Based upon all the recent postings I have had a personal revelation.I'm sure that most of you already have figured this out,but I have just come to realize that our athletic department needs the "gang of 17" as well as fans who may be a season ticket holder,Meangreenclub member, or just attend an occasional sporting event. It is essential to have big donors who give us funds for projects that we would not be able to accomplish otherwise. Equally it is absolutely necessary that we have fan support and broad giving at a lesser level.It is like a country club. While it is nice to get the big initiation fee up front, if you don't have the monthly dues cash flow the club will fail. I am not going to get into a debate as to which faction should have the greater influence regarding the retention of our current athletic director.The bottom line is that UNT needs all of us, and I hope that after the smoke clears we can go forward and support our new football coach regardless of who hires him.

I thought that the plan was for 16 teams maximum, but certainly be wrong. To my knowledge there has never been a plan to go back to 12 schools.

Maybe you are right. Maybe we have had a string of bad luck and made poor choices in the past. My question still is of the coaching candidates that we think are available, who might want the UNT job, as opposed to who we might want?

I look at the job of UNT head football coach as a career killer. We have fired our last 8 hires. Granted that there are only 128 D1 positions available, but with our coaching track record and inheriting the worst program in D1 football who would want the job?

If I publically give up the name of who told me that the basketball head coaching position was not highly sought after[at least by those we were interested in] then I would lose his confidence. You can believe me or not. I only bring this up because I am concerned that our football head coaching position might be a difficult job to fill. Guys, I was told that our biggest surprise when Johnny left for LSU was an overall lack of interest in the job.[ I don't mean to discount the SFA head coach that moved of to Texas State and was a favorite of Firefighting Rick].I was really shocked when told this, as I though our program was the best it had been since Bill Blakely[sic?] was here.

Guys, let's consider looking at a possible head coach in a different manner.Instead of listing who we might like to see hired, lets list coaches who we think might be interested in coaching at UNT. Frankly, I just don't know how good a job opportunity it is,as we have the worst football program in D1. Yes, we have a new stadium, but that just leveled the playing field. So fire away.

I think we are going to have to pay close to a $million a year with 5 year contract to get someone we really want.

Unless we hire an assistant our new coach will not be announced till season's end. There usually is about a 15% to 20% turnover rate in D1, so someone who is really sought after will wait and evaluate all his options. Historically UNT has been a coaching graveyard, so if it is hard to recruit players here [as per Dickey and Mac], then it is just as hard to recruit coaches.

They have solid basketball and baseball programs. Both NMSU and Idaho would be best served by dropping football down a notch and moving to Big Sky Conference. Of course then we would not have programs to look down on.

Yes I have taken risk in life, as have most of us, but what does that have to do with the price of poker? Todd Dodge was a risk R.V. took. However, there is no margin for error in this hire. In a perfect world I would want a former Texas high school coach from the metroplex who has been a successful college head coach.I also would want to be 20 years younger, 25 pounds lighter,and have as much money as my ex wife thinks that I have.

I don't know where Brett Vito got the idea that a committee was in the works, but that was never going to happen. R.V. stepped outside the box when he hired Dodge, which blew up in his face. Danny Mac was a safe hire, that fell apart quicker than the fall of Siagon. This next hire must be spot on. Personally I think coach Chico has earned a shot over any other assistant coach from other programs that might be under consideration The question is can R.V. afford to take the chance on anyone other that a proven head coach with strong Texas ties. Personally I think not

I respect UNT90's point of view. We just agree to disagree on the issue of a banner. The bottom line is that we all want what is best for out athletic department.Regardless of the outcome, I plan on continuing to support the program , as I would hope we all would. Pogo in the comics[too old for most of you] one said " I have met the enemy and he is us". When I see, and actively participate in bickering of this nature, I fee he may be right.

I would have tried to work up the food chain, starting with the president. If no results, go to Lee Jackson. If no results there, then The B.O.R. If by then I had exhausted all reasonable avenues of communication, then I would write a letter to the editor of DMN as a way to take my issue public. I would not have done a banner, because if all other options had failed I would have concluded that if they didn't care why should I. I realize the process I suggest would have taken time, but if it had began after your poll it should have been completed by now. Guys, the "to banner or not to banner" question has been beaten to death by me and others. I am tired of it, and am just going to wait and see how this all plays out without further comment.

My panties are in a wad in that I don't think flying a negative banner is a way to get a positive result.Again, just my opinion. The four hardest words I had to learn In business were " you may be right". That phrase could apply to both sides of this coin.

Once again, I realize your groups frustration,[ no one specific individual] but flying a banner may make you feel better but I fear it will have a negative impact of our university. Our new president will be the ultimate decision maker, and in my opinion your actions will be counterproductive. Your response to my opinion is "how do you know?" My answer is,"I don't". I tend to look at issues as how I would respond. I have only had one conversation with our president, but he seemed to me not a man to respond to what many perceive as a personal attack on his athletic director. You can debate the validity of my observation, but I personally would discount actions by a group of unnamed alumni if I was in his position.

Why do you think that you represent the majority of the fan base? You may represent over half the posters on this board,but you feed off each other giving the impression that you actually have power.The fact that you think raising $1600 [22 gave an average of $75 each] is significant just shows how delusional you are as regards impacting change.

The reality is that the dissidents on this board are all mouth and no money.

My only point when I started this thread was to try to get a sense of were there enough UNT supporters who gave enough money to effect change, because like it or not that is the bottom line. So far it appears obvious to me that there aren't.

I think hate is a very strong word that I am beginning to see regularly on this board . If seems to come from about 2 dozen or so "haters" of R.V. I can't if you have any clout,or if your financial contributions to UNT Athletics is bigger than a breadbasket. Therefore, I am asking "the leader of the pack" to please put together a survey as the number of "fire R.V." members you represent, and the combined annual financial contribution of said group. I am not asking for names, but just trying to get a handle how deep the water is. You have asked the Athletic Department to be more open, and I am asking the same of you. I have no hidden agenda, but whether we like it or not numbers and money do get peoples attention. I would appreciate your consideration of my request.
