DRC: Maybe Mac's right, Maybe its too early to bury UNT
wardly replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Still, even if we win out, we would have beaten no one with a winning record, with the possible exception of UTEP. Personally, losses to La. Tech and So.Miss. showed me we are far from a solid team. -

I don't think we can beat either UT I don't think we can beat either UT@ on the road, and even if we finish 6&6, which I would consider a good rebuilding record, we certainly are not bowl worthy. Just an old man's opinion. -
We also beat SMU.Whee!

MGS: Top 5 Games In NT History...'75 Tennessee?
wardly replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
To my knowledge we have no marquee wins over a ranked team, so the win at Tennessee works for me as number one.I believe that Woods was "player of the week" for his performance .Fry used that victory to turn our program around, which peaked in our 77' top 20 ranking. I'm glad someone cares enough to rank our top 5 wins. -
FIU and UTSA are only opportunities for wins that I can see.

How can a team be so different from one year to the next?
wardly replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
This year we are playing like a "mid minor", not major. I have written 14' off, and would like to see kids play that are important to our future. My question is, will we be any better next year? -

Marshall recruits well in Florida, which is akin to selling ice boxes to Eskimos . -

Its not the same players, hence not the same team. A few years ago So. Miss. won 10 or 11 games, and went 0&12 the next year. -
What has happened to UTSA? They looked good against Houston and Arizona early in the season

I think we have only covered the spread once this year[sMU].

Brett Vito Slide raises question: Why isn’t program capitalizing?
wardly replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Darrell Dickey went thru the same post bowl slump. After going 8&5 in 02',9&4 in 03',and 7&5 in 04', he only won 5 games the next 2 years and was fired. Could history be repeating itself, and if so, why? -
At least we could probably compete in the Belt, probably in the middle of the pack.Plus I though ULL had cool uniforms.

Pick of the litter.

With possibly a few exceptions, I don't recall us having a great deal of success with JUCO's in the past.

In the end it all boils down to recruiting defensive line
wardly replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I thought our defensive line gave it all they had, but for a few exceptions just couldn't get the job done. My whine with coach Mac is his complaining about how hard it is to recruit in Big !2 country. Gary Patterson seemed to do a pretty job winning both the WAC and MWC titles before TCU moved up. -
I thought McNulty played well. Take away a holding call that negated a touchdown pass, and a missed makeable field goal, and we are in the game. Problem is defense. So. Miss. had the ball 15 minutes more than us, and our front 4 had a very hard time putting pressure on their QB.

McCarney’s candid remarks about the situation at UNT
wardly replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I am tired of our staff using "we are in Big 12 country" as an excuse for poor recruiting. TCU was able to win conference championships in both the WAC and MWC conferences fishing in the same pool that we do. If you think that UNT is so hard to get good players to attend, perhaps you should get out of the way and let someone else have a crack at it. I like coach Mac, but we were looking for a coach when we found him. -
If UNT is that hard to recruit to, how do you explain the success of ULL and Arkansas State? They are in similar sized towns in the Sun Belt, but field much better football teams that we do.
-
Why is it so hard to recruit at North Texas? I could understand why Fouts was a turn off, and understand that our new stadium just leveled the playing field, but what are the specific reasons that make it difficult to get players to Denton or has Dickey's statement of 10 years ago become a cop out for our current staff?

The really good programs, such as Alabama, RELOAD. The rest of us REBUILD. With no established QB and only 9 experienced players returning I don't know what REALISTICALLY we should of expected. If memory serves, most "experts" I saw [note I said "most"]had us behind UTSA,RICE, and LA TECH in the West.Having said that, I was shocked as anyone at our drubbing by UAB.We still have a chance to win a few more games, but you can let those bowl dreams go.We are a young, not very good team. And,if all else fails, why not blame the players?[sarcasm]
-
Why is everything about blame?Perhaps you are to blame for not giving enough money so that we could have a larger recruiting budget in order to recruit more out of state players. There is a difference between accountability and blame.

Verdict is in on the 2014 North Texas Defense
wardly replied to ColoradoEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm sure some computer skilled fan could look up the minutes we had the ball in our 3 losses verses our opponent. My best guess is that our defense was on the field 60% of the time. -

I was at the game and had a sideline pass. It's hard to beat bigger, stronger, faster. When we loaded the box to stop the run, they successfully passed. When we played back to defend the pass, they successfully ran. Until our offense gets it going, the defense will get the most minutes and tire faster. We are a young team and will, in my opinion, get better, but the growing pains will hurt.
