Obama - You Da Man!
JayDub replied to DeepGreen's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Well, at least you admit it... Start calling McCain "John Sidney McCain, III"...and then it will make sense to call Obama "Barack Hussein Obama". -

OK, so his mom had him go by his step-father's last name. So did mine. Little known fact. My legal name is Justin Cook. The majority of people here know me by Justin Winters (hence JayDub). Winters is my stepdad's last name. The only reason I ever put down that I went by any alias is because I have been paid in the past with the name Justin Winters on the check...and there are employers who knew my situation and, though on tax records I was Justin Cook, they called me Justin Winters. As I have gotten older, I have accepted who my real father was and adopted his last name for good. However, I can see that situation As far as the Islam thing, if your school required you to list your religion...what would your parents put on the application? Probably whatever the family practices, right? What it comes down to is exactly what he says in speeches...he's a man with dark skin and a Muslim name that was given by his Muslim father who he had no real relationship with. If that scares you, then this country is worse off that I thought. -

It's not that you aren't discussing in an uneducated manner...but, it is needless to repeatedly refer to him as "Barack Hussein Obama" or "BHO" unless you are invoking the name Hussein in an attempt to link Barack Obama and Saddam Hussein in the minds of the simple-minded. If you're going to call him "Barack Hussein Obama", then why don't you call John McCain, "John Sidney McCain, III"? Saddam Hussein tarnished the name "Hussein" a bit...but, would you rather Obama had changed it prior to entering the race and give the impression that he was hiding something? He can't just go back and force his father to give him a different name. A little info on the name Hussein (from Salon.com): Excerpt from the Salon.com article entitled "Obama should be proud to be named Hussein" -

While I normally would at least agree with the second part of your statement...I'm just not sure they could manipulate the instant times given off of those touchboards. -

Sadly, Rick, you're probably not too far off the mark at all. And, there is no way some of those Chinese girls were over the age of 12...let alone 16. I think, when it is all said and done, we will find that the Chinese bent and stretched every rule possible to dominate these games. The U.S. women may have had a bit of a meltdown towards the end there...but, hey, Alicia Sacramone is still a wicked hottie (if you're into the sort of chick that could kick your ass). And, holy hell...the swimming relay that shaved 5 seconds off the world record? That was just...wow. -
OK, kids...my computer geek skillz have fallen off almost completely over the last few years. It's sad, but I just haven't really kept up...so, here's my question. I believe the music player on the linked site below is flash based. Is there any way to extract the audio file from it? This song is one of my favorite of all time...and I want to add this particular version onto my iPod. I can't find the KCRW podcast anymore...otherwise I would just edit it off of there into a file with the single song. All in all, geeks...what is the verdict? Oil Continues Free-fall
JayDub replied to UNTflyer's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I'm a firm believer that some of this ridiculousness was a numbing tactic pushed along by oil speculators. I think the logic was "if we can drive the prices to an average of about $4 a gallon, then $3.25 starts to sound like a bargain". More long-term profit for all. As much as I would love to blame the Bush Administration entirely for the price of crude...I just can't put it all on them. Congress over the last 20 years has loosened the rules on speculation to the detriment of the country...allowing the rich to get richer at the expense of the average, everyday American. Rampant speculation coupled with some of the mess this administration has gotten us into is what is killing this country, economically. Do something about it... -
Greetings From Sydney!

So far, a great trip...it has rained off and on today, so I decided to do the aquarium and maybe another museum later instead of the bridge climb. If it clears, I may go to Bondi Beach, too. Not that it has helped me either...something tells me fat, ugly Americans aren't what they are after...I guess I'll have to resort to pretending I have money. Typical corporate guys...hauling too much ass and not paying any damn attention in the lower altitudes. Everyone wants to talk about airline pilots and their "being pressured to take less fuel" (which is B.S., by the way)...but no one wants to talk about the "get-there-itis" that many corporate aviation customers (a.k.a. - rich bastards) hammer down on their pilots. The trip over was my first on a 747 (in business class...not too shabby for 14 hrs. Hoping for first on the way back.)...first plane I saw when we landed at SYD was a spankin' new Singapore Airlines A380. It made my airplane geek pants go crazy. -

Documentary Question
JayDub replied to GoMeanGreen1999's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I have watched Be Here To Love Me, about the life and craziness of songwriter Townes Van Zandt, two or three times over the course of the last couple of weeks. The guy is just amazing to me. Even if you're not a Townes fan, it is a very interesting watch to see the fall into and attempts to rise from madness of such a prolific songwriter. -
I came here for the discussion of the threat of bear attacks...and I am somewhat disappointed. I think they're both a couple of idiots. So, what does that say about average American who voted them in? So many factors...the 24-hour news cycle, the internet, the information age in general...have dumbed us down to the point that so very few of us think for ourselves. We allow our political party affiliation, our church/mosque/synagouge/etc. (not our actual beliefs, but the collective interpretation of a religion by the leadership of individual places of worship), or whatever our favorite news source may be...make the choices for us instead of thinking for ourselves. Every day, this country starts to look more and more like the movie "Idiocracy"...and that scares the living hell out of me. The moment we quit thinking for ourselves and aligned ourselves with a sole political party or a sole religious ideolgy and completely closed off our minds to anything that might contradict a simplistic, single line of thinking...was the moment we doomed our country to be no different than the "terrorist states" that use those same tactics to convince their citizens to hate us.

Interesting theory...I remember thinking to myself that he was too familiar of a face to play such a small role...though Fichtner does play bit parts oh, so well... -

My only issue with the Harvey Dent/Two-Face storyline is that it felt like there was alot that was left on the cutting room floor for the sake of shortening the movie. I would love to see Nolan's Director's Cut of both films. That said, I thought Eckhart was pretty good. He was no Ledger's Joker, but he did what he was there to do. I think they left it open for Two-Face to be the villian again...they never said Two-Face was dead, just Harvey Dent. If Nolan is going to continue to focus on Batman's beginnings, continuation of the Two-Face storyline could be doable. As long as he stays away from Robin...Batgirl...and Bat-Nipples...he can do no wrong in my eyes. -
The bigger question is "Why do we allow it to continue?".
