  1. In 1961, my freshman year,Charles Johnson was men's basketball coach. In the 54 seasons since then we have been thru 11 coaches who had a combined 16 winning seasons.Johnny Jones,R.V.'s hire, was responsible for 6 of them. While I personally would not have hired an "assistant head coach", I am content in seeing his 4th year play out. Just saying....
  2. Winning solves most problems in sports.
  3. BSU is to Idaho what U.of A. is to Arkansas.A business model more appropriate to UNT might be found in larger states such as California and Florida who have a mixture of major and mid-major conferences.
  4. Based upon return on investment, base ball is a loser.UNT is going to add another underfunded program as the price of admission to CUSA, which I understand.
  5. "Where are we now, where are we going, and how are we going to get there?" are basic questions in forming a written business plan. The only sports that UNT alumni and students seen to support to any degree are football and men's basketball. Women's basketball is a financial pit based upon attendence and lack of revenue, as will be our baseball program.[ If I were king for a day I would choose the one sport that we are best at and concentrate my limited resources towards it].If I were to emulate a program, I would fine a University with a similar budget and location issues. I am sure there is a school that is surrounded by a bevy of "Big 5" programs that has had success.
  6. 1 for 2 in men's basketball,1 for 3 in women's, and 1 for 2 in football[i still think Coach Mac was a good hire based upon 2013] . How does this compare with the other A.D.'s in C.U.S.A. who have similar budgets?
  7. They are Sun Belt bound. The Belt needs another basketball program, and UAB needs a home.
  8. Like it or not,Benford will get at least one more year.
  9. If memory serves,Aston had a buy out clause with UNC@C that required her to pay them $130,000 [i think that was about the amount] if she left early. I don't know if we paid it or Aston did. Peterson looked like a decent hire that for some reason did not work out. I really think that we have grown beyond hiring "assistant head coaches", which is why I was against our head basketball choice. In summary, our women's basketball program looks like a train wreck, and men's just a little better.
  10. We tend to make fun of UTSA, but have we beat them in anything? Other than UTEP at home in football 2 years ago, how do we stack up against the Miners?
  11. Hard to look back at conference strengths since there have been so many changes. Ranking I saw today had CUSA behind AAC, but ahead of MAC and the Belt ,which is what I would have thought. First time right this year!
  12. Check with athletic department. I'm sure they still have some.
  13. Doesn't say much for CUSA with more than half the teams in the bottom 30.[while I haven't fact checked, I assume FAU,FIU,UNC@C,ODU,W.K.and MTSU are also in the bottom of the barrel ]. That gives us La.Tech,Marshall and Rice as standard bearers.
  14. We sure spend a lot of time majoring in the minors.
  15. Lets see. The Mean Green Defense was named after:a] Mean Joe Greene b] the wife of an assistant football coach c] a fertilizer which guarantees to kill all those Mean Green weeds d]or, a drink made of kool aid, green jello, and Republic Tequila. And the answer is...............
  16. At 72 years old, I have a hard time giving a damn about our 2025 schedule.
  17. All the Louisiana D1 schools seem to be able to do mote with less.
  18. The Big 12 has been told that their present T.V. contract is carved in stone no matter how many members they have way . No way existing schools splits conference money 12 instead of 10 ways.It is, however, the only P5 conference that would let BYU keep its network ,which is a smaller version of the Longhorn channel. Even if BYU was considered for Big 12, there is not another school with a large enough market to partner them with.Bottom line: No reason to expand. They shot themselves in foot by not giving Baylor the title after they beat TCU. Head to head should meet more that just another conference won or loss when the championship is at stake. This from a conference whose tag line is "one true winner."
  19. Thanks for reminding me. Big mistake by A&M.
  20. Contact the Athletic Department. They have plenty to sell. I think I paid $350.00
  21. We said no back in the 60's[if memory serves] or perhaps the 70's. At any rate, Texas Western and Arlington State opted for the UT system, while East Texas State and West Texas State joined the A&M system. At any rate, that ship has sailed, and since then we created a "system" that includes a D.O. medical school,a cheap law school for cheap lawyers, and a South Dallas campus that is a money pit. Who is to say whether or not we would have been better off under the UT umbrella, but those schools who made the move probably are.
  22. It would help if we were actually "MEAN" instead of "LEAN". On another note, Bleacher Report has some really cool helmet designs sans North Texas.
  23. For what its worth department, R.V. told me that he went to "MEAN GREEN"[which I personally dislike] because there are too many high schools in the area with EAGLES as their mascot, and will not use "UNT" on helmet as people who live outside the area would have no idea who we were. While I understand his first point, my freshman year was 1961 and I can't give my eagle up.His second point I totally agree with.We were established as a regional school of learning and have yet to shake that image. Looking back, we MIGHT have been better served by becoming a part of The University of Texas system when we had the chance. Now that's a topic worthy of discussion.
  24. If there I nothing to debate what will we do with our spare time?
  25. True enough, but I don't think anyone would confuse North Texas with Alabama,Auburn, or Georgia Tech. With a few exceptions [s.C. for example] directional schools usually have a national identity problem. And I have had gray hair for much longer that I would care to admit.
