Point taken. The irony of the whole CU situation is that usually when the team is WAY behind, they start thinking pass. Like I pionted out earlier, Thomas had 117 before CU went up by 2 scores. That's Dickey-ball for ya. -gm

An interesting fact from the UNT athletics preview (not really significant, though). UNT has a 16-0 series advantage in sacks over MTSU. And this "could" be our best o-line yet. ##crosses fingers##
-
interesting find. what can we learn from this? -gm

FWIW, Thomas had 117 yards in the Colorado game last year when CU went up 28-14. I would think coaches lean towards slinging around a bit more when they're down 2+ TDs. Dwone Hicks got front page in USA Today in 02. It doesn't mean he's the best in the country, but how many MTSU posts did we read claiming he could start for [insert SEC team here]. BTW, we finally have a competent secondary coach. I'll take this stat: 2001, UNT (0-5) 24, MTSU (5-0) 21 I was FAR more concerned back then than I am now.

I read that article and immediately thought of UNT. I hope that Dickey and Co see this and have the team prepared. We (UTEP) are lucky that we have a bye week before our next game against UH; it afforded Price to let the players have the day off and heal from those nasty blocks. On a side note, it's just as exciting to be a Miner fan right now: the defense completely destroyed NMSU on Saturday. Particularly in the first half. They finished with negative total in the rushing yards department! We've got a beast in our Dave Campbell Defensive POY LB. Thomas Howard is 240 and runs a low 4.3 40. The guy is a monster out there and showed it against the Aggies. His impact is in line with what Booger was doing his jr year. From the same paper as above: The 6-3, 240-pound Lubbock native registered 10 tackles (five solo, five assisted), two tackles for losses (minus 12 yards), a sack ( minus 9), an interception (20 yards), two pass breakups and a fumble recovery against the Aggies. He moved into eighth place on the UTEP career list with 29 tackles for losses, as well as a tie for 10th place on the sack list with 11. Howard article And he fits the UNT player mold to a boot: the guy was under-recruited and over-looked...coming into the Miner program as a walk-on DB.

The starters on a decent-to-good mid-major could very well make their case for starting at any school in the country. With the exception of the bottom feeders each year, the difference between them (the BcS) and the rest of us becomes significant at the 2-3 string level. Say what you will about the SBC, but leading the nation in rushing at any level can't be dismissed as if accomplished by an average back. Seems like last year we had WAY more questions on the o-line than this year. Am i remembering wrong? And we've got BOTH runninng backs back behind that line? AND...this year we have Quinn with (do you remember this guy) Nwigwe... I have this cartoonish image in my head of Meager throwing the worst rainbow pass ever, Quinn leap-frogging all the MUTS in the field before he catches and laterals to a streaking Thomas. *cough* sorry..back to reality. You all couldn't stop a 2002 offense that had a rFr at QB, no Quinn, no Thomas, no Nwigwe, and Cobbs watching Galbreath start from the sidelines. Your D may be vastly better, but so is our O.

twenty one knockdowns. Not good enough! Give me 100 pushups then deliver 30 pancake blocks -gm

maybe this 2-5 you saw was just a variation of the 3-3-5 they run: I wouldn't be suprised if they brought up one of their dbs and took a lineman and dropped him back a little. But I'm only the couch coach...never mind my opinion -gm

I think we should open the game with 3 straight
greenminer replied to calvin's topic in Mean Green Football
Too general. Give something Dickey can build on; to be specific: We need to open up the game with a touchdown and then answer with another if/when they keep scoring. That way we'll always be one-up on them. -gm -
Interesting sig you have there, 2$ -gm

Sounds good to me: 8 passes the first quarter 1 in the second Total game passes: 9 UNT win: priceless. There are some things that sexy MUTS can't buy. For conference winning streaks, there's DickeyCard.

Question: How Do You Make The Signature On GMG.com
greenminer replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
If there's a way to get a poll into a signature, Plumm is going to find out. *In my best Agent Smith voice*: IT IS INEVITABLE, MR ANDERSON. -

Didn't Bill Braskey play for us? I heard he sneezed and accidentally blew the opposition off their feet. Man I miss him. TO BILL BRASKEY -gm

Question: How Do You Make The Signature On GMG.com
greenminer replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
goto your controls, then "edit signature" I suggest typing out your message before doing any formatting. Now, make sure you're in "normal mode" and not "guided mode". Highlight the text you want formatted, then just use the drop-down menus 'size' and 'color' to adjust as you please. That should do it for you. -
Going against the thread's grain, eh? This may have long-term implications, i.e. the OU-UT game. Typically, OU has shredded every opponent leading into every UT game during this Red River streak they own. This may be the ice breaker that UT needs to go in with the mentality they've lacked before. I really don't give a flip about UT, but I like anything that steals Adrian Peterson's thunder. -gm

Does NT Not Having A Game This Saturday Help Us,
greenminer replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Sorry, Plumm; I still don't think I've heard a convincing argument otherwise. I'm just playing devil's advocate at this point, but the comparison to last year's MTSU results just doesn't parallel ours: that second game at home was against an FAU team that had 2 games under it's belt. We won't have any going into next weekend. -gm -

WHAT WILL NT BE PLAYING FOR THIS YEAR
greenminer replied to SilverEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Pending the bowl finds a new home, I would like to see the bowl game do something to honor the victims of this tradegy...a la the '01 NO Bowl game with Colorado St. Following the 9/11 incident, most Mean Green fans here I'm sure can remember the field-sized American Flag in the shape of the States being waved in honor of those that were lost. I was fortunate enough to be in the Green Brigade that year and I got to be on the field holding the edge with other band members...including those from the Colorado St's band. I don't think I'll ever forget that. Is something being considered for Katrina vicitms? Should something be considered? -gm -
Does NT Not Having A Game This Saturday Help Us,
greenminer replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
I was thinking about this today. Obviously, Coach Dickey and Co are going to take advantage of the situation and get more than a few extra days to look at MTSU film and prepare the team. The flip side of this, and it worries me, is that MTSU will go into the game against us with a veteran squad AND a game under their belts. I think that is a HUGE advantage for them. I would think the biggest learning curve of the season is after that first game, when the players put all that practice into the situation for the first time and walk away having a much better idea of how things are going to feel. Thoughts? -gm -
Why the UTEP hate?
-
I don't think there's any question the coaches will look to MTSU when/if the LSU game is cancelled. And an extra week of MTSU preparation would do wonders for the worriers on the board. As for Mac and Southlake Carrol...I never knew of the connection. Did Mac actually coach there before he was at MTSU? How long has he been in Mufrees'? -gm

We're Gonna Turn "Death Valley" into
greenminer replied to Green Grenade II's topic in Mean Green Football
Considering a game hasn't been played, there's nothing to say why not. We've won a bowl game with a freshman that took his first snap in front of 70+ thousand fans. Just like Troy last year, we had a fantastic defense in '02, but after 4 consecutive bowl games, many can make a case that the recruits on the field today are more athletic than what we've had in the past. Who's to say they can't play better than 3 years ago? Considering our track record against OOC opponents, I'm not holding my breath on this one until we start getting wins again (OOC). But streaks are there to be broken, and how many LSU fans would go home cursing Miles' name if the Mean Green some how pull it off? We've got nothing to lose. Here's to an injury-free game -gm
