How did the players take this? I hope they're seeing that this decision was made with a bigger picture in mind, and not at all as an attack on their abilities on the field/in the classroom. I think it's wise for you to bite your tongue until the season is over. I'm very curious if you'll elaborate at season's end about any other quips in line with this, but I'll respect your silence if that's what you decide to stick with. Personally, I'm thankful for the effort the player's put forth on the field and how they have represented the Mean Green. -gm

Most educational day of College Football....EVER.

Oh man what a great post. I'll add my own reminisce to this: 1. The 2002 NMSU game. That game was so see-saw. Anyone ever remember seeing heads hanging everytime the Aggies took the lead? I sure as heck don't. 2. Booger. I know some of you might knock on me for living in the past. But I'm not dwelling on a guy who had talent and intangibles. I'm dwelling on a player that worked his a$$ off on every play, and shot a lightning bolt of energy across the field into the heart of every player wearing green. Boy I loved seeing that. How 'bout those celebrations that Kassel/Spencer displayed every time a play was made? 3. How much did those players who shared the field with Scott Hall (and Andrew Smith, for that matter. RIP) actually HATE losing? When those guys returned to practice following a loss, you can bet there was some blood shed and effort fueled by anger and focus. And those guys didn't just hate losing, they had fun and LOVED playing the game; appreciated every second of it. They weren't giving a rats behind what the media thought of them in the Sun Belt, or where they ranked among the D-1 ranks. I was there for the '01 win over MTSU that started that whole run, and I came to town a couple weeks ago to witness an ugly win over FIU that I thought for sure would turn the corner like the former. While that hasn't been the case, I'll keep watching. Waiting and hoping for that one moment where we turn to the upside...permanently. -gm

A few quick facts for exposition: Tom Zbikowski (Notre Dame safety) got paid to fight in a professional boxing match that lasted :49. And that, apparently, is OKAY with the NCAA. happy gridironing, my friend Rhett Bomar (OU quarterback before season) got paid for a job that he went to for :49, and that’s not OKAY. He -Bomar- ended up penalized on so many levels, he is no longer on the OU team. Anyone remember the Jeremy Bloom crap a few years ago through U of Colorado? wow... And now, the NCAA is threating USC with a forfeit of all their games/titles/awards that accumulated through Bush's stay, because he took money from a sports marketing firm. okay okay, it was reportedly $100K; but that's not my point...read on. Now here's the twist: The NCAA, more specifically, the PAC-10 has suspended the refs from the OU-UO game for blowing the end of that game this weekend (really, instant replay guys. How did they mess this up? where's the dignity?). Here's my question: If they are goign to strip USC of all those games (and Bush of his Heisman, mind you), calling for accountability, why are they not taking it themselves when Stoops, OU, and Co. have been denied their request to erase this past game from the record books? if NCAA is going to ask USC to be held accountable for mistakes it (the NCAA) failed to find at the time of occurance, isn't it only fair that they be held accountable for the OU-UO game and erase THAT game from the record books? This organization is so cloudy, it's a shame. Thoughts, please. -gm

UTEP Continues to invest in Athletics
greenminer replied to El Paso Eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Excellent point. How many commercials have we, El Pasoans, seen Price and Sadler in local commercials? It may not seem directly related, but everyone here knows who they are and they immediately seem more accessible and inviting by getting their faces out to the public regularly. That's a big deal when recruiting the fan. They take the "thankful to be here" cliche to a whole new level by making you believe they'll do anything for UTEP athletic's success. -
I didn't know De La Salle was such a "mystery". Also, didn't their winning streak come to an end last season? Maybe I'm wrong, but I couldn't find their schedule history on their site. -gm

UTEP Continues to invest in Athletics

My count is at 2 successful seasons . Then again, that includes 2 bowl losses. I agree: if anything, I would think it had more to do w/the recent resurgence of the bball program and the release of the movie than anything related with the football program. -gm -
Nowitzski no longer getting to the basket is what killed the Mavs. The biased calls killed the NBA fan in me.

Good read on what this Miami title is leading the NBA to.

Where are the Dallas Maverick Faithfull?
greenminer replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Dirk needs to take it to the hoop more and stop settling for those mid-rangers. There seems to be a huge difference in a Mav's possession when they get past half-court and start moving the ball. If Terry/point sits there at the top and waits too long for something to develop, we rely too much on low-% shots. Maybe I'm seeing this wrong. And Wayde was hitting his shots magnificantly, not gonna argue with a great performance. But the last three games, to me, there's been an obvious difference in the way they're callling Mav fouls on Wayde/Heat, and the physicallity they - the refs - are letting the Heat play on Terry/Mavs. -
I've got a poster with a Lombardi quote "What it takes to be No. 1". Part of it was one mentioned above. It's great. Here's the whole thing: Winning is not a sometime thing, it's an all-the-time thing. You don't win once in a while, you don't do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game and that is first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay and I don't ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in anything we do and to win and to win and to win. Every time a football player goes out to ply his trade he's got to play from the ground up--from the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That's O.K. You've got to be smart to be No. 1 in any business. But more important, you've got to play with your heart--with every fiber of your body. If you're lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he's never going to come off the field second. Running a football team is no different from running any other kind of organiztion--an army, a political party, a business. The principles are the same. The object is to win--to beat the other guy. Maybe that sounds hard or cruel. I don't think so. It's a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That's why they're there--to compete. They know the rules and the objectives when they get in the game. The objective is to win--fairly, squarely, decently, by the rules--but to win. And in truth, I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for, needs, discipline and the harsh reality of head-to-head combat. I don't say these things because I believe in the "brute" nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man's finest hour--his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear--is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle--victorious.

Famous Alumni? Cool Stats? Rankings?
greenminer replied to WIFE2HOT4U's topic in Mean Green Football
Just to play devil's advocate, the question was for famous alumn. That means they have to have actually graduated right? Norah Jones was here, but I heard she didn't finish. Not trying to steal their thunder, though. Don't hurt me -stv -

lol I share your optimism, but there's something faulty about your reasoning there. Jets have one of the most proven backs (although not too electrifying) in the league, while the Texans will have one of the most electrifying (although not proven). -gm
