Me thinks there may be trouble in paradise.Tony no showed for Friday's practice after Thanksgiving ,and does not look, act, or play like a happy camper. Bedford may be a good coach but not have the personel for his system.I thought we had gotten past the stage of hiring assistant coaches instead of experienced head coaches, such as Women's Basketball and Men's Football programs.

Harry, I don't know what you were smoking in reference to FAU's new $70 million stadium as breathtakingly beautiful, but I gotta get me some of that. I attended the FAU/UNT game this season along with about 13,000 fans. The seats are all metal bleachers, some with chairbacks, most without. Our $70 million statium is breathtakingly beautiful. Theirs is a giant erector set, just like FIU's. Having said that, stomping your feet on metal floors sure makes a lot of noise and their new statium is a great improvement over their previou digs, which was an old soccer stadium that seated 10,000 max.I think long term both programs will do well in CUSA.- 19 replies

I just don't think its over. I don't know how big a stick So. Miss. has, but they can't be happy going west with 4 Texas programs and Tulsa. Also, La Tech/Shreveport is basically an extension of east Texas, and has little in common with southern Louisiana.Just an opinion.

The SPUDS are s.o.l. They put all other sports in Big Sky, who now have 13 football programs with a spot left for Idaho. They are not a D1 program. Their dome seats about 15,000, and they play their basketball games on a court in one of the end zones. NMSU might be a consideration, but it looks like the Belt wants to move east , not west.

I propose the NEW SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE.
wardly replied to trussbussdad's topic in Mean Green Football
I am all for a 10 team "South West " type of conference along the lines proposed by "Golden Eagle" and "Mean Green Eagle". This would allow 3 out of conference opponents. However, since it appears a lot of relaignment is TV driven, I don't know the value of a new conference. Plus I think a new conference would not have automatic NCAA bids, but am unsure exactly how that works. I will leave those questions to far greater minds. -
Marshall pushed hard for both FIU and FAU, while ECU pushed hard for UNC@Charlotte and ODU.I don't know what the advantages are between a 12,14,or 16 team conference, but it appears the preception is that bigger is better. If so, then just merge with the Belt and be done with it. Call me confused.

I went to Pre NIT @K. State. Against UA Huntsville, he made so many substitutions that I thought I was waved in twice. I don't see a system in place, but I also don't see any consistent outside shooting which allows other team to pack it in on Tony.Maybe we were really overated, but certainly are not playing as well this year as last.

I guess another way of looking at this is what did CUSA gain? UNT for SMU,UTSA for Houston,La. Tech for Tulane,MTSU for Memphis,F_U's for UCF,UNC@C for ECU. Who won in this exchange? CUSA or Big East?] Big East took MWC & CUSA schools. CUSA took WAC and Sun Belt teams. Looks like Sun Belt could have 5 out of 10 schools go to a bowl this year, which I think is as many if not more than today's CUSA.

Where to, Sun Belt - From the Bird's Nest
wardly replied to The Commish's topic in Mean Green Football
Looks like the Belt is down to Texas State,ULL,ULM,Troy,USA,A-State,W.K.,and Georgia State.I would think they would want to get back to 10 schools. Count Idaho out, but NMSU may be saved.I wish them well. -
I doubt that Southern Mississippi is wild about going west.
-
I can't see anyone from MAC jumping ship from a very stable conference to CUSA. Whether we like it or not, our expansion pool ,should we choose not to remain at 12 schools, Is the Sun Belt.I don't know if that decision has been made, but W.K.,MTSU,A-State,Texas State,ULL, and even FAU would merit consideration. I don't know what CUSA gains once they fill in a few blanks, nor what the economy of scale is between 12 & 16 schools. I defer to greater minds.

My point was that I don't consider playing a team a decade ago as recent. I appreciate what TCU has accomplished, but at the end of the day its just another rich kid's school like SMU. -

Define regularly. They have played us18 times in our history, including both 1913 and 1914.We had a 4 game series 1984 thru 1987, and a 3 game series 1999 thru 2002,skipping 2000. Define recently. Last game against the Horned Toads was in Ft. Worth in 2002 ,10 seasons ago,a game we lost 10-16.Since then they have refused to play us. Yes, that same TCU. -
Because we can't beat them

I grew up in Ft. Worth, and TCU looks at us as trash. They are worst than SMU, who at least will play us. I am going to the OU game Saturday, and will not be rooting for the "Horned Toads"[no such critter as a Horned Frog"]. GIG EM,OKIES! -
I think CUSA cherry picks the Belt, if it does anything. Geographically W.K., MTSU and fill in the blanks.Throw in A-State and ULL for good measure if you want. In fact, you could make a pretty good regional conference with UTEP,UTSA,TSU,Rice,UNT,Tulsa,A-State,La.Tech,&ULL. If we really are in dire need for a 10th,then throw in NMSU, as the Louisiana school want nothing to do with ULM. At any rate, its nice to be in the inside looking out rather than the outside looking in for a change.

I would be susprised if New Orleans was larger than Shreveport/Bossier post Katrina, and my Louisiana friends tell me Baton Rouge has over 1 million population. At any rate, what ever T.V. market they have is greater than La.Tech's. I just see no logic in the manner in which the Big East is expanding, but then again they didn't ask for my input. ECU they can have, but I am sorry to see Tulane go.Good news for us is that La. Tech's tenure in the Eastern Division of CUSA just got longer. CUSA and Sun Belt should probably sit down and realine both conferences in a regional manner. I don't see the MWC as a viable option for either conference's members, because if it was UTEP would have been long gone.Just an old man's opinion.
-
I don't see what Tulane brings to the Big East unless its the N.O. Bowl, warm up game for the Sugar Bowl.New Orleans is 3rd largest city in Louisiana behind Baton Rouge and I think Shreveport/Bossier City, and no longer has a newspaper that prints daily. I see no reason to push the button and add schools just because we lost 2. We still have a presence in Louisiana and N. Carolina.
-
We were picked to come in 7th or 8th this year in the Belt because of lack of talent, and thats where we finished. We are going to be better next year . Wins should include Idaho,Tulane ,UTEP,UTSA,UAB,and maybe Rice. We would need a lot of breaks to beat ECU,Tulsa,Marshall, Ohio, or Ball State. Only way we beat Georgia is if they miss their bus to the game.Put me down for 5&7,6&6 if we get lucky.

If you are turning 70 in 2013,which I am, there are a number of reasons to look forward to next year. Hell, at my age I look forward to every year.

R.V. is having discussions with UTSA,Tulas, and La. Tech about establishing some type of traveling trophy. I suggested an Armadillo.Having given it more thought a Possum might be more appropriate, as we play dead at home, and are road kill when we travel.

Those Uniforms Posted in the Gallery are Sweet!

You will never see NT on our helmets. You might see UNT, but not as long as Rick is AD. The compromise is NORTH TEXAS, as per R.V. -

You need to provide Rick with an option that will satisfy Jackson and university standards, what ever they are. Rick went to "Mean Green" because of so many local/regional high schools that were "Eagles". There is no way we are going to have a helmet with just "NT" on it because of reasons I stated before. What you might be able to sell is "NORTH TEXAS" with either the SOW or eagle claw as part of it. As far as green colors,I have 5 green shirts and none match whatever our present flavor of the year is.
