  1. WE are not big enough, strong enough, of fast enough to compete in either CUSA or Sun Belt. We have NO players. Our new coach must start from scratch. Why anyone thinks he will be able to win immediately is beyond me. This will be a major rebuild which will take at least 4 years just to get us semi-respectable. Of all the 25 to 30 programs that will be replacing their head coach the UNT job is at the bottom of the barrel. EVEN New Mexico State University just beat Texas State for their 2nd win of the season. Goals must be reasonable and obtainable with a little pie in the sky. If anyone thinks that filling our opening with the coaching qualifications that most of us feel is necessary[Texas high school recruiting connections, high octane offense, etc.] is going to be easy, I have some land in East Texas that gets wet twice a year I would like to show you. If it is hard to recruit players to North Texas,[looking at our roster it must be], then it stands to reason that it will be hard to recruit a coach that will take a chance on us, not us on him.Bottom line: In my opinion this is going to be a difficult position to fill regardless of athletic facilities and DFW location.
  2. Louisiana cranks out a large volume on good high school players, and while LSU gets the pick of the litter, the Bulldogs get the best of the rest. They tap into Shreveport as well as Arkansas,Mississippi, and East Texas, and have a rich tradition of WINNING football. They have a "any time, any where" attitude and have had signature victories in the past.
  3. Why is he leaving? Trying to get a jump on the crowd?
  4. A good friend from OKC called me yesterday to confirm interview. We think it happened but Riley is one of many who will be interviewed. I don't understand the denial unless he is not interested in the job.
  5. I really hope you are right, but SMU faced same situation this year, has better talent than us in a harder conference, and only has one win against a lesser opponent.
  6. Big Mistake.
  7. A decent core from 1 & 11 team? Who cares if any of them come back. We lost because of L.O.F.T.[Lack Of F...ing Talent], and last years recruits were no better that the previous year's.We are worse off than when we fired Dodge because he left us with a core of good players. Danny Mac left us with nothing. Who ever thinks this is going to be a quick fix is up for a bitter disappointment.
  8. Four years to turn this program around. With the players we have 3 wins would be reasonable for next year.
  9. I just saw an 0&7 team beat a 1 win team and now we think that we can win next year.Surely you jest. If you are ranked 128th out of 128 teams and get you head handed to you by a 1AA program its because you don't have players. Again, look at So. Miss. as an example. They went from a bowl winning season to 0&12 in one season a few years ago and are just now turning their program around. Again, we all have opinions, but mine is that you are looking at 3 to 4 years before we start to win as many as we lose.
  10. Sorry guys. I thought I read somewhere that he was 26. My bad.
  11. Not saying he wouldn't hake a great hire, but 26 years old seems very young for someone to build a staff that could turn around one of the worst programs in D1. This may well be R.V.'s last head football hire and I don't see him taking a big risk on someone who has so little experience.
  12. It's been exciting every 4.5 years when we hire a new football coach.Regardless of our new head coaches recent success in other states, I really want someone who has come up thru the Texas high school ranks similar to SMU's recent hire.
  13. We can't hide the fact that we have fired our last 8 head football coaches. If that's not a coaching graveyard I don't know what is. I don't bring this up to belabor the point, but to offer the opinion that our next hire will be taking a bigger risk on us than we are on him. We probably will have to overpay in order to get a "safe hire" who is betting his career that he can bring us back from the dead.
  14. This won't happen. R.V. knows that we any risk taken must be as minimal as possible. In addition, the BOR has loosened the purse strings so that we will have plenty of money for new head coach and staff.
  15. Complaining about our 1st win of the season just proves the old adage that some people would bitch if hung with a new rope.
  16. Too bad he won't be considered for the head coaching position. I really like him.
  17. Dodge was making about $85,000 at Southlake and we tripled it to about $250,000. There are not a lot of head coaches interested in a job at this salary. We tripled it again to about $750,000 for coach MAC. More coaches should have been interested in coming to UNT. Our next hire"[book it ,Dano]" will be in the $1,000,000 to $1,500,000 range. This will open us up to a level of prospects that in the past we could only dream about. I really believe that we are going to strike pay dirt this time around regardless of who does the hiring.
  18. How can anyone say we have some good players on our team when we have not won a game Anyone see any good players on our side of the field against Portland State?
  19. The UCF job will pay more and is closer to his recruiting base. Just saying.
  20. Pastorgrant," the third time is the chart".[or so I hope]
  21. There is an article in todays USA TODAY regarding coaching turnover. The following quote is of note:" It's no exact science when you hire a coach," Western Kentucky athletics director Todd Stewart said. "If it was, you wouldn't have 25 to 30 jobs turning over every year and you wouldn't have Notre Dame, which has more resources than anybody, actually paying someone $15 million not to coach their team."
  22. I think that up to $1,000,000 per year salary will attract a large quantity of applicants, but I am unsure as to the quality of candidates. Harry is right in there are only 128 D1 jobs, so we should get a lot of resumes. I also think that there is tremendous pressure on R.V. to get it right this time, and if I were him would welcome our President providing a second pair of eyes as well as spreading the responsibility. If this hire fails for what ever reason even R.V.'s staunch supporters might stop and give pause.Personally , even though I am in this boards minority on the subject,I have every confidence in his ability to do so.
  23. Guys, with all due respect, I can't think of but a very few players on our roster that play anywhere in CUSA except UTSA. We are the worst of the worst in D1 football. Two of the last three coaches we fired both stated that UNT is a school where it is hard to recruit. If it is hard to recruit players, it just might be hard to recruit coaches. I have asked for names of coaches who we think might be interested in our head coaching position as opposed to those who we might want and have gotten no response. Just because I think it might be harder to hire at UNT doesn't mean I am not a loyal longtime fan. I just happen to see more warts on the frog than others.
  24. I read once where when one person complains about a problem there are 10 more who feel the same way.
  25. You can + or - , but I would someone rather name a coach who might want this job.
