What should be a realistic goal 5 year goal for North Texas Athletics?
wardly replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Goals shoud be realistic and obtainable with a little "pie in the sky". The key is to set realistic goals, whatever they may be. -
I read where someone said something to the effect that if you have 16 teams you basically have 2 conferences under one banner.UTEP and RICE are not going anywhere, and I see no Georgia schools available.I doubt that neither So.Miss.nor UAB are excited about being in the Western Division of CUSA. If we are going to expand from 14 to 16 schools then ASU and ULL make sense. However, that would kill the Sun Belt, and I don't know if CUSA has the desire to do so. Granted we have taken 5 schools from them, but 2 more and CUSA becomes the Belt. Out of 14 programs now in CUSA, only 3 remain from original conference before Big Least sucked them dry. As it is,CUSA is CUSA in name only.We might as well take ASU,ULL,and New Mexico State and form our own 9 school conference and become a mini South West Conference.

I can understand NMSU for football only, but not the SPUDS. Idaho is a 1aa program that really belongs in the Big Sky for all sports. Saying that, it would be a real pisser if they beat us at our home opener.

I must agree with Big Dawg. Lets TRY to look at our cup as half full just once instead of always being half empty. Regarding Tulsa, they just hired a new A.D., and are searching for a new President. Until both of those pieces are in place I don't see them jumping ship. Besides, its my understanding that if invited they would join in 15' with Navy, assuming that the Midshipmen still want to make a move.

Thats a good bet.

Tony Mitchell to announce at 5 p.m. on Wednesday

I wish him well, but he really hurt himself this past season. Dropping from 2nd team pre season All American to 2nd team Sun Belt must have scouts scratching their heads. -
UNT men’s basketball look-ahead Part II (who’s back)
wardly replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Mitchell has no chance of being a high draft choice, dropping from 2nd team pre-season all American to post season 2nd team all Sun Belt. A change would probably be good for him, either to another school or the "D" leage, as I personally think he took a giant step backwards under Bedford and has no upside in staying. I also would not be susprised to see some players transfer out, but again just an old man's opinion. -
It will be interesting to see if anyone transfers out.

Benford: "I'm taking 4 Suits to Hot Springs"
wardly replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I think he meant he was getting 4 suites, not taking 4 suits. -
Only if you don't produce.

The point is that he doesn't need us. He went from pre-season 2nd team All American and perhaps a 1st round NBA draft choice to 2nd team all conference in the Belt. Another year with Bedford and he will be forgotten by NBA, if he hasn't been already. Too bad,as it looked like he had a bright future.
-
Mitchell went from a proposed 1st round draft choice last year to a 2nd team Sun Belt Conference player this year. He needs to play another year in college to improve his NBA profile, but he certainly won't accomplish that under Bedford.Just my opinion.
-
Mitchell's NBA stock is about the same as J.C.Pennys. He needs to play another year of college ball ,but perhaps not here.

I don't know if I am the only one who heard this[doubt it], but it my understanding that experienced head basketball coaches didn't exactly beat the door down for our men's job, which frankly shocked me. Anyone else hear the same?

I have asked Rick to "tarp" the upper section to force fans closer to the action and give the arena a more intimate feeling, simular to blocking off back pews in a church, which he doesn't want to do.In addition, this is a university multipurpose facality, just like UTA's,not a dedicated basketball arena. I think with new scoreboard and freshing up it still is a good forum for years to come.

Will UNT's New Baseball Stadium Look Similar To This

Thanks for update on golf and track&field. I was out of the loop on the status of both.Sorry about the bad memories about out men's soccer program, and not to take away from the womens, but the guys were great! -

I mentioned specifically in previous post the need for a" Don January" golf practice facility, as a well as a track and field venue. Sports is in fact big business, and my personal opinion is that building a baseball stadium and committing to funding its continued operation is not a good business decision and a waste of resourses. Athletics at North Texas will always run in the red,and I see no reason to add to it. But again, this is just my personal opinion. -

We are in violent about upward trend about UNT in general. I just would like to see us finish up golf and track&field before we make a multimillion committment to a non revenue producing sport. In my business career I tried to complete existing projects before I took on a larger one that would require a major investment in both time and money. If you look at college baseball as a stand alone business and the start up money came from your personal coffers, then you probably would be like SMU and pass. However, since we don't view money spent on college sports as funds that could be better used elsewhere, such as a needed School of Pharmacy, then we will build our field of dreams and hope they will come.Even thought I would not add baseball, I wish the proposed program nothing but the best,as I do North Texas. -

And thats why we do so well recruiting locally in football and basketball. -

I never have said that adding baseball will adversely affect football. However, there are only so many beans in the pot, and I would rather take care of existing sports than put millions into a baseball park plus the annual cost of fielding a team. Just because you can doesn't always mean you should. I put a UNT proposed baseball stadium in the same financial pew as the UNT@Dallas campus and the proposed UNT@ Dallas School of Law, which is no longer needed since Texas A&M purshased TWU's law school, but probably will be built anyway. -

That's not my point, although we did drop a very good men's soccer program on a Friday and on Monday added what has turned out to be a very good women's team. Baseball is a money pit, pure and simple. We have always been an underfunded athletic program, and just because we now have a little money I see no need to piss it off. How about a "Don January" golf center? Where is our track and field venue ?In summary, we need to take care of the programs we have in place first.Again, just an old man's opinion,61'-66.'
