  1. IF given the choice of moving to Denton or staying in Ft.Worth, we have hired the wrong man if he moves.
  2. UNT was D.A.L. in EVERY C.U.A. category! Not only is the cupboard bare, there is no cupboard. Either finalist works for me, but my first job would be to cull out the players who need to move on and help them find another home. If they are reluctant to leave, then pull their scholarship.I don't know if that would adversely effect grade point average or not, but whoever comes in must make some hard decisions and clean house or he is just setting himself up for failure.
  3. This looks like the guy we want. The Texas position coach does nothing for me, as does Applewhite.
  4. The Houston head coach is probably waiting to see what Big 5 jobs open up next week. If Jimbo Fisher jumps to LSU, would he be considered for the Florida St. job? If I am one of the top 4 guys considered for the UNT job I might want to drag my feet a while to see if the Houston job opens up. Think Morris at SMU wishes he had waited to see if something else became available, such as South Carolina? Next week will be real interesting. I am beginning to enjoy this part of college football as much as signing day, which might say as much as our lack of recruiting ability as my increased senility.
  5. With the amount of money involved in the cost of a new football coach I think it is common practice for the president of the university to be very involved in the hiring process. I also remember the optimism when Dodge was hired with about 5,000 at his first spring game.[I have slept since then, so don't hold me to that number]. We are so ready for a winner that I hope we will pull together in support of our new coach because he has a really tough row to hoe.
  6. I think that this is what college football has evolved into. The offenses are so far ahead of the defenses so that most games are a shootout. Check out some of TCU,Baylor,TT, Okla ST. , and Oklahoma finishes. This is what fans want to see, and kids want to play.
  7. I would think that the announcement would come next week on a slow news day.I don't see how anyone could say that our offense is fine except for quarterback. Our offense sucks, was about the lowest scoring team in Division 1 on about the worst team. This will be a painful rebuild, and I don't envy the brave sole who is about to take our job.
  8. Do we know of anyone really interested in our opening? Just asking.
  9. The UCF job is open, and Georgia may be. Fritz would probably be a good fit for either. The only coach mentioned on any posts that seems to want this job is the TT assistant, unless someone knows of anyone else.
  10. It is my understanding that we are willing to pay $1.5 million for the right coach. I just have not heard of much interest in the job. If anyone has, please name names.
  11. I would like to have a date with Halley berry but she is not interested, like most of the coaches we want.
  12. I have never given any thought to running the triple option, but that doesn't mean that we can't. What ever we have been selling the recruits aren't buying. Perhaps we need to come up with a new "product" as suggested , change our focus, and fish in a pool of above average players whose skill set is better suited to the wishbone. Not my decision, but food for thought.
  13. " And Mike wants the U.N.T. job." Great to hear for a change!
  14. I keep reading disclaimers from top assistant coaches stating that they have no interest in North Texas. At first blush only Jinks seems to check all the boxes. Does anyone really know his level of interest, and has he actually been interviewed ? Some people submit a resume just to get their name out there in order to get looks from other programs.
  15. I am not saying hire Chico or close the program. What I am saying is that this may not be that easy of a position to fill. Hopefully I will be proved wrong, which would make me very happy.
  16. I had a 30 year career in medical device sales and distribution, and regardless of the situation my cup was always half full. However, I was always realistic in assessing the sales opportunity, which I think some of us are not doing when evaluating the attractiveness of the head coaching position. Granted we have a beautiful stadium, which leveled the playing field. And yes, we are close to the metroplex,a hot bed of high school football. However, for what ever the reasons, the previous 8 head coaches over the past 30 years have been fired. If UNT isn't the definition of a coaching graveyard I don't know what is. And if I am a successful coach at another program who is ready to move up, I don't think that this is a job that would attract me. Granted, if I turn this program around I could move up to coach the with the big boys. But what makes me think I can win where those before me have not. What has changed at UNT that would allow me to be win? In addition, the A.D. is under fire, and I might not be working very long for the man who hired me. My point is that this job may not have coaches jumping up and down to apply, and who ever we hire must be a real risk taker. I just don't know how many of those guys are out there, which my be why our applicants seem a little thin. just an old man's opinion.
  17. Anyone else think that the number and quality of resumes, with exception of Briles and Jinks, looks very thin? I mean, is this all there is? Even if you are going thru an agent you must submit a resume at some point. Just asking.
  18. Coaching stops around the metropex seem like a waste of time. I just don't think its the coaches job to be a cheerleader , as if he doesn't win it won't make any difference .
  19. Rick, I was at game also. Something happened with a punt at end of game which is why we lost, but I can't remember what. Look at So. Miss. as a blue print for North Texas. They were 0&12 just a few years ago and are bowl eligible this year.
  20. I have supported North Texas football since 1961, and this is the worst ,mainly because it was so unexpected.
  21. UTSA is the only game in town. San Antonio is 3rd largest city in Texas. It is easy to see why Power 5 schools would want to play there for recruiting purposes vs. Denton. Granted we are 30 miles from DFW, but it's not the same. To me the best school for us to compare our scheduling with is Texas State. This is just my observation. Since I don't know their athletic budget or alumni level of giving I can't express an informed opinion as to why they can and we can't. I would think they would be trading dollars, as what you would pay them to come to San Marcus is probably what they pay you to come to their house.
  22. While I rarely agree with any post by UNT90, he has hit the nail on the head. This is our worse team since my freshman year of 61', we are a joke, and a few Southland Conference teams might beat us. In addition, the separation between the Power 5 conferences and Group of 5 has grown each year. In the 80's we could hold our own with some of them, but no more. Our program has always been underfunded which created the need to play money games on the road. When Darrell Dickey was here we sometimes played 3 or 4 a year. Now we are down to about 2 annually. Our last game at Fouts was with K-State, which was poorly attended, and we have played Indiana in our new stadium [drew about 20,000+ in 30,000 seat venue]. Both games were one for ones. I don't know how other schools schedule two for one games with Power 5 schools. It appears the our preference is $1,000,000 for a one night stand. While I would like to see name schools come to Denton, it probably is hard to justify the cost because of weak attendance. The bottom line is that winning in football cures a lot of ills, which makes this coaching hire so important, regardless of who makes it.
  23. This is my 54th year of watching EAGLE football, and by far the most embarrassing and disappointing . The loss to Portland State was a new all time low for the program. However, outside of hard core North Texas fans no one, not even in the metroplex, really cares. We have a core fan base of about 12,000 or so who in the past have supported our football program year in and year out. I have been one of them, but at nearly 73 am running out of hope. We have a mixed bag. Five bowl appearances in 15 years coupled with 11 losing seasons and 3 fired coaches equals a mess. The next hire may be my last, and for personal reasons as well as for the university I hope we get it right, regardless of who makes the hiring decision. We need to find a coach who is willing to take a chance on us as much as we are him. I personally don't want a retread. I would rather go down swinging with a hot shot offensive minded assistant coach with strong Texas high school ties that a head coach from out of state. But that's just an old man's opinion. Regardless,GO EAGLES!
  24. Ryan, nobody likes to be told their baby is ugly, but ours is. With luck and a great hire we might make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
