OU In Financial Trouble
wardly replied to LongJim's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I assume their DFW students pay out of state tuition, which is higher than instate. -

I agree, and am not blaming Rick for swinging for the fences. However to get Dodge he had to take his high school staff plus wait until high school state playoffs were completed . These were Dodge's terms for employment which in hind site [vision always 20/20]should have been rejected. However Rick was trying to jump start our program and if memory serves we had a record crowd at Dodge's first spring game. Also, I have watched UNT football since my freshman year of 1961 and Riley Dodge had more guts than any player that I have ever seen. He was undersized for a D1 program but there was no quit in him. In summary, I am a big fan of Rick. While he was AD we added our great new stadium, which was the first dedicated athletic facility UNT constructed since Fry built a 3,000 sq. ft. AD building that sits in the north parking lot adjacent to the Super Pitt. Our athletic program has always been underfunded , plus Rick went thru a handful of presidents who each had their own vision of what our athletic program should look like or had no vision at all. No, he wasn't perfect, but give him his due. -

Well Rick made a mistake when he brought Dodge on and allowed him to bring his staff, which was in way over their heads. However he recruited well and coach Mac won the First Responder's Bowl with those players. I think Morris is a good coach but our poor defense let both Navy and Memphis off the hook, especially the Tigers, and we could just off easily gone 7&5 instead of 5&7. I respectfully disagree with Keith regarding the players Morris inherited. We still had a terrible defense which amazingly got worst as the season went on . We were luck to get Rogers as QB from ULM.With the transfer portal and NIL programs like ours are rebuilding every year and last season was no exception. We are ranked preseason 9th in the AAC behind Rice. While most of our posters disparage UTSA, the Roadrunners have built a some what nationally recognized football program while UNT continues to be forgotten, especially by its students and the 100,000 or so zombie graduates in DFW. -
Most assistant coaches resumes look like they are running from the law.

For a university that has a very good marketing depart in their School of Business we seem to always be lost when it comes to a plan to successfully promote our athletic department. I got my BBA in 66' and have never understood why we flounder about in selling our athletics to Denton and DFW. Granted we went decades without financial support from our university presidents but that doesn't excuse our failure in the past 20+years . -

So "THE BIG MOUNTAIN " podcast was playing "what if" should the MWC get poached and the following 6 schools they would back fill with are [drum roll please]: IDAHO, NMSU,UTEP,UTSA,TEXAS STATE, and RICE. I realize this is just a MWC fan podcast but UNT didn't even get a mention. Just saying...... -
I sent you a PM. If you are so inclined I will purchase two tickets plus white parking per game anytime that they are available.

Both BIG Z and NT 80 hit the nail on the head. I think a lot of fans are upset over the way College sports has moved from amateur to semi professional seemingly overnight. Between the transfer portal and NIL every year appears to be a rebuild, especially for most G6 programs.I don't have any idea who,if any, players on UNT's last years football and basketball programs are returning this season. The only thing worse that being a UNT fan in the NIL sweepstakes is being a head coach here. Every year you basically start from scratch.

I need two club seats plus parking to the October 26th Tulane game. Both of us are over 80 so parking pass is very important. Thanks, Ward White

Yes, I was there. We had about 3 to 4 couples in the 70's that used to travel to one or two road games a year. However life happens and we all moved away from Dallas, although I returned in 1974. I had two sons under 5 and was trying to start a new business so I missed the majority of Hayden's tenure. While in S.. Louis 68/70' my wife and I drove to Rolla, Missouri and rented a motel room to watch North Texas play Tulsa on a black and white t.v. Rolla was the closest town that carried the game and I think we lost. My wife was pissed as the road trip we much longer than anticipated. The best trip, bar none, was in 1988 when my then 13 year old son and I flew with the basketball team to the NCAA Sub Regionals in Salt Lake City. The day we arrived the Mavericks were in town so we saw them play that evening at the Salt Palace. The next day we were on Utah's campus and saw the Eagles pounded by J.R. Reed and the North Carolina Tar Heels. The second game was Wyoming vs Loyola Marymont [sic] where the teams scored a combined 250 points. I still have never see a college basketball game to match it.

I forgot about UTA. It only seat about 9,000 or so and shortly thereafter they dropped football. I appreciate your suggestion as it gave an old man a trip down memory lane. Also, while you and I probably won't go camping together, I do respect your opinion as well as all those who post .The three hardest words I had to learn in life were "maybe you're right". However sometimes I do forget. My bad.

I know there are fans who have been to more college stadiums than me, but just for fun I will share mine. Army,South Carolina,FIU,FAU,Miami,Auburn, UAB,Missouri,Purdue, I.U.,Kansas State,Ark. St., Arkansas Little Rock. Arkansas Fayetteville, ULL,UL Monroe, LSU, Tulsa, Oklahoma ,Ok. St.,Texas,TCU,SMU,Baylor,SFA,UTEP,Augustana,New Mexico,Air Force,UCLA. UTEP's stadium, the Sun Bowl, is unique as it is carved into a mountain. UCLA's stadium felt like it was about to fall down. The Auburn fans were friendly, LSU fans the most drunk, Texas the most obnoxious. Going to see us play and beat Army with my 15 year grandson was a real treat. We froze our ass off, but watching the cadets preform at halftime was a thrill. However, Fouts Field was better than their stadium. While our new stadium is not as large as some I have seen, I will put it up against just about anyone else's . We are fortunate to have such a great venue and should never take it for granite. Hopefully we will fill it before I bite the big one.

We are in violent agreement. I googled " universities with off campus football stadiums " and Hero Sports listed 23. Some of the schools me really surprised me, such as Miami, UCLA, N.C.S.,Pitt,South Carolina ,Oregon, and Northwestern[. They did have Baylor listed but not Indiana.] One of the best trips I had was when I traveled with the team to Huntington ,W.V. North Texas was playing at Marshall a 1AA playoff game. When we arrived at the stadium their fans were grilling and offered us free beer and food. It was a dirty, nasty game and a fight in the stands rolled on to the field and both teams fought it out. When we got on the bus the same Marshall fans peppered us with beer bottles, rocks and cans. Someone called the airport and told authorities that there was a bomb on board which delayed our departure. I sat next to Ron Shanklin on the flight home who said that he was glad just to get out alive. My best trip was to ULL traveling with the team which turned out to be a hoot. However the story requires a lengthy explanation and I am out of gas.

I stand corrected. I have been to a number of stadiums over my decades of following the Eagles and some of them tend to blend in. Just asking, but why do you think it is so important to have an on campus stadium?
-
Back in the 60's you could commute to either UTA or UNT. Hwy35E was open so most Dallas commuters drove to Denton. The DFW Turnpike was also open so those from the Mid Cities and Ft. Worth commuted to Arlington. I don't think either university has shaken the "commuter school" tag if you base it upon lack of student support for athletics.
-
About 15years or so ago I went to Bloomington Indiana to watch the UNT/Indiana football game . Their stadium was off campus and the game was still well attended. I don't think if really matters much where you play if you had fan support.
-
Thanks for the information! I really appreciate it as I have not been to Waco in over 20 years.
-
Just read where Texas Tech is playing a softball pitcher from California $1 million to play for one season. I just don't see how we can compete in the NIL sweepstakes.
-
I have no idea why you think I want to kill football but came to the conclusion some time ago that you probably road the little bus to school. Baylor's new football stadium is on the river and looks great on tv. I have never attended a game there so have no idea what the proximity is to the campus. I do know that they are moving their basketball venue off campus to downtown Waco. Perhaps the next chat you have with their AD you could ask why.We are in violent agreement that a campus stadium that interested [key word] students could walk to you is preferable than one that is not. However it appears that the Memphis fan base doesn't mind attending an off campus stadium that saved the university several hundred million$ to duplicate the existing "Liberty Bowl". Just a guess but I would think that the Tigers participate in some costs associated with it but really don't know. What I do know is that if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Steve Ramsey: Most Passing Yards in the 60’s!
wardly replied to Glory to the Green's topic in Mean Green Football
If memory serves Ramsey went on to play for the Denver Broncos. . I was in health care sales and distribution in Dallas from 74' thru 03' and knew his wife as she was an operating room nurse at Parkland. She asked me to approach Coach Nelson about the possibility Ramsey of joining his staff. He needed a job but wanted Corky to contact him first. I passed the information on to Coach Nelson. In my world you do the calling if you need a job instead of sitting by the phone. I never heard another word about it but Ramsey never coached for us. He had a bad heart and died young. -
They don't need a campus stadium as the community supports their program. What has the advantage our stadium being on campus done for attendance by students?
-
Also it's not as much about cheeks in the seats as it is eyes on t.v. when they play. Whether they like it or not we are both in the same boat regarding these issues. The advantage they have is that fans will tune in not to see them play but to watch who they play.
