Use the Offense to help the Defense
akriesman replied to El Paso Eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Teams run hurry up because it doesn't allow the defense to get set. And, it actually wears them down faster because they don't really have a chance to catch their breath. But yeah, it can also wear down your defense if you have a quick 3 and out. SMU is more athletic. So, the team probably ran more hurray up to try and gain an edge. You probably already knew that. But, just in case..... I believe that when you need a score and have your opponent on their heels, you run a quick snap. If you have a big lead and the D is obviously gassed, you can slow it down. I am pretty sure we ran a lot of hurray up last season also. But, not 100% sure. The fact is, we can run the ball, dominate and wear down weaker opponents. That doesn't work so well against bigger, tougher, more talented opponents. When a G5 school upsets a favored P5 school, it is usually because they were able to pass the ball extremely well. Very, very rarely does a school from a smaller division run well against a higher division foe. When NT should have upset Texas in 1988, I think our QB Scott Davis threw for over 400 yards. I don't remember us being able to run at all in that game -
Yep. 95.3 has terrible reception in most of Dallas. Where do most UNT alums probably reside ? Dallas. This is a terrible oversight. In fact, it is shocking.

And by then, it was pretty much over. That's just awful. You must have been furious.

That's the thing. They can whip up on the bad defensive teams because of the running game. Our OL and backs wear them down, control the clock and keep our defense off the field. The passing game makes just enough plays (usually short to medium passes). This is all good when the opponent is weaker/smaller. But, when a team is talented and big enough on defense to shut down our running game, it's game over. Our passing attack has not been good enough to keep up when the defense gets burned for 4 or more TD's. So yeah, they will probably still pull off about 6 wins. Then, a better bowl opponent will shut down the running game and the same old story is repeated. We know what we have in AA and it is enough to win 6 games. The question is whether GG and the coaching staff can execute bigger and more consistent plays in the passing game to get us over the hump.

So are we pulling for nUTSAck or UofH?

I am sick of reading all the AAC folks saying that UTSA is going to fit in nicely with them. No such mention of North Texas ever. UTSA basketball ? Not so much. And, the football team had 1 great season, which was last year. People are really overrating UTSA. They may be on a roll now. But, it could all collapse any day. -
Monday Mailbag: Reed Smith Article from 247Sports
akriesman replied to UNTLifer's topic in Mean Green Football
The article mentions attacking the secondary. If we get in a shooting match with SMU, we will lose and probably badly. SMU has more WR talent (on paper) and a premium college QB. It is critical that we can establish the run, wear down their D and control the clock. I would like to see nearly the same offensive game plan as last week. If the SMU defense is gassed in the 2nd half, we have a really good chance. If not, it will be hard for our guys to keep up...JMHO -
Could Seth Littrell be our Luke Skywalker?

Getting Phil Bennett to coach here may end up saving his career. What concerns me is that Bennett only signed a two-year contract. -

Hardison has a gun for an arm. But, he is pretty wild also. And, UTEP's clock management is terrible. -

Phil Bennett is a hell of a DC. It has been a lot time since we have had a DC that has been able to make adjustments like he has this year and last. -

I do think that UTEP has a pretty good defense. They have a big crowd behind them at home also.
