Same exact year for me. I remember listening to the Nevada-Reno OT game on the radio. So close. If I am not mistaken. That was the last year of football for UT Arlington. We crushed them at Fouts.

I may or may not have already placed a bet ;) All I can say is that I feel pretty comfortable about what I did.

Official Rice Game Score Prediction Thread
akriesman replied to MeanGreenTexan's topic in Mean Green Football
Rice out-gained Texas by almost 200 yards. Our "fast paced" offense will just give them more chances to score. This is going to be a case where our offense causes the defense to look worse than it is. Rice 48 UNT 20 (late garbage points) -
"3) Will there be an open audition at QB this week?" I like this one. It is a fair question without singling out any individuals.

Mac says that the '15 class of recruits may be his best. That may very well be true. But, you cannot win at the FBS level without an FBS caliber QB. Mac has done great things to rally the students into supporting their school. And, he seems to put a disciplined team on the field every week. Our talent level does not seem to be poor overall. However, it all comes down the the QB. When it comes to the most important position on the roster, Mac unfortunately gets an F. There seems to be tons of QB talent at the FCS level, yet we can't get one of them at NT ? Surprisingly, I thought recruiting decent QB's was one of the few things that TD did well. This is soooooo frustrating.

One of my sons is a freshman at NT this year. Unfortunately, he is not the biggest FB fan, despite my repeated attempts over the years to convert him. Over the summer Mac left a big impression on him during freshman orientation. He calls coach Mac the "intense guy with sunglasses". My son said that he understands the importance of attending the FB games because of coach Mac's speech during what he called the "brainwashing session". LOL.

Coastal Carolina to the Sunbelt Conference
akriesman replied to Coach Bill Lewis's topic in Mean Green Football
I believe that moves like this will continue to hurt all G5 schools, not just the Sun Belt. The larger D1 gets overall, the more likely we will be looking at a clean split of D1 at some point IMO. Get ready for the super-conference breakaway. I really feel for our friends at Ark St and LaLa. They deserve much better. -

4-8 We are better than last year. But, schedule is much tougher. -
Somebody sent me this twitter link. I didn't know who Nick Bakay was or why he was laughing about this. Then, I saw he was an SMU Grad :) In case the tweet disappears. Somebody gave him a UNT mug. He says "A friend just gave me a University of North Texas mug. Still laughing "

Swedish Student Earns Football Scholarship To UNT
akriesman replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
He seems like a really fine young man: focused and humble. I remember reading that he was a 5 star recruit and the 2nd ranked dual-threat QB in the nation (class of 2015) when he moved to Denton. With those credentials, I wonder why he gave up on his dream at QB ? I would not think a foot injury would kill that potential. In the end, it is probably harder to make it in the NFL as a QB. So, he probably made the right choice in changing positions IMO. This young man is the kind of player that you want to really root for. I am thrilled that we have him. -
Football's Value to a University
akriesman replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
True conversation I had with my 15 year old son last weekend: Son: I think that I want to major in Engineering. Me: Well, you have some pretty good schools in the area. UTA is pretty good and ranked in the top 100.. Son: But, UTA is not a real college. Me: Why would you say that. Son: Because I never hear about them. Their football team must be bad. Me: What about North Texas ? Is it a real college ? Son: Yes, one of my friends wears a North Texas sweatshirt. Perception is everything. -
Football's Value to a University
akriesman replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
This comment by one of the message posters ruffles my Eagle feathers. Never say Never. "There is the opposite of the Flutie Effect. Houston is seen as a loser school due to losing to NC State. Memphis is seen as a loser school due to having its NCAA final four appearance taken away due to cheating. Schools like North Texas, San Jose State, Troy will never have lighting strike but will always been seen as losers. The schools that drop sports to focus on academics will be the first schools to appeal to the cord cutting future." -
Nice strong finish for us after things were looking pretty bleak a month ago. Congrats to the staff and coaches.

That is how I feel. There are far too many variables at the QB position. If we don't improve at QB, it is going to be another long season. I do feel better about the late recruiting push.

Texas is No Longer the Nation's Most Valuable Program
akriesman replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
That list has produced some really strange results. At #82, we are slightly ahead of everyone else in CUSA (not a good sign for the conference). Plus, East Carolina is at #86, which seems far lower than I would have thought considering their attendance (50k average). I would think that attendance and revenue would be very closely tied. -
A look back at the key contributors from UNT’s 2014 signing class
akriesman replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I seem to remember Dickey doing this prior to his 4th or 5th season. And, he was even public about it on a radio interview that I remember hearing. The end result was about 3 good seasons and then the bottom fell out of the program for many years. I am NOT a fan of stacking your team for one or two breakout seasons (breakout by UNT standards). Plain and simple, we are underperforming when it comes to recruiting for a school of our size and facilities. We may not consistently belong in the top half of FBS. But, we don't belong in the bottom 10 or 20 schools either, which is where we are consistently ranked when it comes to recruiting. There is somebody out their that will look at our enrollment, facilities, potential and decide that they can sell this program instead of talking about the difficulties. I really believe that even without my green glasses on. -
Saw this on CNN this morning. I had not seen it mentioned here. Pretty cool story. It just goes to show that having a football program does more than just generate instant revenue. It also creates future opportunity. http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/105755/a-5-year-olds-letter-and-1-donation-to-help-save-uab-football-touches-those-at-school

JUCO QB Demarcus Smith Verbals
akriesman replied to FirefightnRick's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
also "Smith was rated as one of the top quarterback and athlete prospects in the country coming out of Seneca High School following the 2010 season. As a senior, he threw for 3,150 yards along with 30 touchdowns compared to nine interceptions. Smith was named to the All-State First-Team by the Louisville Courier-Journal after his final campaign and was also awarded a spot on the 2010 Class of Commonwealth team. He was listed as the No. 2 overall recruit in Kentucky, the No.11 dual-threat quarterback in the country and a four-star recruit by Rivals.com. ESPN.com and Scout.com both listed Smith as a three-star prospect with Scout ranking him as the No.20 quarterback in the country. In three seasons as Seneca's signal caller, Smith threw for nearly 8,000 yards and 75 touchdowns. Smith tossed for 3,227 yards and 32 touchdowns as a sophomore while adding 457 yards rushing. He was a participant in the ESPN RISE Elite 11 Camp before his senior season, a prestigious invitation-only camp for the nation's best quarterback prospects." -
JUCO QB Demarcus Smith Verbals
akriesman replied to FirefightnRick's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
This DaMarcus Smith ? Hearing former UofL commit, WKU QB Damarcus Smith (Seneca) drawing major IU interest. Smith has thrown for 2746 yards, 31 TDs at Butler CC. If so, i's a risk. I quote another forum post "A couple of red flags. Non qualifier at UCF". Still, we are pretty desparate. -
Most sports forums are filled with game discussions, etc. Here at UNT, all we have lately is to discuss players no longer playing with the team (Norris, Wesley, Hardwick and C Jones) or players that are currently unable to play (Reese). How sad is that. Our luck has to turn sometime.
