afford an expensive non revenue producing sport whose attendance will be numbered in the hundreds, not thousands.
  10. as a reasonable person[i think] i stand corrected, and appreciate your coments. however, i would put a dedicated basketball practice and indoor football/soccer facilities ahead of a baseball park.there are just so many beans in the pot. just an old mans opinion.
  11. idon't consider the lack of another non revenue sport a flaw. if we added mens baseball we probably would have to add at least one other womens sport. the bottom line is that the only sport we have that produces somewhat of a positive is mens football, and i doubt it is that much. our mens basketball program eats up $800,000+ in coaching expentures, draws 4,000 average, of which about 1,500 are students[just a guess], which doesn't leave a lot of income when your base is about 2,500. SMU spends more money and gets less out of it than any university i know, and even they can't afford mens baseball. i can't justify $7 million or so dollars to build a baseball park whose fans will number about the same as our womens basketball attendance, plus the cost of coaches and scholarships.strike 3 for me.
  12. i agree. i think ODU needs to look hard at the cost of nearly doubleing the size of their football stadium. frankly, i would have included MTSU for the Nashville /Tennessee market instead of La. Tech, who brings little to the table.
  13. time zone and travel. closest MWC cities would be El Paso and Albuquerque, and most games start past my bedtime.
  14. good point. both Idaho and NMSU will probably move down to the Big Sky. however, with the loss of the other 5 football playing schools to the MWC and CUSA, and with UTA moving to the Sun Belt, who and what is left in the WAC?
  15. i think the additions of ODU, which untill recently i thought was a brand of bourbon, and UNC/Charlotte were to pacify Marshall and ECU. ODU will need 2 years to move up to 1a football, and Charlotte will not field a team until 2013. in the short term, either Tulane or La. Tech will probably play in the Eastern Division to create two 6 team divisions. i would think La. Tech would draw the short straw as the new kid on the block.
  16. it looks like we finally will get what we have wished for: a national conference with a regional division apparently made up of UTEP,UTSA,RICE,TULSA,TULANE[i think La.TECH will go east], and NORTH TEXAS. major programs fans go to watch their team play regardless of who their opponent is. mid-major programs such as UNT go to watch who their team is playing. we now have no excuses not to increase attendance based upon our competation.
  17. Idaho is unloved and unwanted, and will probably drop back to the Big Sky. NMSU is geographically undesirable, has financial problems in athletics, and unless the Belt wants an 11th football program for some strange reason will probably knock on the Big Sky's door as well. my feeling is that the Belt stays at 10 football programs which allows them to schedule 3 paydays.adding UTA allows them to have 12 basketball programs and keep 2 divisions. i think Benson has done the best he can do with what he has to work with, and wish the Belt well.
  18. i find it interesting that while UTSA is beating its chest about moving to CUSA, nothing simular is coming from UNT,FIU, or La. Tech. i assume we are waiting for the official announcement.
  19. UTA gets the Belt in the DFW market, and they have a good baseball program.if they loose UNT and FIU as expected, they are down to 8 football programs. the addition ot Georgia State and Texas State gets them back to 10 football programs plus UALR. looks like UTA would be the 12th basketball program in a big market.sleepers are NMSU, which i think is out of the Belt's footprint, and UNC @ Charlotte, which i believe has pushed back addition of a football program to 2105.
  20. lets just get a "Dixie Cup". its in the budget.
  21. with the loss of BYU,Utah,TCU,SDSU, and BSU ,and probable addition of SJSU and USU, the new MWC is basically the old WAC, if not worst.
  22. they really wanted UNC/Charlotte instead of La. Tech or UTSA. also, i thought UTEP was moving to MWC.
  23. actually,he quit.he refused to play all the "body bag" road games that Helwig[sic?] kept scheduling for big paydays. the A.D.did the same thing to coaches Simon and Dickey, which is how he funded the athletic program.
