Fouts Field Implosion Is? And How Many Seats On...
UNT86 replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
From what I understand, Fouts will remain a while longer. It will remain as a track facility until a new one can be built across the highway (probably near the new tennis courts). However, I don't think a track facility is in the budget in the near future. I'm also not sure, but I would suspect that the Green/White game will be in Fouts again this year. So, you may not have seen the last football at Fouts, just the last opponent. -
Mine came in today. HIGHLY recommend it. Thanks for the post

Upon further review, I agree. I removed my post. Sorry NT fans.

It has been a while since I went to Monroe, but last I knew, theirs was terrible.

We went to Jonesboro last year and saw us play Arkansas State. I think new stadium will be similar to theirs. We sat in the second level of the home side and could see much better than Section E at Fouts. Theirs didn't have anything under the rakers as ours will. All conscessions were stand alone structures such as we have at Fouts (although much newer)and made a plaza area behind the stands. The teams entered the stadium similar to the way we will enter ours and it was pretty cool. In the second half, we went to the visitors side and walked right down behind the NT players. Very intimate. If you are going to sit there, don't bring small children. I think ours will be similar in the respect that the visitors will not be able to get NT fans out of their sideline conversations. It should be great.

To me, the biggest difference is the type of offense each coach ran. We have always had trouble recruiting quality skill kids, especially quarterbacks. The offense Coach Dickey ran was 2 tight ends (sometimes 3), and 2 backs. The QB didn't have to do much, just don't lose the game. We usually had one good WR and would get lots of single coverage and would take an occasional shot downfield. Third and long was a draw and a punt. I know everyone remembers "Throw the ball, Dickey" from the stands. But, we were not 117th in the nation in turnovers. Coach Dodge has completely turned over the roster. He has gone the way of the one back/spread despite our traditional lack of ability to recruit those kinds of players. I think we finally have a QB to run the offense, although he is just a sophomore. But, when you run a spread offense, you are going to expose your defense to more opportunities from our opponents. I'll bet our defense is on the field for at least 25-30 plays more every game under Dodge than they were under Dickey. But, hey, at least we throw the ball on third down...right? Coach Dickey was boring, but he won. Coach Dodge is more mainstreem, but can he win at NT doing so. He finally has his recruits in place (he was at a severe disadvantage the first year), so we should see a big step in the right direction. My hope is that he can get it done. I have become a fan of his over the last few years. I have no doubt that he took the job thinking that he could win and move on. Thas is fine with me, because the first part in that is WIN.

Two for us in the green section. I'll just drive my truck 5 more years. I never thought I would see a new stadium. No way we were going to pass this up. By the way, I'm VERY fortunate, my wife was all for it!

True Or False ? Unt Working On 2-1 With Oklahoma

I agree with you KRAM1. Anything outside of Denton is a road game. -
True Or False ? Unt Working On 2-1 With Oklahoma
UNT86 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
If OU wants to play us at the new stadium, then I'm all for it. Everyone wonders why the city of Denton doesn't get behind UNT. Perhaps it is because every time we have a "big" home game, we run to Dallas. When I drove through Denton last week, I saw NT banners near the downtown square. It was very refreshing and I think it is due to a dedication to play home games in Denton. For me, it is the new Fouts, or forget it. -
No. Not interested in Utah St, SW Tex, or UTSA.

Nice write-up. It will be nice to play Clemson, but the REAL season starts the next week. The JUCO corner (McCord) looks like he will be a real player. I was impressed by him in the Spring game. My biggest concern about our defense is athleticism by our linebackers in the open field. I just didn't see them make enough plays and pursuit will have to be major emphasis for our defense. If we leave them one on one, our defense will continue to give up points. The place I think you will see the biggest improvement is in our coverage teams. I look for our kickoff and punt coverage teams to be much improved. The heavy recruiting of JUCO defensive kids and the number of redshirts on defense from a year ago should really help our special teams. Like the article says, I think our O-line will be one of the best in the conference. Coach Leftwich did an outstanding job when he was here before, and has revamped a line that was getting pushed around when he came back. Last year, I started to see the LOS going in the correct direction. Also, the inclusion of a TE (something Dodge has added to the offense since his Carroll days) really helped. How long till Rice comes to town???

At least this post got right to the negative. No use waiting on someone else to be gloomy. Right? Just get right to it. If you want a post to become negative, just do it yourself.
-
Wow, 3 posts again before we have to read something negative about the Mean Green.
-
It took 10 posts for this one to turn negative. Come on, can't we bash our program faster than that?
-
And it only took 3 posts for something negative. Congrats '90'

I hope Tech tells the litttle James to "beat it" as well. Honor his scholorship if he wants to stay at Tech, but there is no way he can continue to be a member of that team. If I were the new coach, that is what I would do. Love ya James, but I'll love ya more somewhere else. Good luck and see ya... and take your $MU Jerk dad with you. One Wierdo + One Jerk = Disaster.. if given enough time.
-
Maybe the comparison didn't make sense to you. My point is that if the kids don't believe in what the coach is telling them, then you have to change. Our kids still believe in Dodge. The ones at $MU did not believe in their coach, and thus the change. But the fact remains that they were close when the kids were young, the kids stayed together, and Jones is reaping the benefit now. I think we will do the same in another year. I am also aware that you could not answer any of the other questions.

"You know as well as I do that even if a fan DOES have a genius idea, no coach would be willing to listen to it. " Like what? What exactly is the "genius" idea? I hear lots of lip on this site, but no specifics. "Maybe the position coaches wouldn't gain any sort of insight about SMU's turnaround, but our HC and AD just might." Again, what kind of insight? And remember, a couple of years ago, $MU was losing a lot of close games. They believe in Jones the same way our kids believe in Dodge. Just give it one more season. I think you will be glad you did.

I don't think I'm the only one tired of signing on and reading this kind of comment. Coach DeLoach was the DC for our bowl teams, Mike Nelson has coached in 8 bowl games, Gahagan 3 Heisman Trophy winners, Ford's teams average 385 yards per game, Leftwich was here for 4 straight bowls (and they didn't exactly suck while he was at Tulsa), Peterson spent 17 years at Air Force, Conley has multiple bowls while at UT...so exactly which coaches should "tune in"? What should they be looking for? Is there a scheme our staff is missing? Maybe a route combination? Maybe a zone blitz of some kind? Perhaps a kickoff formation that is diferent from ours? Be specific. Maybe give one of our coaches a call....I'm sure they would be interested in any insight you can offer. Like I said, I'm just tired of all the negative posts.
-
So, what would you have done? What was the "smart" move?
-
I am so tired of reading this kind of stuff. What would you have Dodge do, forfiet. So, according to you, Dodge should tell the rest of his team "I'm sorry, but we will have to forfiet the remainder of the ballgame. Our starting QB and his backup are both out for the rest of the game. Defense, I know you just got a big stop. I know you are still playing hard at the end of a long season. I know you have battled back into a game you were waaay behind in. Sorry guys, but we really should just surrender." Instead, he is forced to burn a redshirt. The kid takes the team down the field, we score, and we are attempting an onside kick with a chance to win. If you had been there, and seen they way those kids fought back...well, since I'm pretty sure you were not there... and since you don't have to consider that on the pee wee team you coach...how about you just give it a break.
-
Dude, do you ever have anything positive to post? How about we give the negative posts a rest for a while? If we don't win next year, you can be an "I told you so". If we do, you can be happy with the rest of us.

I have coached against Skyline in the playoffs for the last 3 years. Hall is an outstanding QB, but let me tell you, he is no Riley Dodge. In fact, he did not even start at Skyline until this year. For the previous two seasons, he was the backup and came in only when Skyline wanted to throw. He is athletic, but Skyline made almost no attempt to run the ball with him. As you may have noticed, we used Riley in the running game with a lot of success. And to say that Hall led Skyline "from the ashes" is false. They went at least 4 rounds deep in the playoffs in Hall's two years as the backup. Skyline is a magnet school and gets to legally recruit from the entire DISD. They have much more talent and an enrollment that is double that of most of their opponents. They had two sign with Minnesota last year, and one of their WR is a commitment to Kansas State this year. I'm ready for everyone to get off Riley. The only reason we were close this year was because Riley is a stud. Anyone remember Mitch Maher? He went through growing pains too. Let him grow. You will be VERY glad you did. That being said, I would be glad to watch Hall in a green uniform when Riley graduates.

I once thought that when we started winning, the attendance would come. But, we won 4 conference championships in a row, and couldn't put 20,000 in Fouts for any of those seasons. Some talk of getting into a different conference, but who would want a school that can't fill 2/3 of their own stadium in their best years? Some say that we need to get bigger name opponents to come into Denton. But, why would they come when we don't even support our own team? I think our attendance has cost us a bowl game in the 70's (and the main reason Hayden Fry left), and cost us a couple of shots at a National title when we couldn't get a home playoff game in I-AA. How about we get on board and show up (and I have been since 1974, so I have seen a lot of NT football). Maybe, we could do our part and at least get 20,000 for a couple of seasons? I hope the stadium will help, but I have my doubts it will.
