Positive vs Negative Financial Reinforcement
wardly replied to UNT 90 Grad's topic in Mean Green Football
Why do you think that you represent the majority of the fan base? You may represent over half the posters on this board, but you feed off each other giving the impression that you actually have power. The fact that you think raising $1600 [22 gave an average of $75 each] is significant just shows how delusional you are as regards impacting change.- 75 replies

So is the panty raid before or after we toilet paper the presidents house?

My only point when I started this thread was to try to get a sense of were there enough UNT supporters who gave enough money to effect change, because like it or not that is the bottom line. So far it appears obvious to me that there aren't.

I think hate is a very strong word that I am beginning to see regularly on this board . If seems to come from about 2 dozen or so "haters" of R.V. I can't if you have any clout,or if your financial contributions to UNT Athletics is bigger than a breadbasket. Therefore, I am asking "the leader of the pack" to please put together a survey as the number of "fire R.V." members you represent, and the combined annual financial contribution of said group. I am not asking for names, but just trying to get a handle how deep the water is. You have asked the Athletic Department to be more open, and I am asking the same of you. I have no hidden agenda, but whether we like it or not numbers and money do get peoples attention. I would appreciate your consideration of my request.

Serious Question about the RV situation
wardly replied to GreenTexan13's topic in Mean Green Football
You guys are pissing in the wind on a flat rock. If our president makes personnel based upon a flyover then I will be paying for the next banner demanding his removal. -
RCADE, you are correct, but that only happened after our ad. Before it the job was his. I was just interested in what I wanted without considering the depth of the negative effect if might have on others. From that point on I have tried not to repeat my mistake.

You are right. Two weeks is not 2 days, nor is it 24 hours. I am just frustrated over the entire banner situation. For every action there is a reaction, sometimes unexpected. After Haden Fry left his heir apparent was Bill Brasher, whom I did not know. He was endorsed by the president,Jitter Nolan, Mean Green Club, and the players. However, a friend and I decided that we needed a bigger splash in order to keep our dream of admission to the Southwest Conference alive. So we took out an ad in the DMN sports page stating that we needed a "name coach, not a no name coach", and if you agreed you could call Jitter Nolan. We provided both his home and office phone number, and signed the article Concerned Alumni For Athletics. As a result, North Texas decided to hire an athletic director first, which so angered coach Brasher that he withdrew his name from consideration and went to Iowa with coach Fry. The DMN then wrote a long article about "these guys aren't kidding. They have a lot of money, and are talking about hiring Ara Parsegan[sic] form Notre Dame." In fact it was just me,$500, and another dumb friend who did not did not think our actions thru.I ran my own business for 30 years and have done my share of terminating employees. However, to this day I still feel embarrassed and ashamed for what I did nearly 40 years ago. I have never shared this story with anyone other that a few close friends, but thought it might make those hell bent of flying this banner stop and give pause.

+1. Any school president worth his salt is not going to be buffaloed by a banner flown by disgruntled fans. Whose next? The director of the music department?
-
It took you guys nearly 2 weeks to raise a lousy $1,600 . I hope the rest of the information you provided was more accurate.

If this banner was viewed as harmless there would be no discussion, but its not. In addition, I don't recall me or anyone stating that the loss to Portland State was acceptable. It was not, and the coach who led us to a H.O.D. bowl victory just a few short years ago lost his job. I am not disputing you right of free speech to express your feelings about R.V. I just respectively disagree with the manner.

Does anyone really think that a fire R.V. banner is going to succeed ? It will have just the opposite effect, as the president will just did in his heels. Does anyone think that a fire R.V. banner is going to have a positive effect on potential coaching prospects? I know you guys mean well, but from where I sit all that happen is that you will be viewed by administration in a very negative light, give the university a black eye, and hurt the one you love[great song]. In summary, be careful what you wish for.
-
Not to argue the point, but an assistant coach who has bounced around a few programs calling R.V. a used car salesman is a far cry from "every coach in D1 despises him." That would be 128 times staff of about 10 equals 1,280 D1 coaches. Look, you guys are going to do what you are going to do. But it's absurd undocumented statements such as this that undermine your creditability. I admire the passion that you have for North Texas . I am just not a fan of negative energy, and am truly sorry that you feel the need to take this type of action. Regardless,GO EAGLES[looking at our past record I think MEAN GREEN is pretty cheese' for a knick name , but again that's my opinion, differences of which make the world go round]

I understand that you guys are pissed off, and you certainly have the right to fly whatever banner you wish. However, just because you can does not mean you should. First of all. it may make you feel better, but it won't get R.V. fired. Second, and most importantly, how is this going to look to a prospective new head coach? I just think that a public display such as this may make you look like a bunch of loose cannons instead of the avid supporters that I know you to be. In my opinion ,a much more professional approach would be to draft a letter to our president explaining who you are, why you want change, and request a sit down meeting with him. I would draft it in a professional manner, make it non threatening, and get as many signatures as possible. What I am asking you to consider doing is set your emotions aside, put your business hats on, and approach it as you would if this was a problem in your company. If your request to meet with our new president falls on deaf ears, then you can look yourselves in the mirror knowing that you tried a reasonable approach and proceed with whatever plan of action you feel warranted. My career of 35 years was in health care sales and distribution related to orthopedic hip and knee replacement. My take away message was that you can always operate, so try all other remedies first. Hopefully you will consider doing the same regarding the issue at hand. Thanks,Ward B. White, Class of 66'.

It was pretty rough at Marshall in 1988. I flew in with the team, and before the game your fans were very friendly and invited us to tailgate with them providing us with both food and beverages. However, it was a hard fought [ almost dirty] game and at the end a fight between fans erupted in the stands, carried on to the field, and both teams started swinging. We boarded our buses with rocks and bottles raining down on us, and when we got to the airport police were searching our plane because of a bomb threat. As we flew off Ron Shanklin, who was seated next to me, said that he was glad to get our of there alive. Anyone else who there can chime in, but it was an interesting road trip.

It's a gruel world for you.

Well, a friend called and said the number 17 represented the suite holders at our stadium. I guess I am getting old, as I never would have guessed it. I wonder how many club seat holders it takes to equal a suite holder and expand the gang?

MGB: UNT considering forming hiring committee for new coach
wardly replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Would someone please [a] define what a big donor is at UNT name the 17 big ones that keep getting referenced. [c] I think the football committee has only 2 members. R.V. and the President. Universities these days tend to use consultants instead of committees to screen applicants. -
I don't believe that there will be a committee. However, could you list the names of the 17 "big donors" that you reference?
-
Your" fact check machine "is wrong, just like the juvenile idea of a "Fire R.V." banner. Blaming a record loss by a 1a school to a 1aa school on the A.D. because of an unsubstantiated rumor is nearly as dumb as flying a banner. to fire that A.D. I sometimes think that most of us who post on this board road the little bus to school.
-
If Mac had won against Portland State he would not have been fired, and would have been given the chance to turn the season around. In addition, I think a banner calling for the termination of our A.D. would not be the type of message we want to send to prospective head coaches. Just an old man's opinion.

I am just asking, but what level of interest do you think the head coaching position at North Texas will generate? I am thinking lukewarm. -
If you really want the replace the Athletic Director then make your case in a professional manner to those who have the authority to implement change. As it is all the naysayers are like the big bad woof huffing and puffing to blow the door down. Just a lot of hot air.
